  • Just shy of 2000 years ago the Roman Empire started it's conquest of the British Isles. For 400 years after, the majority of the country would remain under their rule. Despite being on the most northern frontiers of the empire, the Romans built great cities and fortifications in the country.
At one point, the fourth largest city was Viroconium Cornoviorum, or what is now known as Wroxeter in Shrewsbury. A little corner of the city now covers the village of the same name. While most of the city is lost to time. The remains of the bath house still stand and can be visited.
The site is managed by Enlgish Heritage and can be easily visited just outside of Shrewsbury. The site does have a shop and bathrooms but no cafe (although drinks are available in the shop). Parking is ample. The site itself is ok for most mobility types, although the paths are rough and there are some steps.
