    • @PondGardenCruiseWithDTG
      @PondGardenCruiseWithDTG  3 года назад

      Hi! We didn’t have green water problem. Green water is a common and recurring problem. To prevent it, you should provide some degree of shade & add plants to your pond. Ideally, you’ll want to cover approximately 60% of the pond’s surface with plants. Keep the amount of fish & feed your fishes suitable with your filter system. Install a UV light and use beneficial bacteria helps to prevent green water algae from growing.

      Hi Jordan! We found the best way to deal with most predators is covering the pond with a fine net. It denies all animals access to the fishes and is relatively easy to find in stores and set up.

    A nice pond, You put a lot of work into it. But it looks to be a bit small for the number of Koi that you have. They will soon overtake your filtration system, water quality will drop, and they will become sick. If you must have fish in a pond of that size, Goldfish are your best bet. About 4 or 5 max, to start. On the up side, you have left yourself an almost perfect area for natural filtration system which will eliminate the need for UV light, and filter pads, which need constant attention.

    • @PondGardenCruiseWithDTG

      Hi Teresa! You’re absolutely right about this 1000 gallons for the amount of kois that we have. Kois need the room to get big and grow like they are supposed to. So we’ve upgraded our pond to 10,000 gallons. The video’ll be posted soon 😆😊

    Our pond, about 6 ft. by 7 ft. and about 2 ft. deep, is mostly above ground, a large plastic bin is what we bought, surrounded it with stand up concrete blocks, filled in with earth (actually sand, here in Florida) and colorful plants in the earth. We have a 47 watt submersible pump, water plants, like hyacinth (which is illegal here in Florida to put into moving water or sloughs because it is invasive) which cover about 1/3 of the pond surface, and we clean our pump filter every few days. Water is from rain and sprinkler (from our own well which has no chlorine). We have very hot summers, 90 F. for the past 3 months, and our pond water is very dirty. Do not know how to clean the water other than emptying the pond. We have about 25 small goldfish and one small Koi. Love your video, but our pond is a lot different. When we empty our pond and clean it, the bottom is like mud, not sure where it is coming from, except the water plants. Any idea how to get our pond clean? You are using the same water hyacinth that we have.

      Gwynn Alcorn I’m not an expert, but I’ll tell you from my own experience and what I’ve learnt so far:
      Treat you pond with beneficial bacteria weekly (check out our video No Dig Pond for the specific product that we’ve been using)
      Install UV light
      Control your feeding, use pond kit to test your water, if the results come back not good, you might have to stop feeding for few days.
      If the water’s not getting better, you can use the pond vacuum to remove the dirts from the bottom.
      Hope this helps!

    • @PondGardenCruiseWithDTG
      @PondGardenCruiseWithDTG  3 года назад +1

      It’s quite natural for a pond to turn green. There are a number of causes of green pond water: too many fish, not enough filtration, not enough plants, water temperature and pond position. In this case, we didn’t have enough plants. It’s suggested that covering the pond's surface area with 40-60% plants will help to reduce excess nutrients, control algae blooms, and provide cover for the fish. You should check out our “Yard Landscaping” video, no more green water after we covered 2/3 of the pond surface with floating plants. Here’s the link

      You're absolutely right about the mosquito season, ponds can become the worst nightmare. Luckily, there are several ways to get rid of mosquitos naturally such as keep the water moving by simply adding an electric aeration pump or a fountain. Or curb the algae, when mosquitos hatch, they need a food source to boost their growth. Ponds are often ripe with thick layers of algae, which is great for a developing mosquito. By eliminating this food supply, you can keep mosquitoes away and also make your pond look cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing.

    Do I need a filtration system in my pond if I'm not planning on having any fish in it, or can I just use the pump to aerate the water?

    • @PondGardenCruiseWithDTG
      @PondGardenCruiseWithDTG  3 года назад +1

      Hi Andile! If you are intending not to have any fish, you may choose not to have a filter. You will need plenty of plants, probably covering two thirds of the pond area. These plants, along with naturally occurring helpful bacteria in the pond, hopefully will provide a good natural balance and a clear pond.
      However, plants also add nutrients when they die. Algae grows best with high light and high nutrient levels. When the nutrients get high enough, the algae takes over the pond and chokes everything else out, hence why most people still opt for a filter of some kind.
