I was homeless in Dublin, in 1999. A French expat, trying to find work. My dream was to work for U2. You can laugh, but I got robbed one night and lost everything because my then roommates didn't trust me and wanted me out. So from a French U2 fan dreaming of meeting Bono, I got to dream of eating instead. From eating house to eating house, this was my life for almost three months. I had a roof, but no money, no heat, no breakfast and no dinner. I wrote my story, tried to promote it, even contacted Simon Community. I wanted to tell what it's like to dream the impossible for then to lose everything. I got to turn my life around by eventually finding a home, then work. It took me 20 years to realise that I still had the same dream. Today, more than ever, I want this dream to come true. My passion for a rock band kept me going. U2 gave me hope, love, warmth, courage. Music is therapy. I will never forget my homeless life. I hope Tesco can forgive me for stealing a Mars bar because I was hungry.

One of the best things Dublin can do for their homeless is getting them a universal basic income. Money straight into their hands. This was tested in various North American (Vancouver, Texas, Stockton) cities and led to significant reduction of the homeless population and was even cheaper for the city than 'the usual bureaucratic programme'.

Giving them an income for what? Booze and drugs? A long term homeless person needs rehab, therapy. They need to learn to get up at the same time every day, make their bed, cook, wash dishes, keep a home tidy. All this, someone has to show them. If the person has been homeless for a long time, this is a lot of hard work.

@@valeriehartman3705 Have you even read about the UBI pilots with the homeless? And you're talking about it as if it is solely THEIR and not the SYSTEM's failure! They need to do this do that stay clean, wake up at the same time etc. In other words, our general capitalism driven affordable housing crisis ....is all the failure of the homeless person?

@@sondorp You think what you think. I have been homeless. I got my home and income, limited, but made it work. It wouldn't work for all of them. Most of them need urgent assistance before money.

@@valeriehartman3705 Urgent assistance costs money too. I ve been homeless myself too and i can tell you that besides other things, a UBI would have hugely helped me in finding both a job and housing. It's the stigma which makes one even sicker.

@@sondorp Yes, and I agree with you, but some of them, homeless for years, need to learn to live with a normal routine again. Of course, they need money - don't we all do - but they need assistance. I am sorry you were once homeless like I was once. Yes, urgent assistance costs money, but giving money just like that is guaranteed they will spend on booze. Most of them - not all of them. I have given in hope that they will buy food. Shelters don't work for everyone either. I know it wasn't safe for me.
