As someone who struggled with crippling anxiety and depression for years, this movie became a fantasy to me. I felt that I was wasting so much time hiding from the world. Literally years of my life spent away and alone. The idea of repeating the day over and over and, more importantly, having time to self-improve and change your ways... What a gift!

To answer your question: Groundhog Day was orginally an ancient European pagan agrarian holiday called Imbolc (it has since been Christianized into Candlemas). On Imbolc people would watch the dens of hybernating animals for signs of Spring. If the animals saw their shadow (because there's still snow on the ground) the animal would return to their dens and continue to hybernate for roughly six weeks. If they didn't see their shadow, it was a sign that there might be an early Spring thaw, thus allowing farmers to begin planting crops early.

I've been to Punxy for groundhog day. It's a trip. People partying, singing, dancing, having fun. Before covid Gobblers Knob would have 15,000 to 20,000 people for it. When covid happened the only people there were the Inner Circle (the guys in top hats). This year they had about 15,000 or so people there.

Originally, the film's director, Harold Ramis, stated that he thought Bill's character was trapped in Punxsutawney for about 10 years. In 2009, however, he revealed that estimate was probably too short.
“It takes at least 10 years to get good at anything,” Harold said, “and allotting for the down time and misguided years he spent, it had to be more like 30 or 40 years.”.xx

Favorite movie of mine for 30 years. Great reaction. I took my wife to the Groundhog Festival 10 years ago. We passed the actor who played NED RYERSON on the street and got a picture with him. He must go there in reality for GROUNDHOG DAY. A few things about Phil's time there... it took 6 months to get good at throwing cards in a hat. But he was most likely there for years at that point. Someone on youtube created a realistic timeline based on all the events and how long it would take to learn his skills at the end of the film... according to their estimates, Phil Conners was there for decades. Possibly 40 years.

Someone analysed everything Phil did or said and they estimated the Timeloop to last a Minimum of 10-15 Years, probably longer (depending how intensive Phil is learning/improving his Skills and learning about all the People in Town,Rita, etc.)

    • @nooneofconsequence1251
      @nooneofconsequence1251 2 года назад +19

Given everything that happens in the movie I think 10 years is actually ridiculous. 10,000 seems more plausible. To know literally every single person in the town, their entire backstory, know every single thing that happens in the town every day down to the exact second it happens so that you can count down to it - that alone would take 10,000 years - plus on top of that...becoming a doctor, learning French, becoming a master piano player, master ice sculptor, master card flipper, a doctor/chiropractor, creating the perfect date with Rita, dating and sleeping with probably every other woman in town... and then going through his other periods where he was too depressed to do anything, or trying to kill himself.. 10 years is WAY too short a time span to get all of that done. It was at least 100 years. And much more likely 10,000+. I mean, I've lived in my town for several years and I still don't even know all the people who live on my street. Phil knew the intimate details of the lives of every person in Punxatawny. He must have had SO MANY days where he just would go and befriend a new person, and then spend a few weeks or months going back to them, talking to them, doing different things with them. Just to change things up a bit it makes sense. But how else would he achieve omniscience? If it was 10k in an early script and then they changed it to 10 to be less intense, then there must have been many other parts of the script that they left the same that only make sense with the 10k timeframe.

    • @nooneofconsequence1251

He said he saw that one movie over 100 times... that's half a year gone right there. And you have to assume that theater has more than one movie playing. He's probably seen all of them upwards of 100 times. And that was very early on in the movie! 10 years is WAY too short. As much as happens on-screen you have to assume, based on context and other clues, that there's at least 1000x more stuff that happens off-screen. Probably more than that. He had to keep doing it until he got the day perfectly right.

Regarding the 6 weeks, the basis for that is based on the seasons. We often think of winter starting well before the winter solstice, just like how we often think of summer starting well before late June. The weather tends to shift closer to the midpoint between the solstices and the equinoxes. Halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox is the week of Groundhog's Day. Each season lasts 13 weeks. So the halfway point is 6.5 weeks.
Thus, when they say it's 6 more weeks of winter, it's really 6 weeks give or take a few days before the spring (vernal) equinox. When spring is just around the corner, I often said it was just around the corner in 6 weeks. Some animals do respond to the shift in the seasons by roughly that time of year.
I saw someone else pointed out some pagan origins, and suggested that Christians tried to co-opt the day as Candlemas. However, the Christian part is based on the events of the Bible. Once one determines the date of birth of Jesus, which has a few options, but many very, very early sources point to December 25th, other dates naturally follow. Jewish customs set a different number of days post-birth for the presentation of the child in the Temple. For males, it was 40 days. 40 days after Christmas is February 2nd. The Christianization of something pagan could sound plausible if one doesn't know the customs and origins of the people and times.

One of my favorite movies starring one of my favorite actors! Great reaction James! Only wish the part where he tries to save the homeless man was included, it is a major turning point for Phil, I always thought that's when he realized there's some things you can't change, as in life, all you can do is be the best possible person you can be. And that's what he did. And that's what broke the curse!
    Happy Groundhogs Day! 😉

Some people have tried to compute how many years (decades, actually) that Phil would have to have been in the loop as a minimum. The original concept of the film would have had us joining into the situation in the midst of the loops, well after Phil had gotten used to it. But they changed it to allow us to enter into the loop with him and discover the oddity with him.
They cut a concept that was intended to help Phil keep track of how many times he experienced the loop. At the bed and breakfast, there was a bookshelf full of books that he was going to be reading a page of each day. He would start with the first book on the top shelf. Without the ability to leave a bookmark that could survive the loop without losing the place, he had to read the books a page at a time to know where he left off. At some point, he would complete that book and start the next book. Then he would reach the end of the top shelf and start the next row. This would continue, and he would eventually reach the end of the last book on the bookshelf. Then he would restart that process... That would really make the weight of the time heavy on viewers.
Oh, and a sequel was considered. The sequel that never happened would have had Rita experience a loop of the next day. I liked the movie as a stand-alone. But at the same time, it would have been interesting to see someone who has been through the loop observing someone going through the loop. The swapping of those roles may have been interesting. But I am satisfied with the one movie.

Sadly this would be the last collaboration between longtime friends Bill Murray and Harold Ramus, and not long after was the last time they spoke.
They had creative differences over this movie. Murray wanted it to be darker and Ramus lighter. Personally I think it had the perfect balance.
I adore this film, but would give it up, so those two could have remained friends.
They eventually patched things up, but sadly it was after Harold Ramus could no longer speak and days before his passing.
This is one of the many reasons Ghostbusters Afterlife is so emotional for so many.

Punxatawney Pa, is the ground hog the they use every year on Ground Hog's day. Every year I want to shoot that damn ground hog because he always sees his shadow. It started when German speaking people from Europe came over here. Feb 2nd was known as Badger Day, If a badger emerging from his burrow on a sunny day & cast a shadow, it was said to be a warning of 4 more weeks of winter. Times & traditions changed a bit over the years. Great reaction.

A fun fact for this movie is that it was actually shot entirely backwards. Harold Ramis knew from working with Bill Murray so many times, that during the filming process Bill becomes more and more of an ass on set till he is almost unbearable to work with. So in order to capitalize on that Ramis shot the beginning part when the character is an ass last to get the best performance from Bill.

Other countries have the same custom, I know in Serbia there is the bear that comes out and sees the shadow and that means a longer winter, so I’m thinking there’s some kind of correspondance with the overcast skies at that time of year generally meaning there will be less late winter storms.

Ramis has said that his 10 year estimate was probably too short, and it was more like 30-40 years. 33 years, I think is the bare minimum for mastering all of the skills he mastered, plus the people he learned about (and slept with), all the times he failed to woo Rita, all the incidents and accidents he interacted with, just the deaths we saw (or heard about) on-screen, and seeing "Heidi 2" one-hundred times.
That assumes he's actually working diligently for the rest of the time we don't see him goofing off; but how many books did he read on French poetry? How many other books did he read? How much time did he actually spend with the people of Punxatawny? Could do your head in; but everyone needs a day off now and again, and I'd bet it was a lot loner than 40 years.

Great Movie. It is a comedic spiritual movie . Fun fact the mayor of the town is Bill Murray real brother. Also there was suppose to be a scene that there was a witch who cursed Phil but they decided not to put it in and leave it open. Another movie with same time loop story but more serious and sci fi is The Edge of Tomorrow 2014 with Tom Cruise. Another great Bill Murray sarcastic comedy movie is MeatBalls or the Ghostbusters movies (You should see the second one also).

Meatballs really isn’t much of a Murray movie. He’s in it doing his thing, but not the star. There are no stars. They were all young unknowns. It’s a silly 70’s teen romp. Directed by Reitman that also did Ghostbusters. One of the pretty young girls in that cast is a close personal friend of mine these days and still a great actress when she’s not being a Mom.

One theory is that Ned the insurance salesman is the devil “I sure as heckfire remember you!” and that Phil sold his soul by buying the insurance (signing a contract with the Devil) to escape the time loop. Alternatively, and on the bright side, the time loop for 10,000 years (mastering all that knowledge, new skills, and achieving enlightenment is not quickly done for most) was to achieve enlightenment per Buddhist philosophy that allowed his release.

  • @LordVolkov

Bill Murray is a master of sarcastic quips. I love his transition from mean to kind over the course of his time-loop, and the shenanigans he gets up to as he essentially becomes immortal are very thought provoking.
For a horror comedy with the same timeloop premise - Happy Death Day.
As others have pointed out, Bill's older brother Brian is the mayor. Two of his other brothers, John and Joel, are also actors. Very talented family. Brian and John are in the Christmas classic Scrooged with Bill. Hopefully you can get to it when the holidays roll around this year.
