So, denier measures the weight of the threads (the mass in grams per 9000 metres of the fiber). 1000D uses larger and heavier threads than 500D. Therefore there are fewer threads per inch in 1000D than 500D, and you might say that 500D is a tighter weave as a result.
What makes this all a bit complicated is that Goruck doesn't use standard 1000D Cordura, they use 1000D Tufstuf which is particularly stiff and abrasive - moreso than the 1000D that other manufacturers use (Recycled Firefighter for example). I don't know if there's anything similar available in 500D. I'm not really familiar with the benefits of this form of 1000D, but its been a staple of Goruck for a while.
I think that hair magnet property is the DWR coating they happen to use on the material, and not the fabric itself.

Thanks Marc! I shall pin this so people can see it :) And that would make sense on the hair magnet, because I've found this to vary so greatly between manufacturers and even within different runs from the same manufacturer. My Bullet Ruck 500D definitely picks up a lot more dirty and hair than the GR2 (which literally seems to pick up nothing). In any event, thanks for the info!!

    Greetings from sunny England,
I bought my first synthetic ruck back in 1980, a Karimor Jaguar in KS100E, a 1000D precursor to Cordura, which is still on the market. It served me for almost 40 years, 30 of them as my daily 75L pack. During that period it suffered one zip failure, a seperated shoulder harness (when I overloaded it, and me - ouch!), and somewhere on its surface it got pierced by the point of a wayward Sykes-Fairbairn knife that escaped its sheath, but even years later no one could find the hole. It only truly died due to mould resulting from a flooded storeroom.
I've had lighter 500D 3 day bags and have worn them out, broken zips, straps pulling out of their mounting points, and finally wear holes in the fabric. One of these survived 10 years. I've always avoided (where I can) lightweight fabric in favour of the heavier materials. All my MOLLE is 1000D Cordura, apart from a few items that were not available, and to me the lighter ones feel flimsy.
Anyway, when it came to bying a replacement, I bought a Karimor SF 500D MultiCam pack. The first thing I noted, when comparing it to my Warrior 3 day 1000D bag, was that I could see daylight through it. H'mm I thought, that isn't going to keep the rain out, and again it felt like it would not survive much of a beating. So it went back. I cannot find a MultiCam large capacity 1000D pack, and today I'm thinking of going for a RUSH 72 2.0 55L as a stop gap.
For those who are issued their kit, 500D has the advantage of being lighter, so you get to carry more useful kit, and when it gets worn, you hand it in and get a new one. So longevity for the services is not an absolute issue. From friends who served in the sandpit, I heard that for each tour, they were issued a "black bag" which contain all bright and shiny brand new kit, which they didn't have to turn in at close of play. I presume that for the bean counters it just cost less to do this than run a more complicated logistics train.
So my final take goes thus:
    1. If a lighter load or the opportunity to carry more gear for the same weight is what you need, and you have the budget to periodically replace your ruck, and you use dry bags as a matter of course, then go 500D.
    2. If budget, or the desire for a ruck that will grow old gracefully with you, then go 1000D.
    Okay that's it.
    Dean

I really want a GR2 26L but they are out of stock... I am considering getting it second hand but having an issue deciding whether to hunt for 500d or 1000d. Pliability vs durability. I want something that could and would last me a lifetime. I want to to use it as a onenag for weekend trips, secondary bag for longer travel, and maybe occasionally as just a general edc bag. This is my first time getting a backpack costing more than $30 so I want to be sure of what i am getting. What do you think?

How to tell visually when buying online new or used if it’s the 500d or the 1000d version, is there any indication or label tags on the pack??

That spicy bag looks great! My GR bags regardless of 500 or 1000d are Lab hair magnets. Next dog needs to be a dark color so it doesn’t show as bad. Thanks for the vid!

That pink, tho.😍💖 If they could make that in a GR2 26L with molle that matched the pink (or just leave the molle off of the front because who honestly needs 18 loops to hang stuff off on the front of a bag), I would buy it.

He asked for one word, ha. What should I have said? Generally it really depends on the bag which I prefer. I like 500D on the GR2 because there are a lot of zippers bunched up so if it's stiff like 1000D those corners can get rough. I prefer the way 1000D feels on a GR1 normally.

I have 1000 D bags and 500D the 1000 D bags still look new and all the 500D bags all have loose threads and holes in them!!! Yes they are lighter but not by much at all! I feel ripped off with the 500D bags because they don't last

  • @dylantodd9574
    @dylantodd9574 2 года назад

500D bags are not "broken in" by the time it gets to you. It only feels that way when compared to how difficult a 1000D bag is to break in. I don't really understand the "make it mine" comment. The bag is not broken in simply because it's 500D; it will still wear-in based on the actual use of the operator. GR1 comparisions aside, I have several assault and misson-specific packs that are 500D and never at any time have I thought the bag was not durable enough to hold search and rescue gear, weapons, rigging equipment or anything else. They've fallen down cliffs, been runover and in one case shot. There is no issue with the 500D itself. Even the new Ruckers are 500D and I've used them througout rigorous workouts without issue. What it does mean is that it's easier to fit into the pockets and it's less punishing on you during the first 2 months of use.

I've mentioned this several times in videos to follow. 'Feels' broken in.
