The National Museum of African American History and Culture takes center stage this Thursday, January 12 at 9 a.m. EST / 8 p.m. CST on ABC Television Networks, Taking the Stage: African American Music and Stories that Changed America. This two-hour celebration highlights the museum's Grand Opening.
Filmed live at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the showcase features music, dance and dramatic readings by a wide range of stage and screen actors. Oprah Winfrey, Stevie Wonder, Mary J. Blige, and Tom Hanks are among the many artists who participated in the program, which includes a special salute to the Tuskegee Airmen.

Perfect quality in her voice, clear words and adlibs, the growls and rasp in her voice makes the song HER’S cause guys, she just can’t copy the artist voice. She is Christina not Lena. No. We don't have a lack of a musical ear. She's flat in parts, rises up to notes. She OVER rounds her notes and falls off of the end of phrasing and is super pitchy...... now you? I love her, but not in this moment.
As a musician, I can say this was not a very good performance. My ears were actively cringing listening to this. She did too much unnecessary riffing and running, she was off pitch at times, was too loud at some points, and rushed the song instead of nice and slow the way it was SUPPOSED to be sung. Yeah she can't copy the artist's voice and artistry but if you're going to sing someone's song at least do it right, and she did not. If this was her own record, then fine. But for someone else's song, yeah no. It's constructive criticism.

Correct, Lena Horne first sang and popularized the song, but Christina is doing Etta James’ version - whom she actually met in person and greatly liked and approved of Aguilera before her death.

@NL Q Okay, you replied to me. So I’ll reply. Second, you have no idea what you are talking about. You think you do but you don’t. Yes Christina Aguilera is paying tribute to Lena Horne here. Yes she is singing Horne’s signature song “Stormy Weather” which is what she is known for. But if you’ve actually listened to Horne’s version, which I doubt you have, you would soon understand that Aguilera is not doing a faithful version of Horne’s song. Now speaking to Etta James, she covered “Stormy Weather” later in life and made it a more blues version instead of Horne’s jazz stylized version. Which again I’m sure you didnt know either. As James is an oft cited inspiration of Aguilera, Christina’s cover here is more closely styled from Etta James’ version although it was Lena Horne’s signature song. That being said, Christina still didn a really good job singing this song although it is a bit farther from Lena Horne’s version. Nonetheless, a capable singer was chose and a capable singer performed the song.

Not her thing. This is such a hard song to sing. You have to learn the melody to be able to sing it artistically just like the old singers sang this song. This isn't just all about vocal power, you need more heart and soul to be able to sing with the wonderful melody of this song. Anemone 21 I agree and disagree. She really made this song “Christina”. Lol and that’s the whole point of a tribute! It’s not to sing it exactly like the original but interpret it in your own way. That’s singing 101. Christina emoted so well in the lower sections of her voice, but I do agree that at the end and the higher notes it was all vocal acrobatics. Still love her but she did well. You don’t see Mariah Carey or Beyoncé paying tribute to these amazing women in music so we should stop being so negative and appreciate these artists while they are still alive to even pay tribute. 😂 imagine Ariana grande or Lizzo or Demi Lovato paying tribute to Etta James and/or Lena Horne. Not cute.
She is beautiful, but her tone of voice isn't right for jazz. A woman who has a voice that is a tiny bit raspy while singing gives jazz more soul. Not a voice that is perfectly clear. One like the original artist.
