- The populations of lilac-crowned and red-crowned parrots have been declining for decades in their native land of Mexico. However, the two species are now thriving in Southern California. Joy Benedict examines why.

They’re actually a beautiful sight if you’ve seen a flock in person
Believe it or not we had some wild parrots 🦜 here in Chicago on the Southside in the early 2000s don't know if there still here. They were real pretty they used to perch on the power lines.
When I lived in orange we had tons of them. I love these lil guys, most of what we had were the red crown parrots
Long Beach has had them since I was a kid
There's a couple that hangs out on a low hanging line in my backyard they kiss and other things 😅 but they're beautiful birds
There's a flock in mission Viejo also! Amazing when they are flying around chatting.
Looks like L.A. is a parrotdise for exotic birds. (sorry, I had to.)
Cute 👍
That was fowl.
Birds like Hollywood glamour too
👍👍👍
Flocks of them on Figueroa.
Long Beach is crazy with parrots! Out for a walk early I heard a whistle. Freaking I picked up my pace. Then I looked up and saw a parrot on a utility pole catching the culprit in action. Love it!
lol I wouldn’t have expected that. That’s cute but kind of scary 😂
There’s probably at least 1,000 of them around the 2nd/Ocean area of LB!
Parrot was throwing gang signs 💀
They’re not even out as much anymore because they cut down the trees by the old Olympic pool
@philyoutuber7270 makes sense, monkey see monkey do
I just moved to LA from Vermont.
They’re everywhere, super noisy, and sometimes throw things at me and my wife when we walk by.
Freakin’ love ‘em
Please move back to Vermont.
@@Patrick3183 ....why?
@@Patrick3183no one lives in Vermont, he’s very welcome in LA
@@vsznry They don't want to share the parrots.
why "love" something thats bothersome, I get they're pretty, but that noise is very annoying. No it's not nature, it's the city.
Angelenos love their parrots 🦜 ❤
My daughter had so many parrots around her home in Los Angeles. This was 8 years ago!!
They've been here since the 1960's after a nursery, carrying around 50 of them, were freed to save them from a fire.
San Diego in Point Loma and OB. They have been there for decades. They are vocal, fun and beautiful. They always are in twos. Almost always. They loved hanging in a palm tree in front of my house.
Interesting observation! The video doesn't state this.
Parrots select mates for life and are monogamous. And they're extremely intelligent.
Ive seen them in Liberty Station near Point Loma , they are a noisy bunch.
We have a flock here in Normal Heights as well. I hear them everyday. Love our parrots ❤️
Used to have tons of them in my yard in Arcadia, CA. Beautiful birds.
Had them in Covina as well
Have seen them in Ontario CA as well
Westchester has them too.
Yup there bye my house in El Monte aswell
We’ve had these parrots in Santa Ana for decades flying around freely.
Yes!
Right as a kid my dad would show me them when he lived in Santa Ana and I’m 40
Yup I’ve seen a bunch mostly in central Santa Ana right?
@@scarx9151 I lived on the east side for most of my childhood and I would always hear them and see them in a large group.
From reading the title I was expecting something tragic, but seeing the video was just wholesome to watch. Hoping these parrots will continue to thrive and are saved from extinction.
They also are down in South Texas in the Rio Grande Valley, but it's only the red crowned amazon that is known.
Pretty sure it started from the nursery that burned down in the 1960's in Pasadena. They chose to free almost 50 or so of these parrots to save them from the fire. They've been growing since then.
Umm, not what the experts just said. Why are you changing the story?
@@KOOLBadger I never changed the story. The video never specifies when or how they arrived. The video just talks about WHY these parrots have been able to thrive more easily here than from where they were native. Also because most LA folks that's lived here since the 1960's tell the same story. The place was called Simpson's Garden Town Nursery. Look it up if you don't believe me.
@@mrxxbrian Sorry to tell you but this story is 100% true!!
This is actually correct.. The journalist here failed to do her research
I remember living in Pasadena when I was a child and the parrots would eat the over ripe, fermented, mulberries in our neighbors yard in the summer. They would get super loud and ack like a bunch of little drunkards. I thought it was hilarious as a kid to watch the funny parrots.
I love the parrots more than the people
Me too
My family smuggled some in back in 79, one is still alive, dude sings opera, spanish, english, has a crazy sense of humor, super smart.
I ❤️ Parrots 🦜 ! 😊
You beat me to it! I ❤ them too.
One parrot might drive me crazy, but the sound of hundreds of them is quite pleasing. 😂
I live in Orange County and these guys have made it here as well. I would say a decade ago it was very rare to hear these guys, now it is super common across Costa Mesa, Irvine, and Tustin. These guys are thriving and as a parrot lover it makes me happy.
I live in San Diego and wild parrots have been here for decades. Many decades. We love them.
Yep in Oceanside I used to see them all the time.
I love seeing parrots in the morning, flying overhead while peacocks roam the streets. LA can be a magical place.
😭😭😭😭😭❤❤❤❤❤HOW EXCELLENT! THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY!!
An older documentary that's worth a watch The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill.
*As an LA native, I love it* I have 2 cockatiels at home. I’ve been to *Phoenix* a few times & they have wild “love” parrots there as well 🦜
San Diego had tons of parrots around in Ocean Beach well before I moved there in 2000. The story I heard was that someone let their birds go and that was that. Nice to know that they seem not to be destroying the environment and are thriving. Took some getting used to the squawking at 5am though...
They love the fruit trees near my house and sometimes they take some from my hands they’re very nice if u get them to trust you
How lovely! What kind of fruit if I may ask?
I have finches….like 20 - 30 a day in oak trees. 🌳 they are very vocal, when they arrive. They stay for a while then take off. Love having them around.
So, for those that don’t know, the majority of parrots in the San Fernando valley are because back in the 80’s a film crew accidentally released a bunch of parrots for a movie they were filming at WB studios . They kind of populated form there
Just like film studio left a bunch of bison 🦬 at Catalina Island 😅
These amazons live primarily in the San Gabriel Valley, which is not exactly the "asphalt jungle" that CBS wants you to believe. There are lots of single family homes in the SGV with a variety of edible fruiting trees and palms for the parrots to grow their population. It seems like their population has increased over the years. I don't remember as many ten years ago, but these last few years has been an incredible increase. These birds only create some noise nuisance but they have affectionately become a part of the soundscape of living in the SGV.
I live in the San Fernando valley and have been seeing them here for 20+ years now 🤷🏻♂️
@@frankmurguiaa comment said Warner Bros accidentally released Parrots from a movie shoot in San Fernando. The Parrots from San Gabriel Valley came from a building that was housing parrots and chose to release them
They are also here in East LA and it's pretty much a concrete jungle if you asked me
@@Melapelahs @frankmurguia yes they are all over LA but live PRIMARILY in the SGV. I know because I lived there and have not seen the same numbers in other parts of LA. One truth doesn't negate the other.
They are so cute, especially when they fight with each other. 😂😂
We have a bunch here in South Redondo. They seem to prefer certain streets with magnolia trees. I love them. They sure are noisy though. But they only seem to come around maybe once every week or two.
I’m all for the nose if we can see them so close. So epic
There's quite a few that fly into my yard. I welcome their visit. They're cute! They enjoy my fruit trees.
I use to see them flying around my neighborhood.
I wake up to them every morning outside my window and see them at work. They are all over L.A. and O.C. from small to big flocks. Really cool seeing them thriving:)
We have parrots in Santa Barbara. I was told, someone let their private collection free during one of the big fires, and now they are wild.
Someone mentioned it was in pasadena during the 60s during a fire.
I have visited a few times and I loved at sunset, hearing and seeing the parrots squawking and flying around ❤
Love them ❤ they are such beautiful, compassionate and intelligent animals. Please do not harm them. These species of parrots are endangered in all of Central America as well due to illegal hunting/captivity. I've had over 6 parrots in my lifetime and they've filled my life with joy hearing their trills and squawks ❤
A bunch of them here in Santa Monica … I like the parrots!
I took a video of this lovely birds. Two wild parrots were communicating with pet parrot in my area. At first, I couldn't believe but I have on video.
I remember them in garden grove ca. since I was a little boy in the early 90s almost daily.
When I lived in Long Beach they were there and prevalent . Annoying but as a nature lover I just appreciated them.
Aww east coast and west coast parrots coming together for peace
I see them flying throughout Whittier all the time. Used to own a parrot and a story that i was told from a Bird Store Owner in Uptown Whittier that this birds wher released by a pet store caught on fire in the 60s or 70s. Not sure when exactly. But they been thriving in Southern California since then. Lots of fruit trees and nuts.
These guys are gangsters! No one messes with them when the flock flies in. Even the crows are like "Eff that! I'm leaving!"
Those are parrots that escaped from a pet store that caught on fire! I've been seeing those parrots flying through the city of West Covina for years!!!!!!
There have been flocks of wild parrots in my area for decades. It mostly started here when Bush Gardens shut down and they released their parrots.
The parrots are actually from Busch Gardens. Busch Gardens used to have many many parrots. But when Busch Gardens went out of business, they released all the parrots. They are also in Las Vegas now too.
So cool! Gorgeous
These parrots are so adorable. A huge flock of them would just chill in my backyard. And their little squawks are so cute lol
*EVERYONE wants to live in Los Angeles. Even the Birds*
Parrots are beautiful but oh my goodness, they are super loud lol. There's some in the Buena Park area
I remember seeing them early 2020 with my dad right before he passed away miss you dad.
There is a wild parrot population in San Francisco too.
Yes they are noisy but so cool. They seem to like the Pepper and Magnolia trees in my area. 😊
I love them
They fly through my neighborhood every day, taking a break on the trees at times, as I live in DTLA. For a city, the sounds they make are lovely.
I had a parrot for 10 years. They are beautiful, intelligent, talking, wild birds and good as pets too.
This is so cute! But I’m terrified of birds
They are super social. I'm surprised there's no red tail hawks that are feasting on them. Seems like an easier target than the smaller birds that are more native here that are more elusive.
We have a couple of local hawks, I’ve seen them get mice and pigeons, never seen them go after any of the parrots in the palm trees out front.
I've seen my local hawks hunting them.
Could be the hawks really really don't like how loud the parrots are and the parrots likely fight back together.🦜🦜🦜🦜🦜 Predators would be helpful to keep the numbers in check.
We have these in San Diego
They're lovin life and livin' it up!
Loved the parrots when I lived in Long Beach; wish they'd flock over to Orange County and set up a roost. So dang cute!
Beautiful birds. I see them rest in my backyard trees each summer. Hope their population can increase. All species population need to increase. The world will be better with more parrots than humans.
There are so many of them in West Covina now! They hangout by the trees 🌲 and are so so loud!!
I love these little birds, they’ve been in Long Beach since the 70’s apparently 😁
going to a new place and seeing how different birds are is so insane… like we all grow up with what we think are common birds and then everything switches up. it reminds me of pokemon
Parrots are awesome
I hear them outside as I watch this. Walnut, date palms and other fruit trees attract them at dusk. Sometimes they are so many you can't carry on a conversation. Looks like some yellow headed Amazon's in your footage as well.
Yes those are double yellow head Amazon’s I have one I’ve had for 44 years. Glad they’re thriving in LA since they’re considered endangered in Mexico and Central America. Beautiful birds.
Adore them so much, so happy they’re here!❤
Had tons of them around my Newport home for over 40 years!!!
I'm in south L.A. and a pack of about 40 of these mothers used to live in the tree out back.
This is like a buffet for the hawks, falcons and eagles that frequent Southern California too..
🎶 Been flyin' all my life, living in a parrot paradise 🎶 🦜
I've always heard urban legends about how a flock of some breed of parrots escaped from the bird shows at the fairplex in Pomona.
Wasn't expecting to see all the dead birds.
Someone did the same in Miami Florida; thousands of wild parrots.
Is flock that passes by every morning at 6 am, lol
These parrots have been around the trees in my neighborhood of Lake Forest, CA for a few years now 🙌🏽🦜
Growing up when I would visit my Godfather's house during summers in Pasadena he would have dozens in the back of his property in the trees! They are beautiful 😍 this was over 15 years ago!!!
Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.
Just kidding, but it’s so cool to have them in your backyard! The only downside is that they scream very early in the morning.
We have a ton of them in the Miracle Mile area and love them. We also have a ton of crow families and they all coexist
El Monte has alot of Parrots.
About 20 years ago the roof blew off a pet store that sold exotic birds in Costa Mesa. These are their relatives
I recognize those birds. I still remember it when I was really young when my family and I used to lived in our old apartment. At morning, we heard bird sounds just like the ones from this video. We seen this green birds, I don’t know if it’s the same ones but never forget the sound it’s makes. Then I heard my dad said look down, we saw this really big cage but look small to fit 20 or 25 birds. I don’t know if it’s exactly the numbers but there were many. We watched them until they’re all flew away. To this days, I see and hears the same sound of those birds and I know they’re ok.
They fly from L.A to OC. Have seen the flock several times throughout the last few years
0:41 "This is a red-crowned parrot. It has ceased to be!"
Even the birds prefer Hollywood glamour 😅
It's a solar maximum. They do this everytime there's a solar maximum.
They actually migrated here about 15years ago or more they would leave in winter but one season I noticed they stayed in the giant California black walnut tree that was next door and they thrived there till they cut the tree down then they seem to spread out in the city
People are just finding this out? I’ve lived here all my life and they been here since I can remember. Every morning they fly in flock
0:44 they are very docile, look how he remains quiet while being handled.
love these little guys and gals ❤❤❤ And like most parrots, they're very smart, too. 😊
Edgewater, NJ actually has a colony of Argentinian parrots that somehow escaped from the pet trade and reproduced.
I live in eagle rock and these go back and forth between highland park and here eagle rock since 2020 when I moved in is when I noticed but before I would not notice them anywhere else in L.A.
These guys have been around for years! I left LA in 2005 or 2006 and they were already thriving then.
So main points:
-Two crown parrot species from opposite sides of Mexico
- both endangered
- increasing in numbers in the US
- potentially also making a new species through mixed breeding due to being or descended from pets
On the one hand I'm glad they are bouncing back, on the other hand I don't find it a good idea for a new species to come into the picture
Other birds (e.g. ducks) are going through a problem of mixing with domestic ducks which puts the wild species in jeopardy
I'm seeing the same issue here, going from increasing species population to salvation and then back to decline because they're making a new species instead of breeding with the current species to save themselves
They are here in West Covina and they are so loud!
Sounds like the setup for an Illumination movie.
The yellow-headed ones look like "Mexican double yellow head" parrots, which were very popular in the pet trade. They'd get captured in Mexico, typically when they were young, and sold in the US as pets. Source: We had one as a pet when I was a kid. I wish I could have given that bird a better life.
So loud but I find it nice to wake up to.
I seen them in los angeles for over 20 years
Wow I love parrot, parrot is one of my favorite birds
They have wings and they can migrate over a period of time.
Perico has been getting into the US for decades 😊
