I watch every single movie you make and agree with you on every point. I'm 71 and was raised the same as you except I'm from central Minnesota. I'm down to 42 lb. Bows and getting a little slower. Just want you to know how much I enjoy your stuff. Your showing people what bowhunters really are! Thanks
“I’ve killed hundreds of deer and hogs and I know I’m not a good shot. I know what might distances are and I don’t cheat them.” Probably the most intelligent thing I’ve heard a trad archer say. I think people get to caught up in this knew wave of shooting information and most people should stick to what they know, and be confident in YOUR skill level and don’t get caught up in other peoples skill level. Be smart, keep it close and more importantly use woodsman ship to get those deer close. people think they have to Shoot a golf ball size group At 30 yards In order to be successful in the deer woods. Robert you prove that wrong time and time again. No one can argue with your woodmanship skills and those tight groups you just shot. Greatly appreciate all the videos your putting out. Keep them coming. God bless!
Robert a few years ago I got into snap shooting and now I cannot get full anchor. My buddies call me “3 More Inches”! I see you are releasing before hitting full anchor also, but you seem to do very well on accuracy. Goes to prove everyone is different and can be successful if you know and don’t exceed your own personal limits. Great video as always!!!
Mr Robert that was simply the best information put out in years. On the Leatherwall they had a thread on Who's your archery heroes. Many said Fred Bear ,Ben Pearson, The Wentzels, Ron Leclair. Then I seen your name a few times. Wow what an honor to be in that company of Legands. Thank you for your Honesty and keeping things real.
Robert I sure enjoyed watching this video of yours. I especially respect your attitude toward "Ethical Shooting." I live in eastern Oregon and primarily bowhunt for Rocky Mountain Elk. I have competed in archery, in just about all classes and have been shooting archery for 63 years. I'm now 77. I have shot competitions such as the marked 3-D shoot at Redding, California many times where the longest target is 101 yards, as well as other shoots with similar yardages. But even when I hunted with compounds, I would not take a shot over 20 yards. I had only one pin in my sight and it was sighted for a maximum distance of about 22 yards. It makes me mad when I hear guy's talking about shots they made at 70, 80 yards and even more. When I lived in Portland, Oregon my brother and I would travel about 300 miles each year to this part of the country to hunt. I never added up the cost of those trips, but it would have been much cheaper for us to go to the supermarket and buy beef. So I don't need to take an uncertain shot and wound an animal and have him run off and die a miserable death, being eaten by the coyotes while he's still alive, so that I can go back home the great white hunter. I recently bought a longbow from Jeff Phillips of Instinctive Addiction Archery and should have it this coming Monday. My maximum shooting distance at animals has now been reduced to 15 yards. After all, it used to be that people took up archery as a challenge because you have to get close to the animals. Anyone can launch arrows at animals at 80 yards, but how many of them can say I shot mine at 12 yards. That's where the real challenge of bowhunting is, learning the animal you are hunting and outsmarting him. No, I agree with you 101% and appreciate your ethical take on hunting. Thanks for this video and good luck hunting buddy. Jim
I love watching your videos because I struggle with target panic as well and my max distance is 15 yards on a good day it’s just nice to know I’m not the only one😂
Fred Bear had very much the same style. You're coming right back into your vision line and pulling through your release, and the outcome shows it's working just fine for you. I know many folks who can anchor for ten seconds and still not shoot as well. :) Well done, my friend. I'll be 77 in about three weeks and I thank the Lord for being able to still do this wonderful sport.
Another fantastic video! It's videos like you have been putting out lately that has you subscriber numbers doubling in last couple months. Your channel is rock solid and very helpful. Target panic sucks! Took me 2 years to beat it myself, almost causing me to give up on traditional back in the day!
Another great video. Sound practical advice. I like your style and prefer to release as soon as I'm at my anchor. I dont like Gap shooting near as much as instinctive shooting and keeping it close. I prefer split finger because it gives me a more consistant anchor. I hope you have a blessed season coming up.! Just a few more weeks until bow season opens here in N.C.
Mr Robert I know the struggle. The last two years it has grabbed me and my confidence is low. But I love it too much to give up! I’ll keep fighting the good fight 😁 Thanks for the video I really enjoyed it!
Great video Robert!!!! I've had problems with target panic and still learning to coexist with it. It gets me out hunting. Thanks again for sharing God bless you
Thanks again Rob really enjoyed it. Also thanks for showing off your awesome looking hunting dog.A good dog is such a great companion and worth his weight in gold. Thanks again!
Tp! I don't wish it on anybody! I have struggled also for many years. I even switched to the compound bow as a result. Glad you found a way to get the job done that you are trying to achieve. I love my Trad bows and shoot them a lot still. (I can barely pull it but I love the Longhunter I got from you. Love the grip and the quiet shot). I'm in the process of getting ready to hunt this fall shooting both Trad. and compound bows. Getting close is a big help with Tp. Great advice. If I don't feel good with a longbow, I go to the compound. I like to hunt and if I shoot I want an ethical clean kill.
Good video Robert, I was having that same issue not hitting my anchor, so what I did was just draw my bow and come to anchor and hold it there not releasing the arrow . I kept practicing this until it became automatic, and then I was able to slowly get my form back , hitting my anchor and not thinking about it , my groups became much tighter and stared hitting my spots more consistently , your not alone on that target panic , it seems we all get it from time to time , you just have to figure out what works for you to over come it . Good luck hunting with your new bow !
Great video. I really appreciate your content. I think the "aiming" method you're describing is Split Vision. It's the same method used by Howard Hill, John Schulz and Byron Ferguson.
I’ve suffered from target panic myself for years. I’m 46 now and started shooting bow when I was around 13. It’s a terrible feeling. I’ve tried 20 different releases. All kind of hinge styles. But when I shoot my long bow, I don’t seem to have it. I can pull back settle in and find my anchor perfectly. So, I’ve recently switched my new fancy modern day compound over to shoot fingers. And I’ve been shooting it really good. People think I’m nuts shooting my compound with fingers. But, there’s no trigger to punch, it my fingers holding the weight. “ I still love shooting my long bow more though “ there’s something about just having an arrow on a shelf and nothing else. No pins, rests or other crap… Great shooting and great video as always !!!!💪🏻👍🏻
Robert….you are a good man !! So maybe you short draw a bit 3 under BUT you seem to be pretty consistent and a fine shot at your ethical distances ! You say you aren’t an archer but a Bowhunter …. I disagree on the first part….. You are what everyone who picks up a bow should strive to be…you are an inspiration and a true gentleman !! Bravo Robert !!
A true woodsman. Same way I feel about bow hunting. Get them close and you don't have to worry about being a great shot. Of course, strive to be as accurate as possible but killing ain't the same as 3d on the archery range. Great content Robert.
Sir, you are an inspiration. If you shoot bare bow traditional you will deal with target panic eventually. You demonstrated that it doesn't have to be debilitating! Thank you.
Good video. I switched to traditional this past winter and surprisingly I lost the target panic I had with a compound. I’d draw then start trying to float the pins where I wanted and always lock low. Now I thoroughly enjoy just canting the bow, focus with both eyes on what I want to hit, and shoot. Hopefully I can be successful this fall
I have tried lots of shooting methods too...Ive gone back to instinctive shooting and enjoy it much better. You bring up a great point about what works for some, may not for others.
Great video brother. I’ve had target panic my entire bow hunting career. Sometimes i flinch so bad the deer even laugh at me. Where did you get that hat? I need me one of them!!!
It is what it is, what works for you probably won't work for someone else. I've tried three under several times but just can't do it. As we get older, there are a variety of things that seem to alter how we do anything. I've been forced to go lighter in poundage as well as distance. If you watched people all over the world shoot, and I mean people that shoot for their daily food, they all shoot different than we do and yet they are pretty deadly. Not everyone can shoot like Chris but that is okay, some of the best archers struggle as hunters. Enjoyed your video as always. And yes, sometimes we have to adapt in order to keep doing something that we love to do.
@@robertcarte95 Thanks! I've invested a small fortune in string silencers. Maybe I'm not putting them in the correct place on the string. There's a Hobby Lobby nearby and I'll give them a try. Thanks a bunch!
I too suffer with target panic, and I'm not sure why. It started about a year or so ago. And it got bad quick. Now.....this was not with a traditional bow, though I have since bought one of those. What helped at least with my bow with sights, was to sight the bow in so that the pin was NOT on the bullseye, to put the arrow into it. I have it sighted in like a rifle. I put the target just on top of the sight pin. This keeps me from having to put the pin in the bullseye itself. I plan on figuring out how to apply that same sort of "aiming" with my traditional bow. Find a way to get the arrow into the bullseye without actually having to point the arrow at it, if that makes any sense. It probably doesn't. Haha. I enjoy your videos. You have a good day!!
I think your form is just fine… very repeatable… and I’m an old man (66) and staying within your capacity as you explained it is key to all of us having success.
Thanks for this. I put a clicker back on my bow as a training aid this summer because I do the exact same thing. It’s fine when you shoot like that! Good job, take care!
Just went to three under to get a good bare shaft tune and I will never go back to split finger. My shooting has never been better. Oh and I do like dogs 😀
Really similar to the Howard Hill style I have been doing most of the time bowhunting, Only recently when getting back in 2021 did I watch the full one part video of John Lee on here and got the book Howard Hills Method of shooting the bow and arrow by Jerry Hill to help me more and used the extra pages in the very back for notes to help me of slight modification I do like Tip, let the target be the blurry object in my sight even if looking my at target as the closer arrow hurts to have blurry.
Good stuff, good shooting. I turkey hunt from the ground, no blind, compound. My maximum I allow is 20 yards. They have to be positioned just right or they walk. Been shooting recurve and getting a lot better. Still not dead deer 50% of the time, so will not go hunting till I get 99%. I draw and release, no hold. Strange how you know it's a perfect shot when you release. I need to find that more consistently.
I think it was mr Asbell who said in his book your form does t matter. What matters is you doing the same thing every time you will get good. Paraphrasing but that’s the gist.
Love the video I I'm 75 went back to split finger works best for me I'm down to shooting 50 lbs I I have other bows but the bearsuperkodiak works the best me now thanks for your info frank Angemi
Nothing wrong with that shooting ... Keeping them close is the name of the game. Target panic is exactly what you said .. Being afraid to miss which will mess you up !
What do you mean terrible form? As long as the arrow goes where you want it to, and the animal comes home who gives a sheeeet what form you're using!!!
arthritis sucks.... I am the opposite, I just went to split finger instinctive from being a 3 finger under instinctive. Close your eyes at the moment you reach Anker Then open them .. this action stop's the panic triggers : It causes the brain to think of something else.now I'm able to hold on deer and elk for up to 30 secs with 53 lbs black widow bow...: soon the panic triggers turn off Jack High country of Colorado
I actually have managed to beat target panic… 100%. I’m going to make a video about it. It worked for me, but it may not work for everyone, or even anyone else.

I buy a spool of wool yarn from hobby lobby and make my own. You can get all you'll ever use for maybe 8 bucks.

I actually have managed to beat target panic… 100%. I’m going to make a video about it. It worked for me, but it may not work for everyone, or even anyone else.
Look forward to watching it.
I really like your videos and I love dogs, I don't trust people who don't like dogs. Dogs are God's gift to mankind.
I agree!!!
