  • Hook - Hanak H333 BL #10
    Thread - UTC 140 D (Yellow)
Rib - Magic Quills size M
    Wing - Natural CDC
Thorax - I have used a custom blend from Get Slotted, any light yellow or light hare dub will work well.
Relatively easy fly to tie, getting proportions correct is the key to turning out really nice versions of this pattern. The Yellow Owl is a very popular fly and takes its fair share of fish. This is a play on that pattern using some Magic Quills. I really like the way the quills pop when a thin layer of UV resin is applied.
As always would love to hear your thoughts on the pattern, leave me a comment below and I will do my best to answer. All the best Lindsay!

To save weight on the hook i use a permanent marker and when tying this fly i leave the rats tail on and colour it black for the rib. Saves weight and you can use Sharpies new colours they have out. Silver, gold, bronze. Great video fella 👍

I have done this the only problem is it can be too light. If you use a very thin wire it help the fly to sit properly as soon as it hits the water.

Great pattern pal if out of magic quill? Either rib with fine black or dark brown thread then a light coat of resin/ varnish. Or when winding along the body at the thorax position also tie in a length of fine fluorocarbon along to the rear of the dressing. Then wind the Fluor in tightly touching wraps to the thorax point. Making the extra resin an option. With the slight weight and the neat zero refractive index of the rib. It will both be translucent and protected.

Nice one Lindsay!! Need to try one when I get back home, I don't mind stacking the CDC because then I'll know that it's lined up and there's enough feathers to float the fly.
    Great tutorial!!
    Keep em coming

Nice tie Lindsay, 6 plumes of cdc, has it got to be 6, would 4 plumes hold the fly up?

Sorry to hear that pal, I fear I am not far behind you! Dave Downie and Davie McPhail both tie small batches commercially but are always very busy. I am sure that there will be others in the area that will be able to tie these flies. They are pretty simple to tie.
