One tip for tig welding, make sure you rub it down with acetone or rubbing alcohol before welding. The surface should be clean. You know you have a clean surface when it doesn't make sparking noises that you sometimes can hear in the video.

I think they all just default to steel whenever they need rigid material. I don't even remember the last time they used aluminum for something. Their results look cool, but not everything has to be bulletproof, yeah :) They even once commented on their tendency to make things out of steel a lot during the build for the James Bond spy car when they made a small platform to lift a projector or something which ended up being really heavy.

How to get started in engineering.
1.) Learn how to measure and the units in which measurements are made.
2.) Become familiar with solving structural/design problems
3.) Learn how to do a lot of math on the go
4.) Learn how to use CAD proficiently
5.) Get a 3D printer or CNC machine and begin making things
Within a matter of months to years, you will be (actually) engineering.
EDIT: To make things like what is shown in these videos, you will need more than just engineering skills. You will need to know a variety of skills including soldering, circuit design, welding, wood work, how to use power tools, education in various scientific fields etc. That is why Hacksmith has so many people involved. Everyone brings different skills to the table. This is also why a real life Tony Stark is unlikely as someone would pretty much have to become an expert in all these fields. Most people spend their whole lives mastering/learning a single trade, let alone dozens.
Now you know what it takes. Get out there and start engineering!
