Holy crap you don't need to do all that! There is a way to extract the data from the surface leaving the surface intact and getting the polylines.

You are incorrect for the stated goal of getting the same result as Land Desktop. The issue is the contours won't be broken to prevent overlapping linework with the contour labels. If you don't care about the overlap then you can use the Civil 3D command.
