- In the past, Uber riders haven't been pressured to tip their drivers. The app has never given the option to tip, so a part from the occasional good Samaritan, drivers had to be happy with their regular wage.
But thanks to a $100 million settlement with drivers in California and Massachusetts, tipping your Uber driver may become as normal as tipping your server.
Friday's worker misclassification settlement gives drivers permission to actively seek tips and give poor ratings to riders who hold out.
So the next time you get an Uber, if you don't tip, the driver can give you a poor rating, which might affect your ability to catch a ride in the future.
Drivers might be pleased with the extra income, and riders may be annoyed by the additional charge, but Uber could be the biggest winner of all in the settlement.
Had the case gone to trial, the world's most valuable tech startup could have been ruled responsible for costs like social security and meeting minimum wage for its nearly half a million U.S. drivers.
Thanks to the settlement, Uber drivers are still freelance contractors who set their own hours but lack access to traditional employee benefits like health care.
As part of the settlement, Uber will also create and fund driver's associations in both states and meet quarterly to address driver concerns.
Uber said it has no plans to add a tipping option to its app, a feature that rival Lyft already offers, leaving riders and drivers to figure out one of the service industry's longest-running traditions on their own terms.

btw: getting into a strangers car is just as dangerous as letting a stranger in your car. $$ talks so if your wallet is quiet, u aint talkin bout ish! be greatful for getting to your destination and remember,its a 2 way st. thank your driver by covering the gas(tip). u will sleep better at night.

People will tip a bell hop guy for opening the door and put a piece of luggage in there car but won't tip a uber driver for opening the door and loading up there luggage and getting them to there destination how sad is that there already getting a cheap steal of a ride compared to a cab what is the world coming to how sad!!

you never had to tip your Uber driver to begin with. Considering how cheap you're getting your ride compared to a taxi in general it's always a good idea to leave a tip. For good service
if you dont think tipping your driver is a new concept, you are wrong. if you think tipping your driver is too much, you are cheaper than tap water. my tip to you: walk yo ass to work, and save $$$ beyond belief. gas, grass, or ass, no one rides for free.
Good. You're already paying 1/3 the price compared to riding in a taxi. Is giving up a couple bucks really that much for you after you just spent over $100 a the bar not including tip?
If you give a rider a low rating for not tipping they in return will give you a low rating and eventually your rating will go way down leading to a deactivation
One star from me and thousands of other Uber drivers if you don't tip. Tipping has been part of the service Industry since the beginnings of time, and is not going to change just because Uber said so, that's what Uber said when they started, but no more, it is clear by Uber that tip is not included in the fare, the fare is cheap enough, very cheap and you riders know it, specially the cheap riders, they are attracted to Uber for the very cheap fares they paid, so why not tip, stop being selfish and greedy. NO TIP ONE STAR.

Ok then dont tip, the good drivers will move on to lyft or quit driving and your stuck with those psychopath drivers you hear about on the news. But hey you wanted to save 1-2 dollars on your fare after spending over $100 not including tip at the bar right???
armst012 Did you know Uber is destroying Lyft? Lyft tried to sell itself to Uber because they are giving up. Most people don't tip on Uber because you're not supposed to. Soon drivers will be replaced by self driving cars so passengers don't have to deal with shit drivers like you.

I always tip waitresses, waiters, pizza guy, hookers, car wash guys etc. I drive these same people to work and safely home late at night but I don't get a tip. whats an Uber driver to think? I can stop tipping these people, I just can't. Shame on them.

Maybe so, but they will have to wait longer times compare to the better-rated drivers, why because the poor rated riders get skipped and better riders are preferred, SO TIP YOUR UBER DRIVER, that is if you want to have a good rating.

A good quality company would not allow tips. Quality service should be the standard and included in the fare. BTW: Ever notice people who ask for/seek a tip rare provide decent service?

uber riders use uber to save money on tipping.they are cheap and self centered ppl. LYFT has tipping option though they also cheap.Yellow cab riders in NYC are the richest in heart. if uber add tip option many rider will have to depend on bus or train.
