I think I was 14 years old when I was turned on to Crime of the Century by my best friends older brother. Went out and bought the album and when I got my driver's license I had to buy the 8-track so I could listen to it in my beater Chevy. What a phenomenal album.
Probably because he did so much else in the band.and of course the band themselves were great and the guitar was one of its textures.missing a lot these days, texture.
Supertramp from this era has held up very well in the time between then and now. And yes, they were not considered the best at the time. But they had some very good songs, memorable lyrics, interesting compositions that usually were multipart with big shifts, such as this one above. I rank them a lot higher in 2023 than I did in 1978-79.

Always loved that intro. The keys and then the break and it goes into the guitar with the wah-wah, brilliant. More music in the first minute and a half than some complete songs today.
I really used to love it when, on the radio late 1970s (or later), that great intro would come on. I knew the great song was on the air, that intro is all anticipation.
The X-Ray effect goes on far too long (feels like MS figured out how to do it and wanted to show off a bit), but this is still one of the best live performances of this song that I've seen. Arrangements are spot on. Thanks!
Used to have a pair of Radio Shack stereo headphones, with antennae sticking up either side, (kinda alien looking) would go out at lunch and get fiercely high. First hour after lunch was study hall, and I would get LOST in this song!
One full year in high school I had study hall after lunch. At lunch we could walk from school to a few businesses in town. We usually went to the pool hall. Plenty of places to fire up including behind the pool hall. Our time at lunch would occasionally last through two periods depending upon which teacher monitored study hall.😊

Normally, a band will either: Use the original album version completely and mime, use an alternate take and mime, use the instrumental and sing live over it, or on the rare occasion, play and sing live. What Supertramp is doing here on this is they are using the original album version with the original verses but, singing the choruses live. The choruses could be alt takes but i'm pretty sure they are just singing them live. Either way, I've never seen/heard a band do that.
I think that this is some form of a hybrid version of the song, some parts seem different from the studio recording, Rick's vocals are slightly different and John's sax parts are different. This is certainly different from an actual live performance of the song that in my view lost its grit when played live. The version on the Paris album and later recordings fall into that realm. They kept this version shorter and tighter.

I know about the video effects,, but there is damage at the beginning with the visible scan lines, and glitching around the edges. The visual effects was a common thing back then, not the little white lines that are partially visible. Those appear during some tape being stuck (and he reason for baking the tapes)
the colorization effect at the verse was so utterly cheap - but totally blew my mind! We've got 50 years of innovation and there is still no replacement for creativity. Love this band and this song!

I don't think the Live '88 and It Was the Best Of Times versions aren't gritty. The latter in particular has a LOT of heft, right from the first note.
