Our longing for belonging : Hiraeth

Hiraeth is a Welsh word that doesn't quite translate to English properly, so we didn't try. Hiraeth is a word with 2 syllables but is capable of housing a thousand souls within it. It is the call of the wild, the loftiness of the snow-covered mountains, the sunlight piercing the canopies, the wind with the rain, and most of all, the heartbeat of a place. Yes, you might have a 2bhk you call home but do you hear that call often? Maybe a place you haven't been to yet but somehow, your heart and soul yearns to go there, stay a while, and see if it could house your soul?
"Like seagull cry, like sea borne wind,
That speak with words beyond my ken,
A heartfelt cry with words unsaid,"
No, we aren't talking about doing what all tourists do and returning home after a month of an awesome trip. We are humans, there's no end to what we could want and what our soul could need.

This is a beautiful video, but please please look more into the actual meaning of Hireath. You are correct that there is no English translation to Hiraeth, but what it does mean is a longing for a home that can never be, it is entwined with grief and sadness of losing your land, being invited and forcefully being anxed to England, having your culture and language removed due to colonialism and oppression from the English. Having your language banned, and children beaten if they spoke it. It is a longing for Cymru (Wales), not what we have today, but a Cymru that should have been but will never be. A Cymru that should have been able to fully embrace its culture and language, poetry, song and art. It is about far more than belonging, it is about a deep yearning to be part of something that was ripped away, but your soul craves it so deeply, but knowing you will never get it. That is Hireath.
