  • Dr Magnifico discusses the dilemma Mounds faced when he blocked three times in a month and his dad ran out of money to continue treating him. Here are my tips for getting your cat out alive when you are financially constrained and you cannot afford the quote from the ER, or your vet. This is a life threatening condition and it should always be considered an emergency. But it doesn’t have to end in economic euthanasia. Ask for help for free at Pawbly.com.

I understand its a business, but vet care should not be as expensive as it is. A lot of us rescued, took cats out of a bad position as I did, tried to give them a better life but then can't always help them becuz its so unaffordable for a lot of people. Its sad.

What shouldn’t be so expensive is schooling to become a veterinarian. Most clinics are people who went to school and started their own business and now working their way out of debt. It’s understandable to want to help a pet, majority of people do. But if they do it once, that same person and whoever they tell is going to keep coming back and wanting more discounted or even free services. And that does not benefit a business to keep its doors open.

My cat is just about to die from blockage. It was $2300 to do it the first time. I have been giving him the food that was recommended. He has been drinking much more water. But for some reason he’s blocked again. Friends say it’s because he’s depressed or maybe it’s the litter. But I can’t pay that much again. Pains me to see him so uncomfortable

That's my story. I had to take my cat, a rescue, to the emergency vet because he had bladder crystals. they wouldn't let him in the door until i dropped at least 1k. Due to his treatment, medication and the nights he stayed at the hospital, i wound up spending 5,000. I get that it was an emergency vet and i should have chosen a better primary, but i can't help but feel kinda sour about everything. Nothing matters more than my cats health of course, but still...

I mean, veterinary school isn’t cheap and does have to be paid back sooo. I’m not saying it doesn’t suck, but there should be insurance options for animals. That’s not the veterinarians fault. And credit cards can come in handy for emergencies like this. If you have an animal, you know these things could arise and should have a back up payment for them, otherwise having them without being able to afford or have something to pay off(LIKE A CREDIT CARD) for basics or even emergencies is just ignorant.

I don’t need to do anything, I WORK in a veterinary office, I think that’s sufficient enough, but good shot 👍🏼 Cost depends where you go/live. The vet I work at, no SURGERY exceeds $350. Office visits are $30, wellness visits are $18. We are literally the cheapest vet in town with the most experienced veterinarian in the town. So it’s not like people are getting garbage work for the cheap cost either. Maybe the only one needing to do some research is yourself.

I took my cat who was having trouble breething to the ER animal hospital in the middle of the night because he was in distress trying hard to breath. They examined my cat. He had pneumonia. My estimate for his 24 hour treatment would be $2,000. They wanted almost the full amount paid upfront before my cat would receive treatment from them.
Insane! They said his prognosis was good if he was treated, or I could have him euthanized. I was devastated and my cat was suffering, and so I paid them the money so they would care for him and treat him. Dealing with the ER animal hospital was the worst experience I've had in getting pet care for him. Trying to make the right decision was extremely stressful when it involved thousands on dollars. I felt they cared more about the money than they cared about my poor pet. I am not rich, just a middle class citizen who can't afford such extravagant prices for veterinary care.
I truly think ER animal hospitals take advantage of pet parents during a very emotional time when their pet is sick and suffering. They know their regular vet office is closed and have no other choice but to pay those high prices so their beloved pet will receive the care they need to save their lives. It's outrageous!

My little boy Milkshake was a resilient little guy. He was always friendly, he’d seak out attention, and he loved everyone. He showed so much strength even when he was in pain. We still aren’t sure how long he could have been blocked. There just weren’t any signs until it was too late. Shake would like to come use the restroom with me when I’d get home from work. He’d follow me around the house. He’d sleep near the window so he could sunbathe. I fed him Wednesday morning before work. That night my sister called me to say he seem sick, so I decided I’d check in him and take him to the vet the next day. The next day Thursday I got home and spent time with him. In those 6 hours he was having trouble using the rest room and he wants eating or drinking. I rushed him to the hospital as soon as I noticed. He was so weak I cried the entire ride to the ER. The team that helped us was amazing they jumped into action immediately and unblocked him. They explained all the concerns and statistics. They explained how common this happens and all of the possible causes. They gave him a fighting chance. The first 24 hours was definitely tough. I went to visit him every 8 hours. He had his favorite blanket with him. I’d sit there for an hour each time. I’d whisper to him about all the things we could do when we got home. The next morning we received somewhat good news from the hospital. They said his numbers were slowly dropping and that they weren’t giving up on him. But they also mentioned his potassium wasn’t moving and that it could mean kidney failure. 8 hours later I went to see my beautiful little boy shakes and he sat up to greet me for the first time in two days. He looked so healthy and ready to go home but flopped back down almost immediately after. The doctor came over to address the potassium levels again and said in the kindest way that he wasn’t going to make it without tremendous medical intervention. After that, I knew we weren’t going to be able to take my sweet boy home like I’d been whispering to him. I called my family and asked them to come see him because he wasn’t going to make it. They let us spend time with him in a comfort room. They disconnected all of the fluids and monitoring equipment. He had so much energy once he was out of the cage. it was almost like he was his normal cheerful self. He gave us hugs and kisses. It felt like he knew he only had so little time left and he wanted to spend it being happy. After about 45mins he became extremely tired and just wanted to lay down. We all knew the best thing for him was just to let him rest. It doesn’t make the decision any easier. Just watching him lay there we all knew he would have suffered more if we kept trying. We was such a good boy. No one prepares you for this. No one talks about dry food causing these complications. No one tells you to look for the signs. Please pay attention to your furry family members. They won’t speak up and they won’t let you know to check on them. I see so many good stories with happy endings, but I also see a lot of stories similar and worse than my own experience. Milkshake will always be with a bright light on my darkest days.
Now, im trying to morne the loss of my sweet boy, without holding guilt for not seeing the signs sooner. I wish you all the best and the same for your little buddies.

If you have this problem with your cat here is a good solution:
Rub Organic raw unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar with "the Mother" on their fur (cat's sides) or the top of their paws. They will lick it off. Use at least two tablespoons in a day or if necessary a few days in an emergency for cats. For very young cats reduce that amount to one tablespoon. For kittens use only a teaspoon. Rub the organic apple cider vinegar on each side of their fur or the top of their paws until you see them have relief. Remember to shake the bottle first. If you have a wild cat that doesn’t take orders, then douse him with a good bit in a small glass. A lot will bead of his fur. Also, they will not be able to lick off the entirety of it all at once. Organic apple cider vinegar will start to go into immediate action for the cat to get relief from the blockage. It saved my cat that was pissing blood and then could not pee while squatting all the time. Also, it helps get rid of UTI bacteria; Walmart sells it. Ideally, it is best to use organic apple cider vinegar because it tastes rather good and is much more tolerable for the cat to ingest it compared to the filtered kind which tastes horrible.
Remember only to use the organic apple cider vinegar as necessary. Too much too often could lead to an ulcer. From my experience a couple tablespoons a week has not hurt my cat. If it is a real emergency you could go beyond that just do not let it come to a habit of more than that each week. Keep in mind; you will likely have reoccurring bouts with this for a while. That is why I recommend some other preventative measures as you read on below:
Keep in mind that it is important to ensure cats, when feeling normal, get enough water to keep their system flowing. Ensure they eat wet cat food over dry for the moisture content, Consider temporarily stopping the cat from eating dry food or even permanently if necessary. Too much dry food leads to blockages with lack of hydration compared to canned cat food. Try putting some added bit of water in their wet food. Avoid salty meats if they are having this problem. Salty meats or salty canned food meats like tuna will stop up your cat for sure!
If you use clay litter make sure you use the unscented. Scented can irritate their pee track with synthetic chemicals leading to inflammation and UTI blockages. Never use clumping litter for cats; it can lead to blockages because cats can ingest it much easier. That can cause ingestion of sludge and bacteria leading to inflammation and UTI’s. Clumping litter is known to be extremely dangerous for kittens and not good for cats in general. Buy only fragrant free non-clumping litter, and then add one heaping tablespoon of baking soda mixed in per 10 pounds of cat litter that you use. It will naturally neutralize the smell; Just do not go beyond that because baking soda is really high in salt which is dangerous for cats if they ingest it more than a tiny amount by licking their paws each time using the litter box. I have used it for my cat and it works well, he actually prefers this litter combination. Baking soda is known to help aid and help get rid of UTI’s. Never give it to your cat other than in the litter! Additionally, use feline pine litter and add it to your litter with several handfuls to add a nice fragrant smell. A little goes a long way to just supplement the litter.
Also, consider buying "cranimals" from amazon. It is a cranberry extract that helps the kidneys and gets rid of UTI problems. Put 1/4 teaspoon in two small cans of wet cat food or equivalent to that with one big can. You can also wash out an old salt and peppershaker to sprinkle a decent amount in their food. Any amount more than that I have noticed they will not eat it. Putting cranimals cranberry powder in their food will help keep their pee acidic to break down crystals.
Additionally, "Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth" helps assist in UTI treatment sold on Amazon. It is a "diuretic" thus helps people and animals urinate 30% more to empty the bladder to keep crystals from forming. Completely safe for cats with no limitations of consumption and has no salt in it. Cats tolerate it because it has almost no taste. Just be careful not to breathe it in by getting it dusted up in the air because it is dangerous to breathe it in. Make sure to only use "Food Grade."Use at least about 1/4 teaspoon per small can wet cat food. Lastly, I have learned of a brand called "tinkle tonic" from chewy or amazon that some claim helped their cats.
Finally, consider your cat’s stress level. Stress could be another factor that can lead to inflammation of the bladder area. Try to ensure he has enough to do to keep happy.

Wish I would have known this two months ago. I ended up putting my cat down because I couldn't afford surgery and kitty ICU. If all he needed was a urinary catheter, I could have grabbed one from work (NICU Nurse) and drained it myself. Now I'm heartbroken because my 6 year old cat is gone who should have been with us for at least another 8 to 10 years!

This just happened to my cat. They gave me a $1300 estimate. They ended up keeping my baby for over a week because it was so bad and he was in acute renal failure, but never went over the estimate they gave us. I barely had the money, that is all I had, but my baby is now home and doing well.
Another story, my Bernese Mountain Dog had a huge tumor the size of my head, they estimated us $6500 to take it out. We saved for a long time and used our taxes to do it. During the surgery the vet missed a 2 mm area and did not cauterize that area because they missed it. The next morning he was loosing so much blood he needed a transfusion and ultimately needed surgery again to fix his bleeding. While in surgery is when they realized they had missed the spot.
Long story short, before they took him back into surgery they emailed me another $4000 estimate and said we had to sign it or my baby would die. So of course we signed. But now we're stuck paying another $4000 when it was their mistake. I swear some vets care about nothing except money. 😒 it saddens me so much.

Cranberry powder in cats food once a month prevents and dissolves crystals/urinary blockage. If blocked: need penus to expel crystals (see youtube videos how to) and give mix of apple cider vinegar and water in mouth. I witness great results with my cats.

Rub Organic raw unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar with "the Mother" on their fur (cat's sides) or the top of their paws. They will lick it off. Use two tablespoons a day for a few days rubbing it on each side of their fur or paws until you see them have relief. Remember to shake the bottle first. Organic apple cider vinegar will start to go into immediate action for the cat to get relief from the blockage. Also, it helps get rid of UTI bacteria;Walmart sells it. Additionally "Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth" gets rid of UTI's over time sold on Amazon. Completely safe for cats with no limitations of consumption and has no salt in it. Just be careful not to breath it in by getting it dusted up in the air. Make sure to only use "Food Grade."Use at least about 1/4 teaspoon per small can wet catfood. One other thing I heard helps as an added precaution is using pine kitty litter from example PetCo. Clay can block their urinary tracks. Keep in mind that it is important to ensure cats, when feeling normal, get enough water to keep their system flowing. Try putting some added bit of water in their wet food. Avoid salty meats if they are having this problem.

My female cat is having trouble urinating...it hurts me to see her squat over the litter box and nothing come out...I took her to the vet and they gave her antibiotics first to see if it will help. $160. Other treatments and tests were gonna run me close to $600 and that’s just tests not even treatment....why does vet care have to be so expensive? What’s worse, my other cat had be diagnosed with glaucoma and he’s on prescription eye drops...that was literally a week ago and his treatment already cost me $600+ dollars. Both my cats are old, 15+ years so I don’t know what to do? I feel like at this age everything is going to start deteriorating but I don’t want to think about the possibility of putting them to sleep because of money...I’ve had them half my life :(
Male cat is so far doing better with his eye...it doesn’t hurt him anymore but he is partially blind. The female cat, we have to wait and see if she responds to the antibiotics and special food for urinary health. She goes back in a week for check up....I just feel so incredibly sad and depressed about their health.

Get a can of salmon, wash out the brine mince it up and make a soup with some water. Add a cap of organic Bragg's apple cider vinegar and feed it to the cat at least three times a day. They may like sardines too. You can even add a bit of cranberry juice concentrate without any sugar, organic. It's supposed to help dissolve the crystals and Stones and is good for urinary health. The vet will not tell you this up front. You have to do a little digging and natural remedies. The best thing is to research raw diet and transition your cat to that. The commercial food causes a lot of sickness in these animals. Mostly because of the additives, chemicals and mystery ingredients that are not fit for human consumption. Cats are obligate carnivores, they need meat. Fresh meat organ and bone. They eat mice birds rabbits and reptiles in the in the wild. The closer you get to that the less their bodies will suffer trying to process unnatural food.
Please consider natural options and research raw diet for cats. This drama and pain keeps on replaying because people are blindly feeding their cats poisonous commercial food and going to the vet's who only treat symptoms and not root causes while draining your wallet.

We've been managing this with zero problems for over 5 years with apple Cider Vinegar, which works well for struvite urinary crystals. Also added organic wet food. Problem definitely was related to feeding commercial kibble. Kitty had only marginal improvements on prescription food. Many Vets don't want to talk about non-intrusive (inexpensive) solutions. It saved us $$thousands, and avoided an invasive disfiguring surgery.

  • @Anna_Stetik

I had the BEST vet in the world when my very young stray cat that I adopted got blocked. I brought him to the vet, they got him into surgery right away. His bladder had ruptured, as well, so he had to have that fixed plus the block. He stayed there for about 3-4 nights being monitored. I brought him home, he did well for a little bit, and then blocked again. Repeat minus another bladder rupture.
My vet who did the surgery both times, DID NOT CHARGE ME for the second surgery, nor did he charge me for the hospitalization after that second surgery. Between both surgeries, anesthesia, hospitalization, the meds, the pain relievers, the muscle relaxants, the 3 urinalysis, the 2 blood tests, etc, it would have cost me around $5000. I did not have to pay $5000 because my vet actually cares about the animals.
He said to me, when calling me about my cat needing to go into surgery again, that I had 'spent enough money already' and he would not charge me except for the tests because those went to a lab and they had to be paid, plus the medications and other pills, which were not much. (Under $50.) That was it.
Not all vets are only in it only for the money, Search around. Those types of vets are rare, but they are out there.
My cat is doing really well. It has been almost 3 years since his ordeal. He will be on a prescription diet for life, but he's healthy, happy, and while it was costly, it was worth every single penny.

The homeopet feline uti is $17.99 at petco if you buy it in the store, but if you buy it online and do store pick up, it’s only $7. It has really good reviews on a number of different websites, and you can put it directly in their mouth, don’t have to get them to eat or drink anything.
Using that and also squirting water into his mouth with a syringe without a needle attached (slowly and only a little at a time, then let them swallow it) after 12 hours he finally became unblocked (red mucus plug discharged) and he’s now drinking water on his own, so I’m hopeful he’ll be ok…

I am here because my cat had this problem last week. The ER I took him to was a 24 hour hospital so luckily he was able to get care, round the clock. But the bill was $3,700 UPFRONT. The only reason I had the money for this out of pocket was because I am a student and I took out a loan last year and luckily I saved a lot of it because I had plans to pay it back into the loan or save it for emergencies. Which is exactly what it was used for in this case. The ER told me that if I didn't have the money he would have to be euthanized. A pet is not just a pet. Their life should not come down to a number of what someone can or can not pay. I live in the US. Is anyone from another country here, that has had this experience? What was your experience like? Is there health coverage for pets? Do you get to pay overtime? I'm just curious. But its just so sad that this happens imo.

My cat got blocked at the start of October, went to the ER, the catheter, fluids, and two day overnight stay ended up under $3,000. I live in the U.S., but I know that there are pet insurances available. Talk with your vet, and see what they accept. There are also loans, which is what I used to get my cat treated. I didn't have to pay on the spot, I'm paying it off with monthly payments. I hope this information is useful, nobody told me about pet insurances or loans the first time my cat had an emergency. My best advice, is to talk to your vet and see what kind of options they have or accept.

But I want you to know that if your cat gets blocked with stones whether kidney or bladder stones you might want to look into seeing if they could take Chanca Piedra and some kind of liquid form .
It is supposed to be good for people for quickly dissolving kidney stones and bladder stones and even fibroid tumors that have become calcified .

I heard that apple cider vinegar can help to stop these crystals and unblock is that true? we are having a hard time affording food. They want the RX diet. I was using Tink tonic in his food. Someone gave him while I was gone watching him a ton of treats he blocked that’s why I went back for the second time he was doing great at every check until then, I did have the tonic in his food and the cranberry food on RX and he did wonderfully but I also heard about Apple cider vinegar please help is that true

I feel like I am watching him die. He literally found me about 6 weeks ago. He is not neutered and have been trying to find a week where I had xtra money ( Ik even with a local gov program it still cost something) so no regular vet and I have bad kidney/ureter problems was just hospitalized in first stage of sepsis a mos ago. And I feel my stuff coming back. I adore this cat and my heart is breaking. I don’t know whT to do. I’m so scared that he is just gonna die while I have to watch. I can hardly breathe with the guilt that I am feeling. He is a great cat with loads of love and personality and I don’t even know this cat. He is in pain and doesn’t know what is going on. I followed this after being told my cat would die in 2-3 days. I rescue dogs and cats and can't afford vet fees.
    This what I did likewise:

Our furball Charles was about to turn 1 year old this month. On Saturday we noticed he was not moving around as much and he wasn't pooping or peeing, we thought he was just constipated so we gave him some cat lax and thought it would go away on it's own. The issue persisted to Sunday morning so we took him to the emergency vet. We were advised that he has a urinary obstruction, his abdomen was filled with fluid. They would need to drain the fluid with a catheter which would have been $4800 then afterwards if they determined that his bladder had been ruptured, they would need to perform surgery on his bladder which would be another $3500-4000. We were also told after taking these steps, the obstruction could recur. We could not afford the surgery for Charles and had to option but to have him put down. We walked out of the ER vet having paid $785, our kitty carrier empty. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

You're doing everything else right but you keep trusting the poisonous commercial food and that is the problem.

This vet is Magnificent 💝 I wish they were all like this. I have a very fine stable of some awesome vets. And I know to stay a million miles away from some others. KNOW YOUR COMMUNITY VETS! I'm on a very tight budget - I scrape up the money for vet checks while the fur babes are HEALTHY so i know who's good BEFORE an emergency. I always keep current with 2 to 3 vets so I have options of who to call. I sacrifice with a cheap used car, cheap used phone, sometimes no heat, sometimes little food, so I can do this. When I say I love my fur babies, it's not empty words. If you arent' current with at least one trusted vet that you know well, don't tell me you love your pets. I do rescue and foster also. Do your homework for your pets, they're worth it. My best vets ARE NOT the most expensive in town, because they're in it to help animals, not slick off as much money as they can get. I also OVERPAY my vets by $20 or more if I can afford it. I bring in pizza or fruit and pastry when I can. They're going to know me, I make sure of it. All my coworker lady friends go to high priced hair stylists, and make sure to tip. I haven't had a hair cut in 10 years. I TIP MY VET. My pets are more important than my hair, any day of the week. It's all about priorities.

    • @lindawolffkashmir2768
      @lindawolffkashmir2768 Месяц назад

Yep. That is the main cause. Wet food is best, if the cat will eat it. If not, look for a urinary tract formula dry. That food can be expensive, though! I bought the Hill’s once for my cat after he got blocked, he would not touch it. So I went with Purina Pro Plan urinary. He liked that a bit better, but it was still expensive. So, one day, I could not find the PPP Urinary, and had to go with 9 Lives Plus Care. The cat gobbled it right up, and did not have any problems with blockage afterward or since. You may have to experiment around to find one your cat will eat. Watch out for foods with a high ash content, and a high phosphorus content. Stay away from bargain foods, no matter how much your cat might like it. Vinegar helps, also, by keeping the urinary tract acidic. Try to steer your cat towards wet food, even if the only thing they touch that’s wet is the lick em up packs like Churu. Offer them raw diet options. If they eat it, it’s a victory.

The frustrating dilemma you just described happened to my cat, George, over the weekend (3/27/21 - 3/30/21. The ER vet clinic inserted a catheter on Sunday at 3am, but had such difficulty bc of the inflammation, mucous, crystals etc ...and bc the catheter getting kinked. They removed it and reinserted a new one one at 3pm on Sunday wherein George was able to release his urine. He would've died in within approximately 8 hrs had i not brought him in. I was told the catheter needed to stay in for a minimum of 24 hrs. ...BUT!!! instead they called me at 10am Monday to say he was being discharged. This, obviously, was not what the previous vet advised. 😑 I was given pain meds, muscle relaxers, and a medication to help improve his bladder wall. That night George slept for a solid 7 hours without moving - as he was exhausted. And guess what? On Tuesday he strained to urinate again bc of the inflammation and could not produce any urine. He was vocal and in pain. I called my primary and I was directed to return to the ER. They did reinsert a catheter, but suppressed his bladder to remove most of the urine. This time they gave me another medication for the inflammation. It is now Wednesday, and George can still barely pee. After talking to George's primary vet, I'm taking him in tomorrow morning so that I can actually go inside and learn how to suppress the bladder and receive more personal, caring treatment. That said, I'm now out $3500 with an ongoing problem for George. I'll ask my vet if they will let him come home with a catheter for a few days. But I'm very frustrated by this outcome and the exorbitant cost!! That $ was earmarked to fix my car...but George's life will always come first 🐈 Sigh...😕...

Please people stop this suffering! I have worked for two vets and sometimes I am appalled at their suggestions. Everything is steered now towards pushing people to get insurance for their pets. We are all in a testing phase right now. Personally from my experience if the cat is that sick, you have to stop the suffering immediately by putting it down not prolonging what the majority of vets know it’s going to end up happening. They milk you, get it. It’s the same thing that happened with the medical industry. It’s sick.

WHAT MY STORY IS: My male cat got blocked almost a year ago and this is what we did. We got him a procedure to unblock his bladder and hospitalized him overnight, and then he went to get a PU surgery the next morning. When he returned there was medicine for him to take at specific parts of the day and I was always fixated on that. I monitored everything he did, ate, and drank.
RUclips VIDS ON BLOCKED CATS: Yes, RUclips strategies can be helpful but you should NEVER. EVER. Withhold taking your cat to the vet if they are showing signs of being blocked. It’s a matter of life and death; don’t rely on RUclips videos.
WHAT CAUSES BLADDER BLOCKAGE?: Stress that causes stones, urinary crystals, and inflammatory plugs. (In my situation we believe the flap door to the garage where the litter boxes was is what was causing him to be stresses AKA not being able to get to the litter box.)
WHAT ARE SIGNS OF BLOCKING?: Not being able to pee or, attempting to pee on random objects, crying while urinating, blood in urine, loss of appetite, urinating outside of litter box.
I fully recommend using more liquid based cat foods, cutting off tap water from your cats diet and replacing it with cat water, keeping the litter box clean. Keeping the litter box clean is really important because cats are clean animals. When you go to a public restroom with stalls if you walk in and see poop and pee we will probably want to go to a clean stall, this is like cats skipping over a dirty litter box. Hope this helps COMMENT BACK IF I MISSED ANYTHING!

Make sure you do not use "filtered or reverse osmosis water"with ADDED MINERALS to make it more alkaline.this can cause a blockage. Also NO DRY FOOD.EVER. that is the most important thing, that is what causes blockages.even the"precription"(hills, etc.)urinary formulas-NO DRY FOOD.
Also, make sure they do not get dehydrated, keep them inside in a cool place when it is hot out. If your cat is panting,he is overheated, and in danger of getting dehydrated.
Even Mild Dehydration can lead to blockages, the minerals that cause blockages are concentrated, and they are not getting enough liquid to keep them flushing them out.
Most cats need to LEARN /Be taught to drink water,it is not a natural thing for them to drink water, even if they are overheated/ dehydrated /near death.

I had a similar issue, my clinic had closed so took my cat to the closest animal ER I knew of which was a mistake if I had the time I could have found reviews of better places. Anyway they quoted $5500 for 3 days of unblock treatment (catheter, IV etc...) he had high creatinine levels and a very large bladder... but I don't have that money so they did a financing arrangement but 2 days in they said he was looking OK so they'd check the next morning and pull the catheter if he was good... unfortunately he pulled out the catheter overnight, they put it back in but said he'd need to at least stay another 2-3 days which would have been super expensive... I found a newer clinic and transferred him there so they could manage the catheter and keep an eye on him... he was doing ok and kidney levels were normal again I asked if the PU surgery is something he might need in the future and they said probably but quoted me around $1800 where as the first place quoted me $4500 ... anyway since he was doing ok I figured play it by ear... so they pulled the catheter later that day and he immediately blocked again.... luckily this other clinic had some vets that actually care and they said they could unblock him again or since I asked about PU surgery they could try that. So, they knew my finances were not good right now (covid and loss of job for the last year debt etc...) they made me a reasonable deal... it was still way more than I wanted but close to the initial estimate and well since it was a surgery he would probably need down the road I figured go for it, with the bill as it is, what's another couple hundred if it will actually fix the problem so it is unlikely to happen again. I can say they did the surgery and he is almost back to normal... I can't pick him up for another couple nights but he is almost back to his normal self again. I'll see how the next couple weeks go, but if some of these places did the surgery sooner, maybe more of these animals would be alive today.. .the surgery is not much more than doing the unblock and watch for 3 days in vet care thing so why not... it's likely to happen again so as much as I am against unnecessary surgery, preventative measures are my first choice.... It is sad so many vets out there are just about the money... the place I first took my cat too turned and basically told me to piss off as soon as they knew I was transferring him.... and they demanded the money now now now now now... the new place is much better and more reasonably priced and the vets actually aren't money grubbers who care nothing for the pets.

My cat was completely blocked for nearly 3 days. It was a long weekend. In desperation I looked online for home solutions. I found a video online suggesting apple cider vinegar syringed in to mouth. I gave him 5mls that night. By the next morning he was peeing like a trooper. It was a miracle cure for me and my cat. So many people claim similar stories using it.

@@chericapoutai-xb8qb I diluted apple cider vinegar with water 50/50, and used a small syringe to squirt it in the cats mouth twice a day. The apple cider vinegar breaks up the stones. The cat will pee everywhere for a few days, just a warning on that. My cat is still doing great.

Had a cat block week before Easter. Took to our vet first, they said he wasn't fully blocked but pee tests are very bad to watch him. The next day he was def blocked and in pain. Took to our very good ER vet in the next town and they unblocked and kept him there for 3 days constant monitoring. I was worried he'd block again because the following week he was peeing on the floor, but he was on his 2nd week of Hill Pres C/D food all wet and I got a Britta water filter for his water bowels and everything came together. Took about a month for his 100% turn around but he's back to being the little rascal he always was. All in all I spent about $3500 between the vet and ERvet. Very expensive and if he kept blocking and constant ER vet visits he'd have to be put down I just don't have that kinda cash. I was lucky to have this. I feel the pain of every Cat Ma/Pa that's going through this. It's heart wrenching and stressful. Best of luck.

Seems like a common problem.. It begs the question: WHAT IS CAUSING THE URINARY BLOCKAGE? I have been feeding my cat grain-free dry kibble, which I thought was ok. But now realizing, food must be at least one factor in creating the problem; something off with the mineral/nutritional composition? Can you talk more about the causes of this horrible condition, urinary blockage, in depth?

I'm getting a water fountain and the prescription food cause they say its supposed to dissolve the crystals ? What is in the food that dissolves the stones?

Just dealt with this last night. My 8 yo baby boy has been picture perfect health till then. They even said very healthy minus the crystals. We bought a cheap food last wk to get by till pay day. Big mistake.
I had to drive an hr away to Purdue University Vet Hospital. My options were euthanize him, pay $450 for the unblocking then discharge & see our vet today, or starting rate of $2k to unblock him & keep him there on catheter and iv for 3 days. They offered a $4k surgery to widen him as well.
His urine wasnt even bloody yet. Unblocked and he saw our holistic vet today. Our vet put him on a natural medicine, yanked him off the Gabapentin bc it causes kidney problems, recommended an affordable canned food with ph balance & low magnesium, a supplement for bladder health, and told us to get a water fountain & cat water. He recommended a pheremone diffuser to help keep him relaxed.
He is doing good so far.
No issues until we bought Friskies dry food. Cant prove it, but enough of a correlation for me to never buy cheap or dry food again.

You gotta watch the dry food. Some OTC dry foods are fine, avoid cheap foods like the plague. If you are having trouble affording Purina One or any of the high end urinary tract formulas, the best cheap food bet is the 9 Lives Plus Care. Do NOT get the 9 Lives Daily Essentials. Do not get the Dollar General or Sav-A-Lot, or any cheap store brand. Even some of the high end cat foods may cause problems. Wet food is better, but some cats won’t touch it. Also, track down what company makes which food. Purina makes many different brands, from Friskies to Kit and Kaboodle, and not all of them are the same. My cats absolutely hate Iams and Hills, it’s a waste to even spend that much money on it.

I've been in the blockage situation several times with my 2 Male cats. (One of them is no longer with us...he died due to complication of Saddle Thrombus)
But with my other Male cat, Spot, it happened so suddenly. He was, at the time, almost 10 years old. He has always been an indoor cat and was intact (I get enough guff for this alone) and I took him and his brother to a very inexpensive clinic that is well known in our area for charity work. (They even have one day a year where they will spay/neuter for free.) I left my cats with them and within 10 minutes I got a call from them telling me that Spot was lethargic and his head was drooping. I rushed back to the vet and the doctor came out to talk to me. He told me that Spot was blocked, that he had tried to unblock him and start a cath but was unable to. He said "I'm pretty good at unblocking them, but this one is tough. He needs an emergency room."
I rushed him to the ER which happens to be my PCP. They unblocked him and started a cath. His levels weren't looking good, they briefly mention that he has some fluid, possibly urine, outside of his bladder, and he would need to stay with them for awhile. They called me every morning to update me and he was doing good for a few days and they were ready to pull the cath and see how he did. He blocked again within 24 hours. They tell me that a PU surgery may become necessary. They pull his catheter and observe him for 24 hours. He isnt peeing. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. I cant tell you how many times they pulled the catheter thinking he would pee on his own. They tell me it's time for a PU. So I tell them to go ahead. I cannot afford it but I started selling everything I could on Ebay and borrowing from everyone.
After the PU our hope's are high. But something is wrong. Hes still not peeing. They dont know why. They call in the owner and most experienced vet. He opts for exploratory surgery, for which I will not be charged. They go in and discover that there is a small tear in his urethra. The tear would heal when the catheter was in, they would pull the catheter and the tear would reopen. Every. Single. Time. The fluid they saw on the first day was urine that was leaking through the tear. They believe, and I believe, that although VERY WELL INTENTIONED, the charity vet, in his haste to HELP my cat, may have ACCIDENTALLY caused the tear in Spots urethra.
They decide that we are going to leave the catheter in for 7-10 days to allow the tear to heal and then pull the catheter. We just just that and he healed up wonderfully and came home.
He has had a couple issues since then, like a UTI and he is on very expensive urinary food. I have to watch his diet carefully because even 2 days without that food and he can block again.
    Continued in comments.

This entire situation was going on at the same time that Spots brother, Blackie also blocked. He was taken to the ER and, just days after Spots surgery, Blackie had the same surgery.
Blackies story is longer and sadder.
      The entire cost? $8k.
      Did I have it?
      No.
Did they allow me to make payment arrangements?
      No.
I was able to make arrangements with friends and my mother in law and we managed to pay the bill, all at one time.

To give me the meds when the vet had him for 3 days they realize that i really needed the medication for him to help pee
Had surgery at the normal vet took out two stones his first day home he’s eating but still not peeing day two not a drop of pee and the poor baby has to go back to the vet for possibly a PU which isn’t even guaranteed this is so stressful and he’s under 1 year old

@@xlil0ne Oh my goodness. I am so sorry. It is VERY stressful. If they want to do the PU surgery, then let them. It's very expensive, but it's been worth it for me. It doesnt stop him from blocking but it definitely helps. That, combined with his Urinary food and hes been great. Dont stop trying! If you need help paying for surgery try calling the humane society, they may be able to help. Keep your head up!

Vets need more education in nutrition. They prescribe absolute junk food for cats with urinary issues. Cats are CARNIVORES. They need raw meat, and if they can't have that, then a high quality canned food. I had my cats on a balanced frozen raw food for years with no issues. The one month I switch them to kibble 2 of my males develop crystals and one almost blocked. Never again. Now they get Methigal, Ziwi canned, and Primal raw.

Oh no!! I was praying this would help me, my poor baby boy is blocked and I’m so much pain and every single er vet here in San Antonio has turned us away because I don’t have any money. I’m absolutely beside myself! He’s dying, and he’s hurting, and I don’t know what to do. The only option anyone has given me is to surrender him for euthanasia, but he’s alert, and awake and he can walk and talk to me, he’s my best friend! How am I supposed to just kill him because I don’t have the down payment? I never saw this coming, and it could never have happened at a worse time. I’m devastated

Had a semi-feral barn cat that got blocked. Ended up having kidneys shutting down from urine backing up & we had to euthanize him. Only time I'd ever picked him up was when he was so sick that near death. Not sure what you'd advise for such a situation. Being an outside barn cat (showed up as a stray nearly feral Tom Cat that we caught & neutered & release), then I wouldn't have been able to justify spending that money on him anyway (assuming I even had the spare money). But he was already very sick by the time we even knew. -- I don't understand why unblocking cat with catheter & IV is so expensive.

This has been a real problem for us and our five year old cat who suddenly blocked when we turned him from an indoor/outdoor cat to a purely indoor cat. We did all the right things (he spent most of his time indoors anyway, we have 4 litter trays and one other cat, all trays are large and 2 inches deep and cleaned twice daily and dumped and thoroughly cleaned weekly, they're all in social areas, there's plenty of toys and climbing areas and poles, they have a water fountain, and eat high quality royal canin wet food - we do EVERYTHING right).
So anyway he blocked suddenly and we took him to a vet and it cost $1k to unblock him and send him home. The reason they sent him home with us is because they said although he needed to urinate it wasn't too bad yet and although he had crystals in his urine the blockage was very small and just mucus.
36 hours later we saw him struggling to urinate for the first time and took him back to the vet, which cost another $2k, to unblock him but keep him overnight this time. This time his bladder was full, and he was obstructed, and they ran a whole suite of other tests looking for pinched nerves and stuff and found nothing. It seems purely stress related.
So he came home again and we took him back to the vet in the morning (more stress for everyone involved) and they confirmed although he peed last night he was holding in his pee again, but they were able to express it without putting a catheter in, so $105 and we're out the door.
I know vets cost a lot but they also have a lot of costs and so it's not ridiculous. Also I love my cat more than anything and am happy to pay to help him. But at $3k/week (or even $730/week if we go every day and they can express him without a catheter like today) I can see that this would bankrupt a lot of people (including myself) very quickly if it continues.
I'm sure I'll be back there tomorrow or the day after.
Yes we have multiple kinds of tray in multiple places and with multiple litters. The only thing we twigged on last night was that he sniffed all four trays then walked away, possibly because he smelt our other cat on them (who loves to use all of the trays). Now we're trying to keep two trays separate from that cat so our sick boy can use them solely but watching trays 24/7 is hard work, and even the littlest bit of pee might turn him away (if it's the cause) and destroy all of our good work.
It's hard. And the emotional toll on him (and us) is devastating. I can only imagine those other cats with real problems like actual crystals.

My cat blocked twice and had to get not only the PU surgery, but a bladder surgery as well because they found stones. The only reason we were able to do all this is because we had a medical credit card. Unfortunately, we will be paying off that card for the rest of our lives now, probably. I'm very happy that my fur baby was able to get the help he desperately needed, but I do feel as a whole that vet charges (medical charges in general) are far too high, especially nowadays. I can't seem to find a job that wants to pay me more than $15/hr - which SOUNDS good, but that amount is nothing when you live in Florida. I appreciate and thank every vet for what they do, but there has to be a better way, cost-wise... I love my animals and want them to have long, healthy lives and it makes me feel like a horrible person that I can't always afford the things :(

Cat’s bodies can not tolerate dry food. It puts them in a constant state of dehydration. Switch to wet food and you won’t have to put your cat through all this. It’s heartbreaking. Grain free wet food is ideal, but ANY wet food is better than dry. No dry food at all.

I dropped my cat off at the vet hospital , they told my original vet it would $1500 to treat my cat for 3 days with fluids and unblock him. So my vet told me go there, they are waiting on you guys. Within an hour the vet hospital calls me and tells me $1000 was already billed just for the blood work. I never agreed to blood work, he was already treated by my original vet that sent me there. My original vet is the one who called them to get my cat seen right away, because he was about to die. He was unblocked the day before and was blocked again the very next day. My vet does not do overnight care, so she called them and they said they can do it for the $1500. Now this is how people get sued, because when I got there, I told the receptionist the price I was told by my vet and I want to be sure the price of the treatment is correct, So we are on the same page. She said yes, the deposit is $1000, which I paid. Now why would you run blood test on a cat that needed to be unblocked immediately? You know the cat is stressed and blocked so everything is going to come back bad. The treatment was not going to change, he was still sedated and unblocked. Now after my cat has been unblocked rested and been on an IV, then run basic blood work to see his levels. Now I have to wait until tomorrow to see how much more they are trying to charge me, knowing they have my cat under their care and may mistreat him, if I don't agree to this new amount they made up. Because, the vet decided on her own to do blood work before and after he was unblocked, but never called me for approval to run these test.

Just had this same thing happen. It cost $4,500 for them to put the catheter in and monitor him for 3 nights. They wouldn’t even take him until I payed $5,000 upfront. Get pet insurance. You never know when this shit can happen. I spent so much money on my cats to make sure they are healthy and have the best food, and it seems it was all for nothing.

That scumbag vet ran your pockets. It should cost no more than 600-800 for the catheter and 110 for each night your buddy stays with the vet. Bloodwork might cost a little bit more so your grand total should never be over $1600, but 5 grand is highway robbery and they totally took advantage of you! Im mad for you! 😡
