  • This video talks through some ideas of how one might achieve success with a project, from initial curiosity, passion, strategy, belief, persistence, and daily tenacity, all the way through completion.
At this point, my aim is to finish the thing by May 1st - maybe this is ambitious, but let's see if I'm "successful" at reaching that.
DAY 36 of daily videos! :)

My working definition of success (for now) is - having options. What this means is that given any situation you find yourself stuck in, you have options to make changes. Namely around where you live, how you make money, and what you do in your spare time. By this definition, I see someone on median income, but with the ability to up sticks and move jobs to another state or another continent as successful, compared to a millionaire who feels 'stuck' in their life (and lifestyle) with seemingly no way out. I am relatively happy with my life, but I have been working to make adjustments so I always have at least 2-3 different realistic options available to me on the things that matter. This makes me feel successful. Part of this is inspired by the financial independence community, but it really is not about being rich or financially independent. It is more about feeling stuck vs feeling free to make changes. For me, having practical alternatives also makes me feel more content with my current situation. Not sure if this makes sense, this is the first time I have written this definition of success down.

Your definition of success sounds a lot like "being in control of your own fate". Which is great for your long term Happiness. How would you apply it to writing a book? Having total artistic control over the end result? Finishing only when you are happy with it?

For success, I like the Japanese concept of ikigai: basically, balancing doing work in the world that I love, am good at, meets the world’s needs, and that I can earn money from. ✌️

I think what success looks like is highly dependent on you expectation. If you expect to sell a million copies anything less will look and feel like a failure. If you expect to just get it done, you don't even need to get it published or sold for this to be a successful project.

I'm going back to college at 40 years old, after ~20 years of being out of school (7 or which was spent not able to work because of mental health)! But now I'm on my 2nd semester and I've been invited to an honor society because I've raised my GPA to a high level! I wish that I could say that was a goal, but honestly, I was just trying to do my best. And apparently my best (for these last 2 semesters) has been 4.0 (but I'm about 3.58 overall, with my transferred units). My goal and view of success is vague but I know what it FEELS like. That is: To make an exciting, adventurous, compelling future for myself. Or, in other words, to feel like I'm going somewhere and to have an optimistic view of what lies ahead of me. I'm taking on a lot right now (including coming back to mental health vlogging, recording my mental-health-related music album, volunteering, etc.) and I couldn't be happier!! I wish I had more "solid" goals right now other than to "do and feel my best" but that feels like all I can do without tipping into "I NEED TO BE PERFECT" mode.

Success to me would be having done something and being able to see that I've improved on where I started, especially when I originally thought I couldn't do the thing. Or if someone else told you that you couldn't do the thing.
One of my goals is to draw hyper realistically. I still can't do that but just being able to see that I've got closer to that goal feels like success to me, even though I'm not there yet.

For me succes would be, if I came to the end of my life, looked back and felt content.
I would hate to look at my life and think of succes in terms of money, wealth, objects or status. For me, that would mean I would have truly failed as a person.

I like the white lineart on the blue background. As someone who makes comics books as their career my advice is to learn by doing and studying as you go. I see too many who try to study and plan for a year or years even, when they really just need to start making comics. I would be very curious to see a comic made by you with the white lineart on the blue background.

Success can only be understood after you take stock of your values and set expectations.
I value the happiness and hope I help inspire in others. No other measure will make me feel true success. My love language is acts of service. What I create is something to promote those values.

I used to define success as being the best at what I do. But this mindset can and does lead to burnout quickly in my industry. So, I changed my definition of success as being able to afford little luxuries without breaking the bank and people coming to me with job offers. I'm happy to say I have both, and I'm content. As for being the best, I still strive for it, but now it's more of a long-term personal goal that can and will go on.

Hey miraculous being ❤ thanks for sharing your inner counsil and struggles! I'd define success based on your inner balance, ofc you can achieve corporate goals and physical dreams, but does achieving them make you truly fulfilled and happy? Do you treat others like you want to treat them? And do you feel nourished by your day to day life? To me success is purely based on enjoyment of every minute, acceptance of yourself as well as the aspiration to use your potential for the best possible outcome, instead of comparing to others :) as long as you smile while going to sleep, success is already accomplished 🌈

I've thought about this question a lot. And I've realized that the question itself is problematic. We are trying to come up with a healthy definition of success, so that we can then pursue it, and when we achieve it, we'll feel good that we achieved something. But why do we need to be successful to begin with? Even if it's our own personal definition.
Do we really need to pursue a goal to feel fulfilled in life? What if the goal is to just learn to live a physically and mentally healthy life, day to day. Then success would not be something to be achieved long term, but something that can be achieved daily. Did you live today the way you wanted to? Then you're successful! For today. Goodnight. Tomorrow is another day.
Then doing things like creating something becomes completely detached from success. As part of your life, working on a creative project should be part of your day, and if you achieve that, then you're successful. And the creative project iteself, well, maybe, there's no such thing as a successful creative project. Maybe, it's just something that's inside you and you want to share that with the world so you let it out, in the best form you can, and once you're done, it doesn't matter if anyone sees it or buys it or likes it or hates it or a twitter mob comes after you. Your success and failure is not linked to the success or failure of your project.
That's how I feel. But when I try to create my own comic or animatic, I don't like the drawings and I decide I need to improve my drawing a lot before I can tell stories and then I get back on the hamster wheel of chasing success, so who knows if I'm even right about success.

Im a comics editor and I quantify the success of a title via its impact to its readers. I find that creators feel inclined to make a comic because they want to create a space that they can share with others (that being a feeling, a memory, or a thought via a story.)
My dms are open if you ever want to chat about your project. Keep up the great work!

Success for me is "being in the flow". It doesn't involve an outcome, success criteria or time frame. Just doing what im doing without self criticism or self satisfaction, nor being concerned with outside influences. The payoff is all that comes with being in the flow.

I have always thought that hard work trumps talent. You can't be successful with zero talent, there must be some to start with. But you can have more success with some talent and a lot of work than someone with a lot of talent who works erratically or is flaky. That's been my life experience, anyway.

hmm... i haven't had a lot of success in my life, mostly sabotage. i think now that i escaped abuse, the success is my own peace.
but, extreme poverty can shake that up a lot. idk how to get out of my situation yet.
if im gonna be successful in life, i hope i can live comfortably one day by earning more than what i need.
honestly, that's the bare minimum though.
if i was to step out of my situation completely, i would love to have some new friends one day since i left everyone behind. and move to the city. id also love to run my own creative business. if i can have people to call on one day for a coffee, walk, hike, bike, etc. and come home to a creative project, i would feel successful.
    Thanks for being my parafriend!

As a visual artist myself, i don't believe in success. My only motivation to get my art done will forever be my desire ti see it done. As soon as an institution, market, scheddule, or client ia involved... it's all fucked up.
I have a lot of envy of people that sees its art as a financial project too, it's like a superpower to be able to see your creations as products made for profit, but in my case, inreally need to get the money pressure with a side job in order to feel free to create whatever the hell i want.

I've defined success in my life qualitatively rather than quantitatively, in this way: I believe I am successful when I can not only provide for the needs of my own family, but also at least one other family, at least temporarily. If that means daily rice and beans, but we are happy, healthy, and cohesive, and able to help teach another to be, then I am successful.

Success is the journey not the end result. Lol, I mean... I've maxed out things in gaming. I'm a completionist I always thought that by the end of the obsession something would be different but nothing happened. It wasn't like finishing a good book or something, if the process is harsh you just want to be done with it and that's never good for creativity. I would almost want to take the time back, because I spent it way too seriously. But maybe I needed to go through that, so maybe failing is success, because you get to learn from it. Yeah, failing = success.

Success for me is finding a task easy.
My hobby is training and showing cattle. Sometimes I can win classes and championships but I feel stressed and anxious at the end of it, because the animals played up and I found it l difficult and scary. Other times I've won nothing but my animals were relaxed and well behaved, and I realise I've enjoyed those days more.
