  • The history of sugary sweets can be traced all the way back to 6000 BC, and the word "candy" is derived from "khanda," an ancient Sanskrit word that translates to "piece of sugar." From fruit juice toffee in Ukraine to coconut drops in Jamaica, we'll take a look at candy around the world.

    1:47 That Iranian sugar cane is called Nabat, it works like sugar cubes to sweeten tea, hot drinks, etc. It’s rock solid! Never seen anyone chew on them like candies. You should have searched more cause Iran has lots of wonderful local candies!

      do you have a version thats crystalized around a stick for eating in addition to just using big lumps for beverages?

    • @JohnAK72
      @JohnAK72 Год назад +2

      @@Crosshill Actually we have both types, the version which the crystals have formed over a stick is just a treat works mainly as hot beverage sweetener (single dose). The big chunky ones are basically the same thing, just a different shape and size (their crystals have formed up around a tiny cotton string instead of a wood stick). Don’t get fool by the shiny crystals, they look really cool and people sometimes want to chew on them like lollipop, but believe me it’s not a very good idea cause they’re rock solid (tried it as a kid).

    Here is the story of how salt water taffy got its name: In an East Coast Beach resort town (some say Atlantic City) a big storm came in and flooded a candy maker's store ruining a batch of taffy. Some kids walked by and asked if they could have the taffy since the maker was going to throw it out anyway. When they asked what flavor the taffy was the maker said that it was now "salt water taffy." The maker was shocked to see that the kids loved the candy and asked for more. The maker quickly realized what they had discovered and soon taffy with a pinch of sea salt to enhance the flavor became one of his best selling candy.
