It's amazing how much DMC: Devil May Cry's Vergil influenced DMC4SE's Vergil. From the extended Yamato combos, teleporting summoned swords and the most amazing addition: Just Frame Judgment Cuts. It fits Vergil so much that you would be forgiven if you forgot that DMC3 doesn't have it.

You've actually helped me realize something.
In a very key way, Devil May Cry has A LOT in common with the Yakuza series--most especially Yakuza 0! An argument often made and that I agree with is that the wacky, over the top, larger than life nature of Yakuza is precisely what allows it to be a sincere, heartfelt, *human* story. I've realized it's practically the very same with Devil May Cry: its over-the-top, larger than life, *crazy* energy is the very thing that enables it to come across as sincere when it means to.
You spend more than plenty of time riding the highs. You participate in the wackiest shenanigans, have some laughs, and engage in some of the coolest combat you'll ever experience. It really lets you bond with the characters. So much so that when things take a dark turn, when things spiral out of the heroes' hands and hit their lowest, heart-wrenching moments, you're right there with them, and you really *feel* it.

This was always a franchise I enjoyed from afar despite never playing (grew up in a religious household, no way a game with devil in the title was going to be allowed). I actually ended up playing DmC first when it came out and never really understood the hate because I enjoyed it. It wasn't until I finally played through the original series when the fifth one came out that I could understand why DmC might be upsetting to fans of the originals. I like to think it wouldn't get as much hate if it was made as a Devil May Cry clone instead of a reboot.

As a fan of the original series, I was also skeptical of the reboot at the time because the trailers showed a Dante that was impossibly different. Most people were just upset that they changed his appearance and (more so) character. But I think everyone has more or less reached the consensus that it was a good game. The combat was fantastic and the set pieces were up to par. Dante at the end even becomes likeable. It's just a shame to lots of fans that they 'reinvented' Dante as drastically as they did.
But glad to know people are still enjoying all sides of the series!

Also I want to put out there that 4 is great for new players like you said, but deep within it is also buried a game that was so advanced that it basically kept the series alive for 11 years until 5 came out and even now has some tricks up its sleeve all its own. The hardcore DMC players love it so it’s definitely very cool to hear a more casual player take to it so much as well, most today just go ‘it’s good but it’s only half a game’.

36:22 I disagree because at the beginning of dmc3 dante is super reckless and immature. It’s hard to even see how this is the same character from the first 2 games but by the end of the game he’s matured a lot and resembles himself from the first game more. Then in the first game you see he’s still a bit cocky until he finds out he killed his brother. Ever notice how he stops cracking jokes and gets super serious after that? Very similar to dmc2 Dante.

I can understand the appreciation you have for DMC2, as I do too to a certain extent.
Since instead of being someone who does not have much attachment to the Character Action genre like you, it is someone who loves it and has dedicated a significant part of my life and experimenting pretty much everything that has come out of it, so it seems ironic that we, technically the two opposite ends, have a similar stance but for different reasons.
I always value DMC2 more for its historical relevance to the genre than its design errors, as it not only introduced mechanics that will be iconic to the franchise, just like the Bloody Palace, more of a playable character or a technical advance to what would be Dante's styles, or also that are either intrinsically part of the genre like the lock-on which by now should be essential for any game or the directional attacks. But also to inquire unexplored potential that to this day has not been explored in the genre as the like Devil Hearts.
The ingenuity of the Devil Hearts consists in being a mechanic that directly alters the function of the Devil Trigger or "Super-Mode" of the character, giving more variety to a mechanic that is almost always static. And for a game from 2002, very few games dared to do the same in the future, and none of them proposed anything with the same potential.
Of course, this does not take away the fact that it is not a good game and that it generates me more than once a frustration due to the contrast between what it could be and what it ended up being. But I can't help but give my respects for what to deliver to the franchise and what it meant for the history of the genre.

What a great find this video was. Made me stay up way later than I should have, not that I'm complaining, though. I'm also relatively new to the franchise and just finished DMC 5 yesterday after going through all the others, except DMC 2 that is, but maybe I'll give it a shot after I'm done getting everything I can from DMC 5 just to see how goofy it actually is. Anyhow, you got something special here. Fantastic video, friend.

Not gonna lie, didn't expect such quality from a random recommended video, it's crazy the amount of dedication it shows and how not even being a player of the franchise, I can leave with a good grasp about what it is about, love the way in which it was presented.
