Winston-Salem Secrets: Oral Health Talk, Local Eats & Creative Crafts!

There is so much more to taking care of our teeth and gums than just having a beautiful smile. Did you know that our mouths are the primary entry point for infections and other dangerous organisms? Some chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease are also associated with oral health problems such as tooth loss and periodontitis, an infection of the gums. Attendees of April’s AgingWell will hear from Mashica Jefferson Tobias, BSDH, RDH, CDHC, Public Health Dental Hygienist with the Forsyth County Department of Public Health on what we can, and should, be doing to protect our teeth and gums which in turn will help keep our bodies healthy!

In Winston-Salem we are fortunate to have a wealth of organizations and resources just for older adults- all with the shared mission of providing opportunities for meaningful and fun activities. One such organization is the Shepherd’s Center of Greater Winston-Salem where you will find programs that range from beginner’s bridge, to crocheting, to jewelry making to the newest offering- wet felting. Kristin Larson, Director of the Vital Living Program introduces us to Karen Mclaughlin, an expert in the craft of wet felting. Karen will take us step-by-step through the process and along with student Monica Winter will demonstrate how to create a stunning scarf using unspun wool and silk.
