My favorite M-5 was the was the E38 (2000 to 2003). That car may be the best sedan I have ever been in. A friend of mine had one. It would snatch 3rd gear hard. like most cars hit 2nd. The steering the brakes and even the ride was wonderful. I dont even think I will drive the new one. Going to a turbo so sad for BMW m fans.
great car but theres already recalls on the feul pump along with the m6. the e60 m5 is the by far my favorite m5.
The old M5 will NEVER NEVER outperform the new M5.
I currently have two cars in mind to purchase. Cadillac CTS or BMW X535i. you see my budget is no more than 65K and also i have researched both. I also have test droved both and i think the BMW is better. do you guys believe i should rethink or should i just go with the BMW? .
its not joke dude !!
I just watched the track video of the old M5, which according to the presenter is supposed to be more nimble and yet, it averaged the EXACT SAME slalom speed.
MANUAL .. HELL YES !!!
I think MotorTrend didn't have the manual trans. Kinda makes a huge difference apparently.
In 3 minutes I learned this. The 335i is 3593lbs the isf is 3430-3500. Regardless at least 100lbs lighter. The isf has 423hp 373lb ft of torque. 335i has 302hp 295lb feet. Now that means the 335 has 11.9hp per lb, 12.18lb ft per hp. Now a jp4 has 9.58lb per hp and about the same for torque (cant find exact numbers) the isf is 8.53hp per lb and 9.19lb ft per pound. So consider it has a better power to hp ratio and about the same torque. Considering turbo lag, it wouldent have a chance.
I can tell you that a CTS-V would walk both though... ;)
Congrats BMW, you managed to make your 2013 M5 slower in every category than the 5 year old Cadillac CTS-V
Way to go!
The DCT version is actually only a paltry 2 tenths quicker @ 4.3 0-60... And 12.4@116 1/4...the annual is 95lbs lighter, that will make a difference, however small.
The old V10 needs to rev upto 7600rpm to get horsepower, the new TT V8 just somewhere around 5600rpm to get max horsepowe and max tq at just 1500rpm.
it is with the manual though, most are with the DSG
You must have never heard it in real life. The ''farts'' don't sound like farts at all and sound more like crippling explosions which is actually pleasing. The new M5 doesn't sound as good as the old M5, but it still sounds good.
Why can't you realize that THIS IS NOT THE DOUBLE CLUTCH VERSION everyone tested before? It is the manual-version, without Launch Control... 4,5 s from an RWD, heavy-weight sportsaloon is pretty impressive.
Still think BMW should utilize their I6 prowess with the M3 and M5, but glad they've still maintained the gated gearbox.
im confuse this gotta be a lie...someone plz help me i have a e60m5 my fav model over this...now its said my model does 0-60 in4.7 and quarter 12.6 or 12.7.....now if this is doing 4.5 and 12.5....whats the point..any feedback plz
For one, it is 4.3 seconds with the typical 1-foot roll out and also there is no such thing as a bad driver when the car comes with launch control system and it shifts by itself when the launch control system is engaged (learn a thing or two about the BMW M-DCT transmission).
i just been told by my dealer that i can't drive my M5 now. some kind of problem, and need to be fix for up to 3 weeks.
Mike Conticello is his pre CR days!
Love this car! :D
What EXACTLY is rollout?
Weather, humidity, and elevation can yield a different number than some super low figure the factory puts out. go and try to get those numbers in denver, for example
Maybe BMW will do a lightened, sportier version of the M5 like they did with the M3 CRT.
I think this can be attributed to the manual gearbox.
it means they let the car roll 1 foot and then start counting the time... this is because with this sort of power cars leaving from a stand still tend to have difficulty finding traction... letting them roll a few feet allows the tires to find that traction and produce better more accurate numbers
The funny thing is here in Germany/Europe you can only get the DCT transmission in the M5. You can't buy the manual. Very strange.
audi s4 has done a 0-60 in 4.4 with 330hp, wish these cars could shed some pounds they would be very fast.
Actually the difference between the best DCT-time with roullout (3,7 s) and this rollout-time (4,3 s) is only 0,6 sec and that's no big difference, considering the "manual" launch and the slower 1-2 shift.
(DCT/Launch Control 0-100 km/h times are varying between 4,0 and 4,5 s as well, according to European magazines - depending on road surface)
can someone plz explain whats a 1 foot roll out ???!?!?!?!
Do you guys test bikes?
yes i would choose the new coupe caddi over this...i just dont like the look the fact its twin turbo..the lack of manual selection like the old one...i have the e60 m5 so im satisfied..im still stock and raced a shelby gt500 and slowly pulled away from it near the low 100mph and he was bolt on
okay so how come carlos laga of motor trend pulled a 3.7 sec time to 60?
No, it is nothing if we consider the more careful launch and the slower manual shiftings.
I remember when 5 Second quarter mile times were outrageous and when a Porsche Turbo went faster than that it was like in the early days of cars when 60 miles per hour was thought impossible because your body could not handle it. Now there are Impreza's which could blow away my Hemi Coronet and practically any muscle car from the 60's, but I hear people making like any 4 second run is somehow not so good. I wonder how many people have done a 4 second run.
@JELH Wrong. Insideline isnt paid to make manufacturers claimed performance true, so they put up ACTUAL acceleration times, etc.
was the launch control even used? so much tire squeel unlike motortrend where they got 0-60 at 3.7s =|
Nice, i find this test a little misleading. People have run in the 11s in the 1/4 mile with the M5 and it is possible for it to do 0-60 in under 4 seconds.
5-series with a 6 liter V12?
you forgot about VALUE and price of replacement parts and repairs.
i trust insideline's 0-60mph time over motortrend, road and tract, etc...
If you go back through their tests, the 2012 Charger SRT8 ran identical numbers. Ouch....
Believe me, you're seeing the last of the 4300+ pound E-segment V8 RWD's. This M5, The E-class etc. The next generations of these will all be losing big weight, new Caddy CTS is only 3600lbs for example (same size as the 5 series). The true muscle cars from era 2.0 will be when these all lose 500~lbs while keeping their 560+ horsepower engines. Stay tuned!
what would jeremy clarkson say if he was reviewing this car?
what do i do with my hands?
The more and more I see reviews of this car, the more and more I think it is a skip it and I think a lot of people are going to do that. I am going to check one out tomorrow see how it is.
ITS FAST MAN
The new M5 is cheaper than a new SL5500. I drove both and the M5 is like, wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better. It's weird. If you are looking at $100k cars, forget tesla. M5 is real race car performance. Every gear shift registers instantaneously. It's not like other cars where you shift but it says the number but it didn't really shift yet. This car shifts everything you press so if you up shift 4 times by accident you feel all the 4 gear shifts quick. I drove the X6M too and it's the same just slower after say 2nd gear but you get SUV form and AWD.
Totally agreed, I would love to own the new GS-F Sport. Lexus is coming back to attack BMW, maybe not as refined yet but give lexus a few years to tweak a few things and get some drive feedback and we will get left in the dust.
LFA=fastest car around the nurburgring
FT-86=probably one of the best handling cars for the money in the world
IS-F=not ground breaking but definitely a great car
Not to mention toyota is working on a GS-F, a next gen supra and Lexus is the best selling luxury brand out their.
Was this test before or after the Recall ? (Troll Face) :)
Oh he had dct right?
This thing puts down the same numbers on the skidpad as the Ford Focus ST.
lol correction "we will see who gets left in the dust". I meant to say. I knew you all would be trolling mad on this.
@L4TIn0St4NdUp yea he got 4.3 seconds 0-60 and I think like a 12.3-12.4 1/4 mile in the manual m5
What about the Toyota FT-86
offset the heaviness with MORE POWER!!!
so little you know, youre missing excluding the bmw as an option.....its the best sports limo outhere.....
Than you need better brakes cooling. Upgrade the Diff. Add more rear ballast. You have even a fatter M5. How about less weight and a good N/A power plant.
cool
Insideline CLEARLY cannot drive if they got 4.5sec on 0 to 60 and 12.5, motortrend got 3.7 seconds and 11.9 plz message me why this is
The 86 was the work of one man ( 40 something year old Akio Toyota CEO)Toyota corporate fought him the whole way. So much so he went to Subaru to have it built. For the most part Toyota builds cars by committee. They have a reputation of building the most reliable cars on the planet though. Look how they screwed up the Scion XB.
I'd probably take a CTS-V 6 speed manual over this M5 which is something I thought I'd never say. Obviously driving is believing but I feel the CTS V will be more of a drivers car due to the less intrusive computer systems and reliable "old" American technology. The M5 might run better numbers in some aspects and be a tech marvel but overall feel is important as well.
and even the tesla model s, given that is very fast also!!
These times are as close to the real ones as they get. On an average, slightly wet road that car won't get to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds.
I don't mind the language. No biggie. The IS-F isn't that fast. 335i is a bit slower, but with a tune, my money would still go on the 335i. Anyhow, what the 'Ring times of both cars?
Can't say I have, but I have ridden shotgun quite a few times. Not really that impressive. I have driven a ZR1, Z06, F430, 458, Enzo, California, Murcielago, Gallardo, and Reventon. I can comfortably say that all of those cars are better than the LF-A. Including the Z06 Corvette, which would be the one to get my money out of all of those cars.
I'll take the Tesla Model Performance. It's just as fast on on 144 less hp, far more efficient, looks better, has much more cargo space, needs less maintenance, can charge up for free in one hour using Tesla's newly unveiled superchargers, has a massive sunroof, touchscreen, and three seats in the back, plus two possibles in the trunk.
This is an amazing car no doubt. I've driven a 550i and 328i with M-sport package. Those are amazing too, but they use the infernal combustion engine.
the sound of those new turbo charged M engines is rather disappointing, this new gen M5 (as well as the M6 also) looks much better than the previous one/s IMO, but the previous gen. Ms just had more character to them. the M5 basically was the originator of the segment of hig performance saloons and used to be the king of the mountain with no threat in sight, times have clearly changed now, nowadays even Cadillac has something to battle it.
Carlos mayo got 3.7 second 0-60 and an 11.9 second quarter mile doooooone
Sorry Chris, Can in at the tail end of the conversation.
see I don't understand why people alawys change the supject when they get proved wrong. Were talking about 335i's and isf's. The fact of the matter is that a isf (especially the new ones) walk on chipped 335i's on the freeway. And with the lack of hp it makes its not fast at slow speeds like the high hp isf. Its simple physics...
Well, there goes civility...
Anyhow, chipped 335i's are no joke at all. For that matter, the N54 ones are flat out NASTY when it comes to them being tuned. They pull like freight trains after 1,500 RPM's. Anyway, My money would be on a 335i with the N54 with a tune against a stock IS-F.
Regardless, throw in twisties, and the Lexus is done for, stock or not stock.
im skeptical of motortrend tho
I do 3.8 in the m5 , they dont launch the car properly
Thewolf1970 its cause they had a manual, motor trend tested the dct in 3.7 sec
I could get this EXACT SAME PERFORMANCE with a 2012 SRT8 and a switch to summer performance tires. My supercharged SRT8 300c can do the straight line numbers, but can't handle as well. thing is, When's the last time you ever raced someone around a track??? My job is to destroy you off a stoplight and that's a job I do pretty damn well.
o i see , thanks
why does this v8 sound more like a sports bike?
M5 is good, and that's coming from someone who hasn't been a fan of BMW.
youre nuts. .6 seconds difference in 0-60 is very significant. 1/2 second in the 1/4 mile is as well.
It would've got more interesting if the oil pump failed during the test.
Its also a two seat sports car not a sedan.
totally agree with Lexus not being even close to BMW...even the LFA, it's a shitty car for the price
but CTS-V maybe?! at least based on edmunds, it's faster in straight line and very close in track times!
This new M5 will NEVER EVER sound as good as the V10 M5
better watch your oil pressure with one of these !
Because I live where it snows I would go with the Audi. AWD matters.
"I'm not sure what to do with my hands..."
Oh I see... Didn't notice it was the manual. But regardless of that, IL still get the shittiest times out there.
BMW has issued a recall of these due to oil starvation worries. Best not do anymore testing edmunds!
None of this matters - the e39 M5 is still THE M5.
BMW is a whole different animal than Lexus. The folks that drive Lexus dont like the firm ride of the BMW. Most BMW owners dislike the taffy fill of the Lexus.
That much wheel hop in such an advanced car is embarrassing.
errrrr...I think you will find that the tires were fried!
every bits of this car is beautiful except that exhaust sound how a v8 can sound like this
Maybe you should drive a LF-A first.
Maybe, just maybe
exactly, they don't offer an M% competitor, that does not mean they are not able to. it all has to do with who will buy it. Americans won't buy it, they will say it's too expensive. they would buy the BMW how ever, because Americans are hard wired to like anything European.
guy is the manual gearbox
with the DSG will be faster
its insideLAME...everyone else has was better numbers 3.7 to 60 and under 12 in the quarter
