guys called "Pink Freud" (what a cringeworthy name indeed) have already made this bold move playing a handful of Ae tracks with saxophone and stuff. The drummer looked goofy trying to emulate that electronic rattle on "Montreal", not sure I listened closely after that.. Pule sounded quite nice though
Autechre, Vaetxh, Qebrus and Ital Tek have been the go to guys for “woah” for me. The 4 are pretty identical but Autechre is the most complex. Vaetxh is like Autechre ate an assload of bass tones and LFO, Qebrus is Autechres adhd little drummer brother with a side of stellar sound design and Ital Tek is when you add modern dance styles with Autechre. Autechre to me is a band, a term, a verb and a genre. Explaining their music with detail is complex on its own.
"The 4 are pretty identical" What an absolutely ridiculous statement, my god. It's like you never actually listened to any of those artists and just lumped them together because they all make weird electronic sounds.
Thanks for the recommendations! I haven't heard of Q or V. Ital Tek is vastly different but yeah, if you like Autechre's more chill beats you'll like Ital Tek. I would also recommend Richard Devine and some of the latest Tipper music. They're 'more accessable' versions of Autechre, I guess.
just got into Autechre over this past year... One of the best things to happen to me. also i let my "watch later" playlist run while i napped today and heard this video while drifting in n out of sleep... i absolutely love this riff thanks for sharing. PS "imagination balls" is the worst phrase I have ever heard, congrats!
Love Quaristice and this song, had never put together that this is what was going on. just figured the melody out on my keys; a pain to play but so fun!
Probably not by coincidence, the pattern forms a rough chiastic structure; an audile chiastic slide. Repeat it in the piano roll and you'll find a double helix.
That riff is indeed a good one. The chromatic harmonics of it is counterbalanced by the logical symmetry. The song is called IO as in input-output, btw. There's a similar aesthetic to the initial melody in Perlence as well, with a downwards scale canon creating an infinite descending effect.
6:48 Expression sums it all lol! Great fucking job man, I've been into Autechre lately a lot and I've been trying to explain the unexplainable, just like you did in this video!
“If you’re a normal human being you probably won’t like Autechre” So fucking true. I’ve been showing people these guys since 2009 and only about 4 people got into it enough to say it’s good. That’s it lol. I have them tatted on me for the simple reason that they just expanded the horizon of sound for me beyond my understanding and I’ll be able to take that to my grave.
Same here... Which I understand on some level, but at the same time - stylistically I find Autechre incredibly direct. Its hyper complex, hyper synthetic, and repetitive.
brennen spice I enjoy all the music because it’s not something you can dance to and you can dance to jazz lol. It’s almost like audio puzzles, the song Iera is a good example since you have to count the beats in the end to follow it. Pir jumps in tempo 6 times and Bine jumps 14 times but you don’t notice unless you’re bugging. Only Autechre song I can’t stand is Ectogon-S because it doesn’t sound like Autechre it just sounds bad.
if you've ever used a machinedrum or monomachine it's very apparent that they just bashed in the notes with two hands, one starting from the left and the other one starting from the right. I stumbled upon it myself by experimenting with a machinedrum.
Great video! I'm pretty sure it's io as in the moon because the version on the limited disc is called 'IO (Mons)' maybe in relation to Olympus Mons. Also, possibly the superior version as it gets a lot more dense with time rachets in the sequences.
So many scattered highlights in their discography for me. I think Exai is my current favorite, simply because it's got the largest amount of my favorite tracks for a single album, if that makes sense. How about you?
The first album I heard of theirs was Amber and happens to be my favorite with Tri Repetae close behind. I just love how atmospheric Amber is. Exai is of course great as well. Great video!
Favorite artist, and favorite EP. I love Autechre in a way only their sound can express. Here's the EP IO is from: ruclips.net/video/WfcXu3zIQVg/видео.html Bonus, here's some more accessible work by them I enjoy: ruclips.net/video/9RQFxBFhGl4/видео.html I've had one person describe them as audio terrorists 😂 if audio terrorism is the genre, that's what I want to do too
I just go by how they pronounce it (ruclips.net/video/GMnBhu3ROLo/видео.html). I love that they build their own stuff! Their mastery of max/msp is astounding. Hopefully someday they'll give us a glimpse into some of their patches.
Thanx, but I already knew that; awe-teh-cur. -Don't mind me, I'm just being a know-it-all and a dick. Don't give it a 2nd thought, but thanx again for noticing.
Idk man if you ask me simply moving through the notes on a scale without any gaps isn't fuckin anything I don't like that song nor much of any from this album they've done a lot of more interesting stuff, quaristice has some fine points but a lot seems more in the line of an axniety to retain themselves as "pioneers of electronic music" without the proper consideration of whether it'd be interesting to the listeners getting incredibly texturally playful on exai and elseq is the good stuff, not so into the generative stuff like confield, amber, incunabula, tri repetae, oversteps, exai, some of elseq, moves of ten these were the pretty ones for me
@@landonlechner Just found this track which is from 1994 which really made me think of Autechre - IO and your video: Alec Empire - Microchipkinder ruclips.net/video/tocXEe1ZPO4/видео.html&feature=emb_logo
That doesn't make all sound art music. He's right, a lot of the stuff Autechre does, especially since Confield, isn't really music. It's cool sound exploration and can make a helluva trip though, when in right mood.
I would go to a show where a jazz combo was covering Autechre tracks. This sounds great on guitar.

@Dylan Quigley Oh yeah, I forgot that I watched this years ago.
there's a cover of Cfern by a big jazz band, it sounds quite good imo
FAVORITE musical group since first release in early mid 90's! Have met them and hung out with them absolute heros. Great job on this video!

i think it's ridiculous to compare ae to them or anyone else

No.

Funny thing was I was really really really drunk when I posted this lol
your sincerity is like, in the whole format of the video. I feel like there's a lesson to be learned by a cinematographer here
I enjoyed watching you struggle to describe Autechre - great video

Once you 'get' Autechre, nothing compares. And it's also probably one of the worst phrases I've said haha.
Val Brown make sure you listen to autechre live glasgow full trk its amazing and the new elseq is sublime.
YOU'RE SO RIGHT, wouldn't you know it XD
I love amber so much, it blew my mind when it first came out.
Love Quaristice and this song, had never put together that this is what was going on. just figured the melody out on my keys; a pain to play but so fun!
Hail Autechre, you explained them very well!
i love this! thanks man! as soon as i heard the riff i recognized it! thanks for including the tabs
Great explanation of a complex Autechre riff. Thanks for sharing
Self-deprecation notwithstanding you did a pretty good job describing Autechre.
Very interesting. I just started putting in some time with their longer albums, very powerful and impressive music.
Probably not by coincidence, the pattern forms a rough chiastic structure; an audile chiastic slide. Repeat it in the piano roll and you'll find a double helix.
unlocking autechre's complexity, nice one mate
Thanks for watching, Cheers!

I like how IO is one of the few Autechre songs with vocals, or as I like to call them lyrics lol
Nice, thanks for putting this up, your ear doesn't pick up on the structural simplicitiicy of that lick at all
hm, a double hexatonic, one ascending and one descending only offset by semi-tone and -quaver. Perhaps a musical interpretation of DNA.
nice idea
Never too late to like a great comment!
That... would not be out of character at all.
I'm here now man, tell me about it
4:50 shrivel up!
you did really well pal! cheers
awesome dude!
Nice video! There are actually some lyrics precisely in that song ehe
still a fan ? :)
Really cool. I always try to play to Autechre just for the challenge. What's your favorite Autechre album?

Hmm... interesting, the riff sounds similar to the riff from Gorguts - Condemned to Obscurity.
I know this is an old comment but Sean Booth actually confirmed he's into Gorguts in a Twitch AMA earlier this year. You might be onto something.
Awe-tech-kra
au-tism
I think it is "IO," as in "input/output".
I want to think is due to the moon of Jupiter.
Honestly, it might be either of those, or an inside joke, or a procedurally generated name.
considering the fact the extended version is named io mons (io's mountains), it's jupiter's moon
Anyone know what is spoken throughout this track (Lo)?
it is IO, as in the moon, but yeah www.reddit.com/r/autechre/comments/4r2709/what_is_being_said_in_io/
now play irlite (get 0)
ah man, of course it's music
I think it's 'i o' as in the moon
sounds like battles
Not-a-normal-human being right here.
welcome to the club
Hahaha i was just listening to that
who learns autechre on guitar? if you mean their 90s stuff then its probably not that inconceiveable.
this is like Mr rogers, except his grandson, and 30 x more sexy. also, I have no idea what you are saying. #draculaMusical
I'll take all of those compliments.
Autechre, not awe-tekker. It might also interest you to know that they build their own sequencers.
I just go by how they pronounce it (ruclips.net/video/GMnBhu3ROLo/видео.html). I love that they build their own stuff! Their mastery of max/msp is astounding. Hopefully someday they'll give us a glimpse into some of their patches.
You are pronouncing it correctly.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Isn't music sound art?...lol
Ha good point. Although I'm sure lots of people would argue there isn't much art in a lot of the more mainstream music out there.

wow i cannot imagine how narrow your sonic horizons are for you to think autechre are as outre as you make out
Daniel Neofetou please sir, give a few examples of what you consider to be more than AE. I'm really genuinely curious here.
urm literally any music which doesn't employ rhythm or melody...
Daniel Neofetou I hope I can discover something new here. can you please give a few examples - like a few tracks to listen to? thanks!
or a bit of this ruclips.net/video/fR_8gpJCT4I/видео.html
