I wish there was a "modern" remodeled VHS camera similar to the new polaroids that are out. I still want the grainy 90's aesthetic and cassette tapes but there are none.
In all fairness, modern cameras have lots of buttons too, they're just hidden behind sleek front ends on an option screen. But I love the "wow this is n expensive piece of kit" feeling you get with old VHS cameras, like you have to treat them with respect, unlike modern cameras where it's shoot and move on.
An advantage to those hefty shoulder cameras was that you looked very official. In early 80s, no one even knew what a video camera was or had even heard the word "video" before, so I could literally walk into any event or stadium for free and everyone assumed I was suppose to be there. Back then, people were MUCH less suspicious of a stranger with a camera, as they usually smiled, waved and asked "what channel is this gonna be on?" It feels SO much more pro and satisfying to hug a camera on your shoulder, instead of palming a toy in your outstretched arm like every tourist. The best feature is being able to manually zoom and focus by physically twisting the lens with your fingers, to personal effect. Sometimes you want to crash-zoom or rack focus on the fly, and that puts you in precise control instead of hoping a robot knows what you want to focus on. I could capture more spontaneous reactions by holding the camera at my hip, and looking down into the upturned viewfinder with the eye-cover open, so the camera was less obtrusive than at eye level, causing people to pay less or not attention to me, and assumed I was just adjusting something and not actually recording. I still have a couple of those, mid-80s cameras, and every model had at least one cool, weird feature/gimmick that no other camera had, in attempt to compete in a new market. My Olympus VX-S405-U has an odd "gain" button that sorta mimics the look of grainy 24fps film, that arty farts always thought was cool. Nothing else looks like it.
PS: Why do you throw them so respectless aroud??? There arent much of them anymore.Didnt find any onebay at this age. They were rather expensive. And so not sold so often in the beginning of this segment.I think they have real museum-quality.
if you wanna go the semi-pro way and spend some money, get one of those blackmagic analog to sdi converters and a blackmagic pci sdi capture card to edit the raw footage on your pc. If you wanna record off the vhs tape make sure to use a tbc (time base corrector) before going in the capture card.
One reason for so many buttons and cables...is that these were made to also be a standalone VCR in case you didn't have one. (& its better to have the buttons than not have them. The cables are to hook it up to a TV or another VCR. You don t carry them around while you are shooting. Back when we only had one VCR in the house...I used to hook the camcorder up to the VCR to copy tapes. I know you probably know that, but other people here might not.
i remember in the 90s when i was kid, my dad used to have one. i will put in on my shoulder and pretending that it was some kind of lazer bazooka that you shoot alien with. lol
haha! I just recently learned that mines is a Sears, not Hitachi. I had fixed my cameras. They all work now. Just my CPR-250 is not 100% works. But almost works now!
Wow I'm may be 3 years late but it's fancy meeting you here Gilbert. Just wanted to say how much I love your video, when I watch them its as if I was there to experience those memories. Except for me they are memories I never had to due to me being born in the late 90's but glad there people like you to take the time and share your precious moment in the 80's with the world. Stay Rad my dude.
I own a Hitachi VM 1800A from 1995 (older then me) and sadly I think it’s tape mechanism is also dying (not the best way to fix things but I did notice that if I gave it a good smack it’d start taping again. I find that odd. It will also produce a usable picture when I hook it to my TV! It hurts the shoulder to use it for an extended period of time though.
What are you talking about??? The video quality on your '85 camcorder looks great!! I can't wait to make my own home movies on my RCA DSP3 once it comes in the mail! Livin' back in time is so much fun!!! :D
This episode is so different from the rest of the series in a really great way! You should make more of the videos in a comedic style like this. At least, that's one man's opinion
Daniel Lachman Check out a really old TV and you's see "antenna" on the back. That one looks like it might be an adapter for a tv not ready for cable. I had one for my very first TV.
Wow I thought that was put in there for comedic effect. I actually new that from school weirdly enough, because I'm born in 92. But I chose film and acting as an extra course in high school. Mind you, I'm from Sweden.
To be honest,I really feel that old video footage looks way less grainy than same resolution videos of today.for example if u shoot a video with 144p resolution today ,its so noisy than the same resolution video shot with those old cams,I don't know why but I feel it that way!nice video anyway!
Yeah its just a very different look. I think what you are getting at is also the artifacts that accompany some of the video compression as well - in a lot of these cameras there isn't really compression - its a raw analogue signal - maybe a kin to a record player.
Just got a magnavox movie maker at a thrift store for $10. Works perfectly. Even built in mic is perfect. Just need to order a battery. Still fun to mess around with when plugged into ac.
That shoulder foldout is for support when your recording. You put it on your shoulder. Back when things were much difficult to produce and use and nowadays technology is made to be easy for everyone.
Lucky find.. is it working fully? I have got so many cameras off ebay the last 2 years it's now really a massive collection... and I love it! Post videos on random ones being used most weeks.
Awesome! I've been experimenting with even older cameras the ones that use vidicon tubes. (Sony HVC 4000p and Hitachi VKC600) Image lag, comet trails and trippy colors love it! I'm using a Sony VRD-MC5 DVD recorder running off 12v batteries to takes videos out in the field. Though I did use a laptop with an easycap at first!
Yes! I try to get those tube cameras every time I see them at flea markets and thrifts. I have a glorious boxy RCA Newvicon from '82 and a Quasar from '80. The Quasar tube is near dead, but it makes some beautiful dreamy footage.
Hi, I need your help if you can, I have a the same Panasonic camera, but I don't remember how to play (send the signal) on a TV or to a computer, I have tried with the RCA video/audio cables that to on to the charger but still no luck, is there a button on the camera I need to push or something? if you can tell me how you do it, I will appreciated, thank for your time, and good video, keep it up.
The Panasonic looks like the NTSC version of the NV-M3. I have a couple of these but it has problems with the colour, anything blue comes out purple. I think the tube must be worn out. I like those old tube cameras with the trails left by bright lights, looks like TV from the 70s/80s. You see it on a lot of old concert videos where a stage light will go across the shot and the line it leaves is still there after cutting away and cutting back a couple of seconds later.
nowt100 U2 didn't put "Under a Blood Red Sky" out on DVD for years, allegedly because of those streaks. When they finally released it I went to Amazon and sure enough, a bunch of kids complaining about the streaks! "Was that supposed to be an effect? Annoying!"
The pictures coming from the Panasonic look really cool! Instead of having a CCD image sensor, it has a newvicon tube. So you would get what is known as the comet effect when passing by a bright light source. To me, that just adds to the whole 80's look and feel.
I have that same white Panasonic one. The actual camera in it is messed up, leaving 30% of the screen blank. 8 minutes in of playing a tape it jams up, but fixes itself. Luckily I have a clone of this camera, in red made by JCPenny. That one works perfectly.
True words my friend. Seems like we are now in the era of recording and loosing that footage like in a year and no physical content is saved. Cool cameras btw, I got 2 cameras that was on my grandfather's basement for years along with VHS and vhsc tapes that I'm now digtalizing for the family. The Panasonic (vhsC) is the only one working because the sharp (VHS) seems like it won't charge anymore.
Hey Danny, could you please tell us which VHS camera should one buy? specially if we are trying achieve a look , like the film is based in the 90s or something. Please !
is it possible to make footage look like that with a modern camcorder? i found some blank vhs tapes and vcr at the thrift store and thinking of recording footage onto the tapes using a micro-usb to av adapter.
Hey, I got the exact same Panasonic model as shown in the video (working) and I was wondering how you connected a non-proprietary battery to the camcorder, since I don't exactly want to spend $35 on a repro for mine if I can help it. Wasn't sure how else to get in touch with you, so I'm commenting here in hopes I'll get a response.
I had to buy a light style battery with the cigarette adapter if I remember correctly... something very close to this: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/113648-REG/Bescor_MM7ATM_MM_7ATM_Starved_Electrolyte_Battery.html
I have one of these in the 80's it was over $1.000 and had an extra lens with it I also bough one from a guy that used to work with me in 2000 something. The one I bought in the 80's needs a new battery it will not charge.

In my case, some of my VHS cameras didn't work with batteries straight into the camera, in that case I needed to use the charger and figure out a way to do it mobile. So I bought a bescor battery www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=113648&gclid=CjwKEAiAwfzDBRCRmJe7z_7h8yQSJAC4corOVKQO6re25NnTE6o2sv5a9inMwhdNLvt-3pjOrMNt2BoC7TTw_wcB&is=REG&ap=y&m=Y&c3api=1876%2C89827194362%2C&Q=&A=details and hooked up the charger to that (much like you would with cigarette power adapter thing in a car)
Thanks they have been in a closet for years but I got several videos I made in the 80's and a few in the 90's I hope my mom still has the one from the 80's I gave her.My dad used to have a Bell and Howell and it was a reel to reel camera.
haha. If your time machine broke down at 1986 with no way to go back to 2015. You wont be laughing anymore. You will need to save for a year for that one you have. LOL funny
That Sharp one that you think is from the 90s... its not. It is a repackage of the RCA CPR-250. Which came out in 1987. It was a damn good camera though, because every company from Sharp to Sears wanted to put their name on it.
If I get a vhs recorder would I be able to transfer the same vhs quality lets say, to my computer and then to my phone? I wanna get the exact same vhs quality to be on my phone.
hmm, If you are just wanting to turn vhs to digital then it will retain it's look anywhere. I shoot a series with VHS, and its transferred over a pinnacle dazzle: Leslie Banks At The Movies: "Jaws" it looks like VHS anywhere you play it.
Hey I got a question I picked up the 1985 panasonic and it all seems to work, but when I try to record and look into the viewer it shows the time, and the word light, any idea on what to do?
The buttons actually do things. Versatility. Flexibility. Functionality. It's almost as if Dan has never worked in video production where cameras have these controls that make them useful.
Could you help me, i want to find one of these camera for a cheap price but almost all the listings don't say if they are working. How do i buy one without that risk.
Samuel any reasonable seller with a working camera should be able to test it. That combined with a reliable brand like panasonic should be good. theres a multitude of factors, but generally if you are willing to pay more the seller will be more inclined to to help if it doesnt work.
Samuel yes all of my vhs cameras were purchased on ebay including those in this video. i believe they were from a seller offloading old univeristy student news gear.
Joseph Mccabe I used something from bescor that had a "cigarette adapter" since my camera had a cord for that. www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=208015&gclid=CjwKEAjwm-aqBRD39YPqhbzthzYSJACFj-AtsiawjI6rQhS4LzlL0bKwICQiP9SF7MlaIFuPIHPOmxoC_5Lw_wcB&is=REG&Q=&A=details
I see, thank you. I plan on getting a camcorder like the ones you used for a short film my friends and I are making, since we want it to look like it was shot back in the day. This seems like the alternative.
The prize of my collection is my JVC GR-C1 all original with all manuals carry case and extra chargers. They still make battery for it too lol so I can use it.
ruclips.net/video/kdG4ifa8WJ8/видео.html This is a detailed video about the sound equipment I used. Lavs with Zoom H1s. Totally separate from the camera.

+South West Florida Aerial sweet man! BTW, it's too not to.
3:18 and BOOM you automatically look like you were in the 80s. It looks so real!
If I get a vhs recorder would I be able to transfer the same vhs quality lets say, to my computer and then to my phone? I wanna get the exact same vhs quality to be on my phone.
hmm, If you are just wanting to turn vhs to digital then it will retain it's look anywhere. I shoot a series with VHS, and its transferred over a pinnacle dazzle: Leslie Banks At The Movies: "Jaws" it looks like VHS anywhere you play it.
its mad how even tho its modern backset, it looks still like 1990s
this is the best video I've seen so far from this guy
The begining looks a lot like an old avgn review. Specially those about the 32x and the Sega cd (that's a compliment)
aw thanks! AVGN was the whole reason I attempted to make a video in this style. Hence all the over cursing, it works with AVGN and not so much here.
Its funny how he only abuses the sears camcorder
my philosophy is, if you want to win the lottery, you have to make the money to buy a ticket.
If you have one of these cameras in 2019, youre basically aesthetic
What type of cables you use to transfer the image to de pc to record ?
Hey I got a question I picked up the 1985 panasonic and it all seems to work, but when I try to record and look into the viewer it shows the time, and the word light, any idea on what to do?
Is it dark where you are recording?
Take the lens cap off.
Back then, the more buttons means that the camera is more advanced and pricey..I loved cameras with more buttons.
I bash it a lot here, but really they are pretty amazing little machines!
Info on the battery set up please
What are the model numbers on the cameras?
dayum this youtuber is underrated. subscribed.
You think that's old!? I've got a super 8mm camera from the early 70's and it works 95% as much as it did.
The buttons actually do things. Versatility. Flexibility. Functionality. It's almost as if Dan has never worked in video production where cameras have these controls that make them useful.
what battery pack where you able to find for it?
I used an external battery designed for lights with a cigarette adaptor. The standard batteries are still made but are like $45.
I have a jvc vhs-c camcorder from 2003 and I love it I still use it to but I want a full size vhs camcoder that’s would be awesome
Do they call it a "Labtop" cuz it was invented in a lab?
Could you help me, i want to find one of these camera for a cheap price but almost all the listings don't say if they are working. How do i buy one without that risk.
Samuel any reasonable seller with a working camera should be able to test it. That combined with a reliable brand like panasonic should be good. theres a multitude of factors, but generally if you are willing to pay more the seller will be more inclined to to help if it doesnt work.
Danny Pops thanks and did u find yours on ebay?
Samuel yes all of my vhs cameras were purchased on ebay including those in this video. i believe they were from a seller offloading old univeristy student news gear.
Danny Pops thanks man i subbed keep up the great content
What kind of unit did you use as a portable battery?
Joseph Mccabe I used something from bescor that had a "cigarette adapter" since my camera had a cord for that. www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=208015&gclid=CjwKEAjwm-aqBRD39YPqhbzthzYSJACFj-AtsiawjI6rQhS4LzlL0bKwICQiP9SF7MlaIFuPIHPOmxoC_5Lw_wcB&is=REG&Q=&A=details
I see, thank you. I plan on getting a camcorder like the ones you used for a short film my friends and I are making, since we want it to look like it was shot back in the day. This seems like the alternative.
love the vintage look they give. its why im plannign to get a vhs camera soon
The prize of my collection is my JVC GR-C1 all original with all manuals carry case and extra chargers. They still make battery for it too lol so I can use it.

This is a detailed video about the sound equipment I used. Lavs with Zoom H1s. Totally separate from the camera.
Those Sony DSL 500 are pro cameras. Very funny video.
Awesome... love the vids!
