    Second generation (1958-1960)
For 1960, the Thunderbird was given another new grille and other minor styling changes along with a newly optional manually operated sunroof for hardtop models. Dual-unit round taillights from 1958 to 1959 were changed to triple-units after the fashion of the Chevrolet Impala. Sales increased again with 92,843 sold for 1960.
Although the 1955-57 Thunderbird was a success, Ford executives-particularly Robert McNamara-were concerned that the car's position as a two-seater limited its sales potential. As a result, the car was redesigned as a four-seater for 1958.
The new Thunderbird began a sales momentum previously unseen with the car, selling 200,000 units in three years, four times the result of the two-seat model. This success spawned a new market segment, the personal luxury car. It was the first individual model line (as opposed to an entire company) to earn Motor Trend "Car of the Year" honors.
It was offered in both hardtop and convertible body styles, although the latter was not introduced until June 1958, five months after the release of the hardtop. The new Thunderbird was considerably larger than the previous generation, with a longer 113.0 in (2,870 mm) wheelbase to accommodate the new back seat. The increased size also increased the car's weight by 800 lb (363 kg). Along with a new, more rigid unibody construction was new styling, including quad headlights, more prominent tailfins, a bolder chrome grille, and a larger, though nonfunctional, hood scoop. Powering the Thunderbird was a new, 300 hp (224 kW) 352 cu in (5.8 L) FE V8, available with a three-speed manual or automatic transmissions.
In the 1958 model year in which the car was introduced, sales were 37,892 units, outselling the previous model year's 16,000 units.

My '60 T-Bird was Diamond Blue. Man's wife placed an ad in a Penny Saver for her mom's car under "1960 Ford". I called. He informed me she forgot to include Thunderbird.
I'm more of a 60's car man, but something about it fascinated me when I saw it. Tired but clean w/AC in addition to other expected options, did it.
The only car I've totally restored. There is an illustration by Bill Boyer of the console with the gear selector rising from it. I think that would've made better sense vs having the radio speaker in that spot to catch cigarette ashes and spilled drinks.
McNamara pushed profit and his directive for the engineers and designers turned into a iconic personal luxury automobile.

And in 1960 for the first time Ford introduced the sunroof on the Thunderbird but not the electric one that was shown in Detroit but it was manual instead (probably it cost to much to produce or, I don´t know) but that option was extreamly highpriced 212$ and 40 cents for an exklusive option. Only 2,536 owners bought the so called Golden Bird by Ford personnel. And these Golden birds are extreamly rare these days, even as a restorable project car.

The retractable convertible top is an engineering marvel. Sales of 92,843 units were very strong for the 1960 model year. The Lincoln 430 V-8 and sunroof hardtops are rare. The comparable 1963 Buick Riviera was a long way off.

I live Thunderbird to bits. I plan to get one.
Having said , the Buick Riviera whilst lacking the charm of the Thunderbird in some ways, was a much more modern car than this, and even it's direct year rival model.
