A FANGtastic Soulslike - Let's Talk About It: Code Vein

  • Team Shift, responsible for God Eater, aka "anime Monster Hunter," tries their hand at the souls subgenre. Code Vein was released simultaneously worldwide in September of 2019 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It received some DLC roughly six months later. That being the add on dungeons Hellfire Knight, Frozen Empress, and Lord of Thunder. However, none of this content is covered in this video. Outside of that, Code Vein has not received any bundles or definitive editions.
Overall the game, while challenging, was still quite fun. The class system adds a surprising layer of depth to the gameplay, as well as allowing the player to approach the game from multiple angles and deal with most enemies as they see fit.
    0:00 Intro
    1:05 Weapons
    2:51 Blood Veils
    4:43 Gifts and Blood Codes
7:20 A small criticism with equipment
    9:10 Story summary
    32:19 All 3 endings
36:21 Closing comments (DLC, what's that?)
    39:02 The character creator
Most of this video is my opinion, feel free to agree or disagree so long as you do so reasonably.

Honestly, Code Vein had one of the most mysterious, captivating, and original storylines and worlds I've seen out of any game, let alone other Souls-likes, which is absolutely not what I expected when I went into it. I also absolutely loved the class system for how modular it was and how strategic and fun many of the passive and active abilities were. And the memory sequences had me downright emotional at times.
While it wasn't a perfect game by far, Code Vein somehow ended up being one of the Souls-like games that felt the most memorable to me, right behind the first Dark Souls. I doubt it'll ever get a sequel... but I thought the same for Dragon's Dogma, so who knows. Hopefully if it does come out, it'll be as magical as the first.

First off, hats off to you for being one of the few youtubers who still occasionally talks about God Eater.
Second, my theory is it takes place at latest before or early God Eater 2 and starts maybe like 10+ years after after the mass Aragami outbreak solely because we know the universe is connected but there was never any mention of anything similar to the Red Rain epidemic presented at the start of GE2 and if GER and the anime are anything to go off the Dyaus Pita may be a more rare Aragami so its few in numbers so it isnt impossible to rule out thats the same one that ate Alisa's parents leading it to happen during GER as well. Some people speculate it takes place during or after GE3 and personally I think thats way to late a time period and im more then positive the Ash would he corrosive to the red mist if not outright consume it.

    • @thunderconcerto9807
      @thunderconcerto9807 2 месяца назад +1

there was confirmation from the dev that the game was not set on GE universe though. but with the clear appearance of vajra I wonder if that statement will still stand if this game got any sequel.

    • @DistraughtK
      @DistraughtK 2 месяца назад +1

Huh thats crazy, almost 1100 hour between all GE games and i never seen a Vajra that looked like a Dyaus Pita xD
But all seriousness though. I am aware of that info but you cant just drop a cutscene like that after saying the two arent connected without elaborating anything. Even going back to GER and GE2 the whirling plans are littered in what can even be considered the "thorns of judgment" all over the gaol of the red mist. Id accept reused assets but the ones in CV are more highly detailed so it was intentional.

It's sad that Team Shift has been so silent these past 5 years. God Eater & Code Vein definitely have the potential to for improvement in sequels, but only if the studio is willing to commit. Bandai's reliance on FromSoft, Tales, mediocre anime fighting games & Tekken (completely overshadowing Soul Calibur) really hinders the potential of these smaller titles. It has me concerned about Team Shift's future given all the layoffs going on in the industry.

  • @titanium4082

Minor nitpick about the Nicola "death" with jack present
Jack "kills" the clone, he doesn't frenzy and turn to ash. Otherwise, very good video :)
Edit after seeing the DLC bit: Yea, it's awful. I did get everything in the DLC dungeons, and it has some story regarding Jack and a previous successor, which I enjoyed a lot. It shows him and this person exploring and sealing the Horrors, that he still thinks of you (the person he murdered after you killed the queen) and is lamenting over it before it finally culminates in him killing the successor when they begin to show signs of Frenzy.
A brief rundown of the DLC: The three bosses resemble Aragami. The one in the fiery oblivion or whatever is Hannibal but so much cooler. Phase one is just the typical Hannibal movements plus some, phase two involves it being like hannibal but if you broke its scale. The one in the Celestial Ice Prison, I have no idea. It has gauntlets so maybe it's supposed to resemble a Marduck? I'm not too sure, and would rather someone else look over that. Probably the easiest boss, if you can manage the two crystals that float alongside it. The one in the Eternal Abyss is supposed to resemble a Vajra/Dias Pita and is an annoying twat with phases. Yeah, that's right, phases, plural. You can kinda tell what it's gonna do when the colours on it change a little bit. It sucks. Each DLC boss requires you to follow some challenges to unlock their Cores and Vestiges to unlock their skills, which are very strong.
There are a couple new blood codes unlocked by the DLC as well, besides the aforementioned ones. One or two require you to do a challenge in the boss arenas to unlock them, which you can view by looking at the sword near the boss arena.
Some advice for DLC: Try, try, try. You'll have to find what works for you, and it will suck and be annoying as hell. I tried to isolate a lot of enemies where I could and if I could with some success. Mostly used a strength build to flex my way through the fights since it was what i was cozy with, but I made sure to use whatever else I could to let me keep buffing my damage with stuff like overdrive and adrenaline.
    Horror bosses:
Hellfire Knight is weak to Thunder attacks and weapons (Kinda odd but I guess it's like fire/grass/water)
Frozen Empress is weak to Fire attacks and weapons (least this makes sense)
Lord of Thunder is weak to Ice attacks and weapons (no comment)

    • @weaponsci
      @weaponsci  3 месяца назад +3

Huh, idk how I missed that detail about Nicola, but thanks for clearing it up.
As for the dlc, I've already beaten Hellfire Knight a few times. He was actually pretty easy with Jack since his communal gift is pretty strong and gives you lots of stamina to work with.
However, to get some of the alternate costumes for Louis and Io, I had to bring them, use their blood codes, and also use their communal gifts. Not necessarily all at once, but you get what I mean.
As I said in the video, Io was a pretty OP companion, so fighting with her wasn't too bad. Bringing Louis on the other hand, was an absolute nightmare and the main reason I was retrying the boss so many times.
If I had to guess, I would say frozen empress has similar achievements and rewards for Mia and Eva, while Lord of thunder is for Yakumo and Jack? Idk I haven't been there yet, just guessing.

For those coming in from this review and might be worried about the Ornstein and Smough fight of this game, the game does actually give you a huge benefit in that the two will never focus on the same person at the same time. For example if you're fighting Blade Bearer and she suddenly turns towards your ally, you are meant to switch over to fighting Cannoneer because he will be focusing you with his attacks now, and your NPC ally will also tag attention between the two so your're basically both fighting mostly 1v1s but against rotating bosses.

I'm pretty sure this game takes place during the events of god eater 1 because the Moon is White and so that mean our little friend didn't eat it. And it wound be a different color i forgot what color it turns and bright too.
Also I think they should have stayed inside because there's nowhere in the world that beating some of the monstrosities that are in God Eater imagine if Ouroboros or Hannibal just pops up like they're dead. And especially God Eater 2 and 3 good God they're not surviving.
But i do hope we can still meet these characters later on but I don't see them surviving especially with their weapons and how those monsters from God Eater can evolve and how fast they all are.

Not going to lie this game was a bit difficult for me, I had to get use to the fact that you could accidentally fall in a hole if you dodge the wrong way and sometimes movement felt a bit slow and I wished I could get more healing items. (I'm not a top tier gamer so I need all the help I can get) Also the emotes got in the way, I have no idea if there was a way to get rid of it completely, but I had to put it on a button I wouldn't accidentally push during combat.
Other then that I liked the story and vibe, it was also interesting that they kind of gave the protagonist a backstory. Kind of like how they sort of give you something with the protagonist in GE3 with them being childhood friends with Hugo and being saved by Soma. I don't know what'll come first, a sequel or a crossover. Either way I hope they keep utilizing the highly detailed character customization, it was a lot of fun to use.

24:16 Mido is a successor as well and and his 3 bodyguards since they carried relics are successors as well. There is also one that was killed by Jack in the Dried-Up Trenches.
One more you get to know about through some vestiges you get in the DLC's.
In regards to the God Eater connection, it was obviously never confirmed and a developer said the connections were meant more as easter eggs. So until a new God Eater or Code Vein is released it's best to assume Code Vein takes place in a parallel universe.
That said the DLC bosses are Aragami as well, so they are an additional connection.

Not only is the character creator great, but you can also save presets and just load the looks for later; you can even bypass the unavailable options after you made your character by... starting a new game, enter the initial character creator, save to preset, gtfo, load your original save, go to the mirror to change your look, and then load the preset you made. Spent untold amount of hours just fooling around in the character creator, and on PC this goes even further with mods (I just mod in GE3 outfits in because the aesthetic match the game, along with a bunch of hairstyles).
Anyway the game really encourage creative character builds, it's really easy to become OP once you find the perfect combination of skills and bloodcode which makes the experience more satisfying after all the grinding and brain exercise. I play throughout the game almost always in Co-op with a friend and it's really fun to gank on a poor enemy once in awhile. The only real criticism I have is how the animation isn't as well telegraphed as Souls, hell it's not even as good as God Eater monsters; bosses do these cheap attacks that would've been frustrating if not for the fact that your teammate can just insta revive.
All in all it's pretty okay, but I must say this is the only game I know to have magic guns and that's pretty unique and novel. With the help of some mods, I've made (grown up) Tanya from Youjo Senki since that's one of the few stories I know with magic guns, quite proud with the result imgur.com/a/WUHMGpO
Also I'm relieved to not be the only one playing GE hub music on the jukebox.

I feel like I have a weird perspective of "Code Vein". Mainly in that, I don't like "Soulslikes" even remotely. I even thought about passing on this game after finding out it was one. But at the same time, I am a "God Eater" fan so that alone was enough to get me to just deal with it.
So from a "God Eater" fan's perspective, "Code Vein" has so much "God Eater" DNA in it. Makes sense, same developer. "Code Vein" definitely is to "God Eater" what "Soulslikes" are to "Monster Hunter". Similar, if not the exact same, mechanics but just more RPG-fied. Now just add the same composer (Go Shiina), similar concepts, character designs, multiple direct and in-direct references, etc...and it's a no brainer.
That said, the future is certainly uncertain, for both series unfortunately. Shift got absorbed by Bandai Namco, to the point where their company name isn't even credited anymore. Heck, even "God Eater 3" was primarily outsourced to Marvelous, only certain key staff from Shift assisting in the development. As much as I'd like either a "God Eater 4" or "Code Vein 2", who knows?
At this point, I just want to complain about how poorly Bandai advertised "Code Vein" in just about every conceivable way. Like, those 40 second boss and area trailers that spoil something like 80% of the entire game and even some of its plot twists were not necessary. Even Bandai's now atrocious DLC practices were starting to show around this time. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if it was Bandai's decision to make "Code Vein" as "Soulslike" as possible since FromSoftware were seemingly finished with "Dark Souls" around that time, so they needed a replacement of sorts.

I also think dlc was bad because bamco doesnt understand why souls games are fun. They're the kind of challenge that feels "mostly" fair where as dlc is like "whats that? You paid attention and tried baiting out enemies to prevent an ambush? Well fuck you have 30 lost on your ass at once sucker!"

This is why I keep using the Ivy veils when exploring, easy snipes and it's even better if you use bayonets.

Code Vein likely takes place before GE1 considering the moon's still in one piece. I'm hesitant to say during GE2 because the Red Rain happens a lot around that time and we would've seen it by now. Definitely not during GE3 because the Ashlands forced everyone to hide underground.
Also, I like to think that it's the same Dyaus Pita who turned Alisa's parents into a family combo meal considering it was still a newly-discovered species during the first game.

I love the jokes😂 also this is my favorite game 😍 it's nice to see it thrive, even though a lot of people gave it crap. Yeah it's not perfect but it's fun and i love it 😊
Also, IO is the best companion 😍🥹😭🥲🤍
