Quitting the Peru Divide - am I cheating? | Vancouver to Patagonia ep. 25

  • One of the lowest moments of my journey was when I decided to quit the Peru Divide, a route I had been dreaming of for months.
However, once I changed the narrative I was telling myself, everything felt back into place.
If you’re interested in the Hidden Brain episode I mentioned: Change your Story - Hidden Brain (I cannot recommend it enough!)
Anyway, thanks for watching and I will see you soon! ✨🌸💛

Just saw the notification come through for your new video and after seeing the title, knew I needed to skip ahead and watch. While I'm only just starting your series, I plan on watching each one to use as support and inspiration for my own journey and adventures. What you're describing and experiencing is my biggest concern to following in your footsteps. You've already done such an amazing thing and there are so many people watching, following, and becoming inspired by what you've embarked upon and already accomplished to date. You're supported regardless of decision, but know that despite you being physically alone, there are thousands of people cheering you. For every like and comment you see, there are 50... 100... 1000x more who remain silent yet supportive. I don't comment on anything ever, so 99.9999999999999% I am that silent supporter. There are countless people just like me watching awestruck. Stay strong, amazing job!!

I am 78 now and watching this episode of your adventure brings me back to my own experiences long ago solo kayaking down the Mackenzie River in NWT. It is an emotional journey and a physical one. It will nourish you a lifetime. Thank you for sharing your honesty and intrepidness.

This is the first time I’ve felt compelled to comment even though I have followed your journey since Vancouver. As a fellow long distance solo bicycle traveler, I can easily identify with what you have experienced during your incredible travels. Yet I am overwhelmed and amazed at what you have accomplished and will continue to be so for whatever the remainder of your journey holds.
You are not quitting nor are you cheating. You are adjusting to the situation which is what any experienced, competent bicycle traveler must do. Bicycle travel is to do what you must do, even if that means making difficult decisions along the way. Bicycle travel is not about a route nor a destination. It is about what lay between the start and finish. The destination is the journey itself and its experiences, not a spot on Earth where you end up when it is over.
Should your adventure end today it is not a failure. Your journey has carried you to amazing places most people will never see even in picture books. You have encountered people who will always remain in your heart. You have learned to rely on yourself when times are difficult and to appreciate the good times. You have learned to welcome simplicity in a world of complexity. You have experienced life in a way that will shape you forever. The only failure would be to not start the journey.

Wow....redbagsrambler nailed it. I think it's really wonderful that you had the awareness to realize what you needed, when you needed it and to make it happen. This isn't a contest to cover X amount of KM via a bicycle. It's an inner and outer journey, adventure, that you wanted to take. And that's exactly what you're doing. Virtual pat on the back :)
Loving your cinematic videos, narration, introspection and willingness to be vulnerable, open and honest.

    💫💫
So many people follow your steps and I am sure most of us (your followers), totally ADMIRE what you have accomplished at your age!!
You are the protagonist, The Main Character of this beautiful journey you share with us... Again, even your strength is "at another level"!
Enjoy the awesome views, the different cultures, the air and at those heights 'the lack of air' 😂
Enjoy every step of the route and when you need to, I hope your eyes will fill with tears of happiness and very few from loneliness!
    Abrazos!

OMG you had me on the edge of my seat for most of this one!
I think it was the 17 century English poet John Dunne that said "No Man is An Island". I guess if he was alive today he say something more PC like: No one is self-sufficient; everyone relies on others. My son has Asperger's Syndrome and generally speaking is very self contained, but a couple of times each month he plants himself down beside my wife, daughter or me for a conversation. We all need human contact from time to time, there is nothing wrong with admitting that.
There is a very fine line between testing your limits and doing something stupid which will impact your health or well being. Looks like you found that line and made the mature decision not to cross it. That is an achievement and not a disaster.
So sail on (or rather cycle on) Carla in the knowledge that your achievements are very impressive and will trump any minor disasters are errors of judgments you make along the way.

    Carla,
You are fantastic, have no anxiety about taking a break and spending time away from the bike. You could probably have benefitted from leaving your bike with your friend and flying home for three months. What you do is exhausting, physically challenging and mentally draining and all without a support network in place. So no, I don't think you gave up. I don't think any less of you. In fact I respect you far more for having the courage to recognise your position and needs and to act accordingly. Well done you and please post more when you feel in a good place. Mean while.... Peace and Love!

Self-awareness is a very important trait. Failure would have been to rationalize to the point where you get yourself into real trouble. Recognizing when something isn't working for you, and to return to the joy of what you are doing and why you are there, might be difficult at the time but it is so important. Brava for taking action. Keep going on the journey that you want to take. Thank you for this latest video. 🙌🙌🙌

I left my house one morning planning to ride across Canada then fly to Japan and ride around there. 3 days was all I lasted. The entire time all I could think about was Japan and how spending 3 months riding across my home country that I've already seen several times was an obstacle. I finally admitted to myself I just wanted to go to Japan so I turned around and went home and bought a plane ticket. Bought a bike in Tokyo and did my Japan tour. Nothing wrong with changing plans, it's your journey, you get to decide how to take it.

You have been honest about your emotions and that makes the videos so special. I hope you'll one day understand the physical and mental strengh you have. I'll always think about you as a winner. I can understand how hard it was to make the decision to take the bus, but at the same time I know it was the wisest ever! This is YOUR journey, you are the boss of your journey 😊 I am very glad you are happy with your choice, was super pleased that a friend was waiting for you in Cuzco. I was in Manchu Pichu myself in 2006 and the top was very crowded, a bit disappointed because of the crowds. It is supposed to be a sacred space… I hope you managed lots of rest for your body and soul, great visit with your friends, and winds in your tail, whatever route you may want to pursue. Sending hugs, Carla!

Blessings and good luck going forward
Update: the bottom rack mounts are both toast now the rack is held on by galvanized steel wire, heat exhaustion psychosis in El Salvador... I took Public Transit and subsidized rail from Vancouver to SanDiego in November. #MountCurrieToTheMexicanBorder. The Oregon bus driver lady told me about you. Like you, I had an A-B direction, but I had multiple options. I also made rules before the trip began. If your idea was to bike the entire route (no bus, car, train, planes) and you chose to train a part of it, then yes - you cheated. You’re not Lance Armstrong or Barry Bonds: no one is competing with you. It’s okay, you can still say you biked from Vancouver to Argentina. However, when saying so it would be honourable to mention that you took a train to help you during a difficult stretch.
Our own rules are made by no one but ourselves. Sharing them allows others to measure the rulers success by objectively looking at how long they last and are adhered to.

I ride for fun so I don't blame you, once the fun stops I stop. That's why I don't think I would attempt bikepacking in the winter.

In the last several videos you have complained about loneliness and monotony. Why didn't you arrange with other people on the cycling-the-Americas Whatsapp group to ride together? There are so many cyclists on the Peruvian Divide, if you can just be flexible with your schedule. When I cycled that route, it was very social.

Tied front legs. Sign of "ownership" by someone. They do this with camels, here in the Gulf.
