Kids In Prison Then & Now - 13 Years Later, What Happened To These Boys? Akheem & Paul's Stories

  • In this video we look back at interviews with young prisoners Akheem and Paul as they talked to us about what it was really like being locked up as teens. Each teen talked about how they landed behind bars, their regrets, their hopes and what they felt they learned inside prison walls. We also hear from Paul's attorney, Monica Foster, and get an exclusive glimpse inside an Appellate Court hearing as Monica fights for Paul's release.
    Catch the rest of Paul's story here:
    • Video
    • Supervising 12-Year Ol...
    More on Paul’s story: In this interview, Paul Gingerich had already spent two years in juvenile prison as he was serving a 25 year sentence for conspiracy to commit murder. Paul was 12 years old at the time of his crime. In this interview, Paul talked about what his experience was like in the county jail while being held there during his trial, and what the process was like being interrogated by police. He also discussed what he wanted for his future someday.
    Update: Paul appealed his sentence, and the case went to the Indiana Supreme Court. The court threw out his adult conviction and remanded the case back to the juvenile courts for re-sentencing. He received a sentence modification in 2016 and was released from prison in 2017 after spending seven years behind bars. He was 19 years old at the time of his release. Paul's case inspired child advocates and juvenile justice activists to lobby for change in Indiana's juvenile sentencing guidelines, with the hope that juvenile judges would be able to maintain jurisdiction over some juvenile cases rather than automatically waiving kids to adult court. Their efforts resulted in a new law dubbed "Paul's Law," which gave Indiana courts greater flexibility in deciding juvenile sentences. This law is sometimes called a "Blended Sentencing" law in states around the U.S.

    From Ahkeem’s family:
    Thank you for sharing this documentary. I would love to see the next documentary because sadly yes he is in prison. If I may request the team to send his sisters a copy first it would be greatly appreciated. This video was initially very triggering and upsetting to me personally. But I do appreciate it now and can see how it can be a way to advocate for him.
    To my knowledge, he has 65 years for murder. Yes so sadly and unfortunately a woman lost her life behind my brother actions. If I may add more context, NOT AN EXCUSE. And believe me, I hold him 100% accountable regardless of our upbringing. His actions were due to his paranoid and mental illness. Ahkeem has a twin brother (who at the same time began having a mental break as well) right before my eyes. But that’s a different traumatic story. He did not kill her because she was going to turn him in. In a paranoid state he struck her once, which led to her death. Ahkeem is a big guy and the woman had a brain condition. Ahkeem should not be charged with murder, but manslaughter or murder 2 maybe but not murder. This was an accident. He did not fool anyone, he actually is a good person, not a “murderer.” If he was a sociopath (antisocial personality disorder) I’d say that, even him being my brother. Or maybe I’d say nothing, but that’s not the case. Ahkeem and I have talked for hours about how he thinks of the woman and her family daily. Prior to the incident that led to her death he walked her dog for her, helped her with her groceries because she was an elderly woman and sick.
    When a loved one is incarcerated it deeply impacts the entire family. This is another trauma for us too.
    Also unfortunately unlike Paul (in the video) Ahkeem does not have the resources to plead his case. He has used a lot of his time appealing the case but I believe he has lost hope at this point. He used to communicate with us weekly but hasn’t reached out in the past few months. I was happy to read in the comments that the interviewer talked to him recently because we haven’t.
    There’s always more to the story. But I feel these details are appropriate. Thank you immensely to all who shared kind words and prayers. We really need and appreciate it ❤ THANK YOU

      To Akheem’s family member: thank you so very much for your post. We would love to get in direct contact with you. Can you please email us via our “contact” link on our website (www.calamariproductions.com)? We are grateful for the time you took to explain more about Akheem’s story. We have kept in touch with him and know how difficult things have been and the mental struggles involved. Cases like his are very, very complex and we believe your words are important for people to see.
      To our viewers: we try very hard on this channel to keep comments civil. We hope you can understand the pain involved for ALL family members-those of the victim and yes, those who are family to young people like Akheem. It’s only through intense discussion and understanding of all sides and issues that we can hopefully help prevent tragedies like this from happening again. We are mindful of the pain experienced by all, which is why we think stories like this are important for people to see. Thank you for your understanding.

      As a black man and father of 16 and 13 year old sons, there is nothing more important than a father figure. From the 12 - 16 year range, I have had to guide them in the right direction hundreds of times and can see how they could have easily went with the wrong crowd or made many bad decisions without me including how they respect adults, strangers, family members, peers, teachers, and their education. Their mother, and my wife are together yet she would not have had the success we have had thus far. Black boys need their fathers. You can see how Akheem tries to impress the wrong people. This is one of his major issues.

Everyone in his life is about money and they want it quick and easy instead of having to work hard by getting an education (late night and long hours studying) or, just hard work at a low pay before making more money as the payoff. This is why we have so many "aspiring rappers" in our community who eventually commit crime before "making it" big.

    Re Ahkeem's story, what are these young kids really going home to??? Burglary and assault sounds like he was desparate for money and doing what he knows best. Are the connected with any job training assistance, help with job placement that pays enough to afford to live...??? It's much deeper than just releasing these young men back into the world.

    • @CalamariProductions
      @CalamariProductions  9 месяцев назад +21

      @diari1978 - You ask very important and valid questions. Research proves that the brain forms differently when exposed to violence, abuse, etc. at a very early age. And for boys, the brain isn't fully formed until well into the 20s. While these things aren't excuses for bad behavior, they are precursors to in in many instances, and it gives us a window into how and why things often happen as they do. Kids re-entering society after time behind bars is a very hot topic. So much depends on what programs and educational services are offered in these facilities, how much families play a role while the kids are incarcerated (some facilities work hard at incorporating family involvement in their programs; others, not at all). This is a long way of saying it can often be a crap shoot on how a kid does once released. If they go back to the same violent environment that got them in trouble in the first place and continue to hang around bad influences, it can be extremely difficult to stay on the right track. That said, we DO see kids make it, and maturity helps. We always hope for the best! Thank you for your questions!

Akheem fell back into alcohol and drugs and all the things that originally got him in trouble in the first place. We recently did a long prison phone interview with him and he hasn't done well--been in Seg numerous times and says his mental health is deteriorating rapidly. He expresses extreme remorse for what happened, but sadly, that doesn't bring his victim back or change anyone's circumstances. It's a sad case all the way around. Thank you for watching and commenting.

    I've watched quite a few of these interviews and hope for a success story at the end. I see an eagerness to go out into the world and do good things in almost everyone. I am saddened to see that very few of these kids manage to accomplish their goals. It causes me to wonder why. Is it the system and their failure to rehabilitate them, or are these kids too hardcore to rehabilitate? This boy seemed to have it going on, good looks, good attitude, was prepared, earned his GED, and had a support system. What more did he need?? I sure as heck don't know, but it's sad.

    • @CalamariProductions
      @CalamariProductions  7 месяцев назад +6

      @kayja2949 - all very good points. We wish we had the answers. After 25 years doing this work we have some general thoughts, but none of them are concrete answers to how we ultimately stop the cycle. Many of the kids have early childhood trauma that usually goes untreated. We then get asked the question, "well, why do some kids with horrible childhood trauma do just fine as adults and others don't?" Again, we don't have the answers, but what we do see is that those who make usually have at least ONE caring adult (a teacher, a mentor, a neighbor, etc) who goes the extra mile to help them see a better future. Without hope and opportunity, many kids feel completely lost. It's not an excuse for committing crimes, but it does give us a window into how they often end up where they do. Again, thank you for watching and posting such poignant comments.

      @@CalamariProductionsI did 10 years straight. Been home a little over 8 years now. Just got off parole this past September 6th 2023. I spent ALL of my 20s incarcerated.
      I don’t think there is any set reason people don’t change, or they do change but still end up messing up and coming back. There is countless reasons and circumstances. Hell, people that come from great families and nice communities with no childhood trauma also get locked up at a young age and do a long stretch and somehow still find their way back to prison. It’s so sad to see. Because all of them want to get out and do good. All of them have dreams and goals and spent years daydreaming about how they want their life to be when they go home. Literally spend hundreds of hours laying in their bunk daydreaming of life outside and what they want their future to look like only to get out and ruin it. It’s sad.
      I don’t know what makes me different from others. Why I choose to change my life and keep it that way but others didn’t. It’s sad man. Because no matter how “hard” or “tough” they seem, deep down they are humans that wanted a better life for themselves. They wanted to make their mom proud after putting her through so much before being locked up the first time. I promise you, they really really wanted these things. But something inside them wouldn’t allow it.

Add in mental health issues such as the ones Akheem has been dealing with all his life and it's a sad, tragic mix. It is always our hope that our videos help shine a light on so many issues that lead to juvenile crime. I look at these babies and cannot believe they are not a priority for us to be creating and actively involved with a different system if it's allegedly not working, but is it not working or the people paid to work in the system not working??? I know the answer personally do u , or u just get to decide what we need??? 😮😔😎

      What do you do about it? You say you can’t believe it, but what do you do? Do you do anything to change it besides RUclips commenting about how ‘you know the answer’ and saying ‘I can’t believe it’s not our main priority’ well clearly it isn’t your priority, if it is, what’s one thing you do or have done about it? Country is full of people like you. You’ve done and will do nothing about it, you just act like you care and cry in the comments. When you exit the video you go on about your day like nothing happened. Priority? You can’t believe it? Believe it. Look at your life

      @eastonclark thank u for asking, I actually do my very best to make sure I am a humane human no matter how I'm treated in turn. I work everyday, in spite of brain injury, I still consciously work daily to love more, and to love who's in front of me rn and who has needs I can help with I do. I'm pretty certain there was a time they called that humanity and they did give anyone a prize for it and nor did people expect to be rewarded as They seem to now expect to be recognized for their humane actions for others. I do infact have an idea and concept I know doubtlessly is worth at the least trying it, it has to be better then nothing because I've known 3 people who were sentaced as adults, did a decade in the adult penitentiary, and got out to have 0% anything or one who was worthy to be guiding any of them, and I'm sorrowful to say there is 1 who survived past a year because he went back to prison in 6 days, one shot himself, the other got in a stand off with the cops who shot him 4 times before he shot himself, but he was free and he decided right? However if we have men who have been civilians, and have skills, who struggle acclimating back to society, how come we can't give them a purpose in teaching men how to be men except for who've never even seen what that truly looks like? What's to be lost if it failed? Or what's the point of being able to intervene in these kids lives and not changing their direction? I have many children related and otherwise, and despite the fact I rarely see the point in defending my position however I do truly have a remarkable concept and based on the intolerances and experiences I've survived with I'll never not be a useful means to hope at least for a resolution for anything, especially when I'm not familiar with it or the difficulties someone else is surviving. I'm also not a rich person and currently on bed rest hence the abundance of time wasted in attempting to explain what's already been decided on by yourself! Be safe, and I hope u never experience such things or have to go without being able to decide for yourself!

      @eastonclark they label them the "cracks" in the system every single day, or everytime they don't want to be responsible for what they're failing to get done!

      @eastonclark I actually agree, our country, our world, is full of who you're disappointed I'm not or you'd have anything to say in turn. I had answer for u, however I'd like to know what u based your assumptions about myself not proactively involved or doing my part, what are u doing? For the record why isn't an answerable question. It's too broad for the human mind to comprehend because it goes on forever so obviously you're interest is critical and not resolutions!
