Our LONGEST Honda Rebel Roadtrip Almost BROKE Us

  • We’re just not fans of long highway rides at all; ‪@KomotoVlogs‬ and I both know that. But when ‪@therideofalifetime‬ said he was having his first group ride 2 states away…we had to test the theory.
    So we got to planning (barely), packed up our Honda Rebels (one of which we just built days prior), and hit the road for a 4 day trip, across 3 states, covering ~850 miles along the way. And man. Turns out we were right. Long highway trips still are NOT our cup of tea 😂
    The time we spent there with friends more than made up for any grievances or hiccups along the way though, and we cant wait for the next big ride!!

      Thanks dude!! I thought about doing a longer episode, and honestly thought it would need to be much longer than this, but all the voiceovers really helped convey everything while keeping the time manageable still. The type bike you're on can certainly change the experience on long road trips. I've never ridden a Rebel, but I can't imagine I'd enjoy a long road trip on one. Baggers and Touring bikes are the way to go on long trips.

    My wife and I just recently got our rebels, while hurricane Helene made landfall south of us 😄. Drove in a downpour to the only dealer in our area that had both the 1100 and 500. I haven't ridden in 30 years and my wife wanted to learn so here we are...been watching your videos and it helped make up our minds to get rebels as our first bikes. Technically my third, my first was a Yamaha 250 enduro, had alot of fun on both dirt and the highway with it. Briefly owned a 550 nighthawk that i used for work...that bike was a beast, had 130 on the speedo and would go past that easily, before speed limiters were a thing I guess 🙄.
    We appreciate you and the videos you have made, lots of good info brother. Subbed to your channel soon as we got our bikes home and as my wife is new to this i have had her watching some of Nina's videos but she hasn't subbed yet. Speaking of your lady, where did she get the bag/pouch that is attached to her gas tank? That looks awesome! Would like to get one for my wife.
    Awesome work and many thanks to both you and Nina..

    Love this! Highway/freeway riding is the most boring and sometimes grueling with all the traffic. I took my 500 on a 15 day, 4100 mile trip from CA to SD (Sturgis!) and back. Went through 10 states. Majority of the days were over 300 miles, (starting at 7/8am). There were some amazing roads and very dull, boring ones. Some suggestions next time you're riding in the heat - a cooling vest, cooling towels and UV shirts soaked in water. :) It helps, even for a short period. You two are adorable! ♥

    I tried telling you a few years back that you needed a backrest on your motorcycle. You said you weren't old enough for a backrest. You're riding the wrong bike for a 350 mile one way ride. I have a2023 rebel 1100dct tour. Corbin seat with driver backrest. And forward pegs. I can and easily ride 300 to 500 miles on that bike. On my 2021 Goldwing DCT tour with backrest and highway pegs. I ride 600 to a thousand miles a day on that bike. I have ridden from NEPA to key west Florida and back. So picking the right bike for the job is essential. Kinda common sense though.

    It seems like you had a fun time! Thank you for sharing. :) It's nice to have a significant other as a riding buddy.
    I'm with you on long haul riding not being "my vibe." It was fun (in its own way) to ride from Tulsa to Altus, OK and back in 90+ degree weather, but a trip that normally takes 4.5h in the car, took us 12h on bikes and we were grateful for the whirlpool tub at our hotel. The trip back to Tulsa resulted in an impromptu hotel stay, about an hour from home, because it was so dark, riding Route 66 (not a well lit road in parts) and we only had dark visors. We were so sore that we just crashed out on the comfy bed with the pup who was glad were were home. Not saying I won't do it again, but I'm not jumping at every long haul opportunity, for sure.

    just got home from a road trip, Edmonton to Winnipeg return, 810 miles each way, 14 hours door to door each way. Did it on my 2020 Rebel 1100 DCT. T-Rex control extenders and Airhawk seat cushion were a big help. In my early 70's so won't likely do again such long drives in a day. On each leg, spent about 4 hours in driving rain in thunderstorms and found out my Honda Rebel saddle bags are not water proof as advertised. I recommend double bagging anything you don't want to get wet.

I do very little Interstate riding only when necessary for short periods to next smaller road. High winds & rain wear my A-- Out. Beautiful Country Up There , compared to West Tejas

    So....won't be seeing the LifeOfBurch crew getting their Iron Butt ride in anytime soon? haha. I feel it though, 3300 miles in and still on the factory seat for my 1100t(Honda really should give you a tiny kickback, wonder how many other rebel owners found initial info through this channel) and if I hit over 1 or 2 hours in the seat...I need 30 mins to an hour of butt rest. Makes long rides a bit more tedious if you are just walking around a gas station parking lot trying to get your hindquarters feeling normal again hah.

    So nice to see those kind of blogs, I really like the rebel and you convinced me to finally buy one after I get my A2 License!
    I wanted to start with the 300cc one but they don't sell it here in France for some reason, so guess I'll start with the 500 ahah
    See ya next video guys and thx for the content!

    I've never been into the long haul trips either. Longest I've done is to a neighboring city which was about a 3 hour ride. Riding on the highway is just boring to me, and pretty uncomfortable after a while with that wind hitting you as you go 65 to 80 mph.
    Rides around town or on back roads are much better imo. I'm a daily commuter, take my bike to work, to the grocery store, to the gym, and pretty much anywhere else. But I don't do the long haul trips lol

    I did my longest drive in 16 years on the midsummer weekend and drove 1500km in 3 days. Long days, as we always left at 8.00am and usually arrived to our destination at 18.00-19.00pm. We avoided highways and tried to do the whole trip through backroads with max speed limit being 80km/h (these are the speeds and roads we like). The 3rd day of the trip that was the longest was the easiest. In about 6-7 weeks we will propably go to norway and back in about 9 days.

    Beautiful video!!! I enjoyed watching the whole thing! What was your range on a tank of gas on your 1100? I’m so glad you’re able to do this for a living, your content is A+!!

      @LifeOfBurch  3 месяца назад +1

      Thanks so much dude, I really appreciate that!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
      On this trip I averaged between 48-52mpg. The gas light starts flashing pretty early around 120-130 miles, but once it starts flashing there’s a full gallon left til empty. The most I ever filled up on this trip was 2.92 gallons at 142 miles. The Rebel 1100 has a 3.6 gallon tank, so theoretically I could’ve made it ~170 miles on that tank and had fumes left.
      The Rebel 500 gets better gas mileage, so it was always interesting to see Nina end up needing less gas than me at every stop 😂 But her tank is also .6 gallons smaller, so it all evened out.

    Okay so, the best idea I can give for longer trips is not back roads, but state roads. Don't be afraid to get off the interstate if rush hour is happening. Also while I love my Rebel, this bike is clearly not built for long distance rider comfort. Time is your friend. Stop and see the useless and weird stuff along the way if for nothing else to get out of the saddle more often and top off. Leave waaaaaaaaaaaaay earlier than you need to.
    I rode up to Lake Erie on Friday. While not as long as your trip miles wise (around 220 miles there and back). I need to get more long trips in when I have the time. Ohio has byways that stretch on for miles, have almost no cars, are scenic af, and bonus, no cops.

    Yeah, there's some special mapping skills to avoiding traffic & especially missing the Rush Hour Commutes of every med/large
    city..... I've done a lot of those 1200+ mile trips but not on a bike. What's up w/ your leaks? I thought I heard you say the water
    coolant hose had a leak & then I thought you said oil was leaking..... both suck but I'm curious is it both & what's the cause?
    Guess it'll be, "Content" for 2 videos? 1 fixing the water system & another for the oil. I'll be patiently awaiting those. peace

  • @luvnotvideos
    @luvnotvideos 3 месяца назад

    Looks like y'all had fun - but dude, what's up with all the oil leak problems with the Rebels? Seems like as long as you've had the bikes, there's been an issue with the oil leaking. Is this systemic to the Rebel in general? Do other riders complain of the same issue? I really want an 1100 manual, but am hesitant seeing this problem.

    Them long rides can be exhausting and stressful sometimes. Hey but the rebel 1100 has cruise control which is nice. I'm from Kentucky so your in my neck of the woods somewhat, West Virginia is very hilly mountainie but beautiful place.

    • @LifeOfBurch
      @LifeOfBurch  3 месяца назад

      The worst part is that I didn’t even use cruise control 😭 Nina doesn’t have it so I wanted to go without so that we were experiencing the same things. Ok…maybe I used it once or twice just for a quick hand stretch…but still 😂

    I’ve done a lot of long distance riding. 40,000 miles in the last 3 1/2 years. Two things, long days riding in hot weather is always difficult, and destination driven riding, especially on the interstate, is also my least favorite. Riding with no real plans, and no reservations anywhere, is a completely different experience. I know it sounds sketchy with no plans and no reservations, but it’s the best experience on a motorcycle. Stop for the day whenever, and wherever, you want 👍

    • @LifeOfBurch
      @LifeOfBurch  3 месяца назад +1

      Yup, what you just described is exactly my kind of riding! “Journey” focused vs “destination” focused. This ride would’ve been much better if we didn’t feel the pressure of a deadline, and if we could actually enjoy the stops rather than feeling guilty for the time we were adding. I think if we had the leeway to stop at any random coffee shops we spotted from the highway, hitting all the scenic overlooks, etc., we could easily go longer than this next time!

    I used to LOVE highway miles but now I'm just out there like ok, my legs hurt a little. This is cool but can I just be there now? These days I'd rather go 40 on a back road than 70 on the highway. Oh and captains wafers are the shit. Good choice.

    We have put down nearly 7k miles in the past 6 months. I avoid the interstate like the plague. Not why I bought a motorcycle. I want to see America and you can't do that properly from the interstate. Our range is typically only about 350 miles as well. Sometimes it may take a little longer but you might be surprised, not always. Just some suggestions is all.
