As both a musician and a singer, i know how hard it is to do both at the same time, and the complexity of her instrument, is beyond words...i respect her so much for being able to do both effortlesly as well as understanding how to compose music. She's amazing, no if's ands or buts about it.
Never in my life have I ever fallen for someone so hard and so fast...in 30 minutes, after 5 videos on RUclips, since I first stumbled and saw her on PBS tonight. She is literally the Love of my Musical Life.
@singersdream1999 The thing is, Esperanza doesn't use autotune. And she plays an incredibly difficult instrument with astonishing virtuosity as she sings songs written better than Bieber could ever hope to compose. Also, she's an artist, not a pop singer.
Dude I know exactly what you mean. I'm not exactly a Chick Korea fan but I acknowledge and appreciate his music and realize his contributions to music as a whole and rethink why he is where he is...and that's because of his talent. And the same goes for Esperanza. I play bass but I'm along the lines of Jaco, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke, etc. But listening and watching her makes me appreciate the hard work she does into making and playing her music. She's awesome and blessed!!!
her intonation is perfect......a quote from my dad who's been playing over 50 years. her violin experience shows through by her hand placement.....awesome
Get it, gurl!!! You *DESERVED* your Grammy because you are talented. Your songs aren't teeny-bopper b.s or rump shaking songs. I am TOO happy you won!!!
I'd never heard about Esperanza Spalding before the Grammys, but I love the fact that she won. It's comforting to know that not ALL hope is lost for the greed-corrupt music industry, that it's not always a popularity contest, and that the Grammys still have some integrity. Congratz Esperanza, you obviously deserve it.
This is the kind of talent that comes along so rarely that it just fills me with joy to see. It is amazingly hard to sing and play acoustic bass simultaneously. It's just beyond description the amount of concentration and discipline involved--and sheer musicality. She's so gifted and well-trained and has had to work harder than I can even fathom. Major chops! I'm in awe!
Wow, such great intervals and she's right on pitch, very talented! Such a rare thing for there to be truly original music coming from a young person these days, and a huge plus that it's jazz! BRAVO!
So good. Love that she lights up and radiates such incredible joy and passion. I personally enjoyed the guitar work, in both tone and style. It offered a contrast and feel indicative of the lyrical content and made it a bit more contemporary.
No auto-tune, no gimmicks, no fireworks, no choreography. Just straight up artistry and musicianship. A breath of fresh air in the sticky and repetitive world of corporate bubblegum.
In my best opinion I think anyone who likes Esperanza's Music is a real music lover. Whether you like R&B, HipHop, Jazz, Classical, Country or Rock you can identify good music when you hear it!
I just saw her live this past sunday in my hometown of Schenectady, NY. She was phenomenal. Let me tell you, she was even better in the performance I saw than in this video. Ella Fitzgerald would have had to watch her back if those two ever were to scat it out. What a talent.
I love this woman!! Read the comments, and then tell me that jazz is a bunch of noise ... its a burst of auditory abstractions like the explosions in a Kandisnky painting. Truely amazing!!
saw her with bitter apple at cachaca in manhattan. One of the most beautiful , most talented players I have seen in a while. Her approach to the bass is uncanny. Especially when she is free jamming.. ahhhhh her improv... her essence. I cant take it. She has to be the most perfect girl out there.
i can't help but imagine what it would be like to wake up next to this woman, make breakfast, discuss her planned musical work for the day, then come home & hear the results over dinner & a glass of wine. i'll leave the rest of the night to the reader's discretion haha. whoever hooks this woman's heart is one lucky man & whoever she is singing about is a fool in the extreme!
@kiikat yes.. your absolutely right..even here at manila... we don't know spalding besides a brand of ball....everyone here is Beiver fans....now i know better more.... yes, she really deserve the recognition of GRAMMY b4 the BABY ARTIST...awesome talent one out of millions...
I don't quite understand the people complaining that the guitar doesn't fit into the jazz setting. That's a pretty typical fusion tone. It sounds alright, I think.
@ActionAimz Hey Amy! OK, so reaching through pages worth of hundreds more sentiments after so much time's a bit different but that's cool. Thanks for sharing my musical taste harmlessly. I do believe, however, that anyone with the (soul) ears to receive her talent will agree that "[WE] already know!" :) P(e)ace to all.
Fantastic. For people mad about "best new artist" it's not actually "most popular new artist." it's referring to the artist with the most talent... which it's pretty obvious is her
@pwrgawd I was SO EXCITED that someone was finally going to answer my question--which I thought was legitimate--but I guess I have to keep waiting. I'll be nice and answer YOUR question, though: No, there was no sarcasm in my original post. I haven't really listened to enough jazz to make a statement like that, but this one isn't really my thing. Maybe I need more pop elements in my music...this seems to be all over the place, like a jam session or something. If that's jazz, I'll pass. Fair?
my favorite song too. I cant get enough of it. I paid 65 dollars for her cd. Radio Membership drive, for her, they can have the 65 dollars....it pays for itself....hopefully we get a serious trend of music, good music not marked "explicit lyrics"
i think the reason you might be underwhelmed with her bass playing on these videos is because you're seeing her showcase her singing and playing. i just saw her at yoshis w/ mccoy tyner, great acoustics, i had no idea she sang and her chops were totally up to par. in fact, i think she held the show up. as for tone, it's a warm sound on these songs but with mccoy i think she was channeling jimmy garrison. she's obviously good enough to change her style based on the gig.
@goldgretch HAHAHA man o man i hear ya ! this woman is exactly what the world needs she is just full of life and musical prowess so genuine! she just makes sweet sweet love to that bass i love the way she jams with her soul!
@JazzyBelle30 I agree. Its not often you hear pure music. No machines, etc. I was shocked, like the rest of the world. But I might support her, its good music!
This is the first chart I heard from her. It was last summer on our local college radio. They were featuring that were supposed to play at the Cliff Brown festival here in DE. I really dug the tune and looked forward to seeing her perform. She got to me. But I don't think she ever played there. I was disseminated. Nevertheless I got to meet Chick Corea cause my Homey had back stage passes. What a great festival. Hope that she'll be there for 2011 Clifford Brown Fest.
She is awesome and very advanced in terms of music some people won't ever understand.
To sing while playing the Bass...and she is also dancing. Musical talent to the bone. Exceptional.
As both a musician and a singer, i know how hard it is to do both at the same time, and the complexity of her instrument, is beyond words...i respect her so much for being able to do both effortlesly as well as understanding how to compose music. She's amazing, no if's ands or buts about it.
I will be forever grateful to my mother for introducing me to Esperanza Spalding's music. Thanks mom :).
Great stage presence, lovely voice!
omg, i love her hair
Never in my life have I ever fallen for someone so hard and so fast...in 30 minutes, after 5 videos on RUclips, since I first stumbled and saw her on PBS tonight. She is literally the Love of my Musical Life.
That was beautiful!
@singersdream1999 The thing is, Esperanza doesn't use autotune. And she plays an incredibly difficult instrument with astonishing virtuosity as she sings songs written better than Bieber could ever hope to compose.
Also, she's an artist, not a pop singer.
If you are not listening to this type of music..you are missing out of something GREAT!!!...love love
incredible talent!! I adore her music, pure art!
This song never fails to get stuck in my head.
This is nice fresh air .We need this right now .

A good friend who I lived with in school put her album on and I was hooked. That was 5 years ago. She still crushes it.
her intonation is perfect......a quote from my dad who's been playing over 50 years. her violin experience shows through by her hand placement.....awesome
Get it, gurl!!! You *DESERVED* your Grammy because you are talented. Your songs aren't teeny-bopper b.s or rump shaking songs. I am TOO happy you won!!!
What a bright, young, beautiful talented musician. Hopefully she comes to Dallas soon.
I'd never heard about Esperanza Spalding before the Grammys, but I love the fact that she won.

So good. Love that she lights up and radiates such incredible joy and passion. I personally enjoyed the guitar work, in both tone and style. It offered a contrast and feel indicative of the lyrical content and made it a bit more contemporary.

I agree with jeffevers! This is real talent and musicality right here! She is under rated yet untouched in her genre!!
Real Music .... finally. I was hoping it would come back ....!
i love jazz!!!!
excelent singer and a great musician!!!
No auto-tune, no gimmicks, no fireworks, no choreography. Just straight up artistry and musicianship. A breath of fresh air in the sticky and repetitive world of corporate bubblegum.

I am in love. Esperanza, you are a bass playin' angel!
My ears, eyes and lips (say her name its nice) love her! Thanks Esperanza!

I don't quite understand the people complaining that the guitar doesn't fit into the jazz setting. That's a pretty typical fusion tone. It sounds alright, I think.

@JazzyBelle30 I agree. Its not often you hear pure music. No machines, etc. I was shocked, like the rest of the world. But I might support her, its good music!
i don't know how she plays that bass and sings such complicated vocals at the same time!!!
She's adorable, in various ways.
She really tells stories with her music
Real talent.

@goldmankwezi I highly suggest you see her live if you haven't already. She has a wonderful voice and so down to earth.
Yeah, she need to be my wife. Amazing voice and its real not studio post-production. Real talent like this is hard to find nowadays.
