Civil 3D Surface from a point cloud with point classification, revisited

  • In the past I have discussed creating an Autodesk Civil 3D surface utilizing a scanned point cloud, in LAS format, that contained point classifications. In particular, I talked about using Map 3D to create a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) file, filtering out ground classified points and then using that DEM.
There is an easier way to do this, as was shown to me by one of our customers, and I am sharing this method with you. This method still requires the conversion from LAS to Autodesk ReCap .RCP format, which still honors the classification attributes.
I hope this video is helpful to you, and if you have any questions, please contact us at CADTechnical@seiler-ds.com. Also please visit and subscribe to our blog at www.seiler-ds.... for more tips, tricks and information on Autodesk and other products.
    Have a great day.

Two years later and you still need to do this workaround. Goes to show you how badly Autodesk treats its customers. The fact that their own software (Recap) allows you to classify point cloud data and then in Civil 3D you have to use this workaround instead of having an option to do this using a normal workflow, shows you how Autodesk views its users. Thanks for showing this!

How about the trees and bushes? how do you clean that? if you make point cloud yet not cleaning those, the surface you created may not be accurate

I tried this and it moved my point cloud to a different location.
