How far back do you want to go? There's a great little film that inspired You've Got Mail, called Shop Around the Corner (1940), with wonderful performances by Jimmy Stewart and Frank Morgan (who played the Wizard of Oz the previous year).

Actually, yes-You've Got Mail and When Harry Met Sally ARE the same genre. Both are romantic comedies. Both star Meg Ryan. The only way they could be MORE alike is if your Friday movie was Sleepless in Seatle. That and You've Got Mail are both romantic comedies starring Meg Ryan AND Tom Hanks. Also, all three were written by Nora Ephron (who also directed Sleepless in Seatle and You've Got Mail)

Those other two movies wish they could hold a candle to When Harry Met Sally. When Harry Met Sally is one of the best films, maybe not of all time, but certainly of its genre. Those lesser two movies are Hallmark movies of the week. I never saw either when they came out, and never felt like I was missing out. I’ve seen When Harry Met Sally dozens and dozens of times, and enjoy it every time. When I finally saw the other two… 🤷🏻‍♂️ Never watched them again.

18:35 Yes, in my family growing up, we often sang around the piano, and my siblings and I still do this with one another and our own families now. My parents both played, and my mom used to teach piano, and my dad used to write songs for piano. He was a pastor and she was a nursery school teacher. Every Christmas, dad would write a new carol, and he wrote many other types of songs.
Now at family gatherings (especially around the holidays) we like to gather around the piano and sing some of dad’s songs together and remember him. 💗🕯

Great reaction to one of the better rom-coms out there. If you're looking for a modern day rom-com that triggers a broader plateau of emotions, consider 'the Big Sick', starring Zoe Kazan, Kumail Nanjiani, Ray Romano and Holly Hunter. No blockbuster names, but the chemistry is there and.. it's 100% based on true events.

I love this movie and watched it at least once a month during the Pandemic. What's funny is that when this movie was made, this was really happening. Small bookstores were being eaten up by evil chain Barnes & Noble. I worked there at the time so we were REALLY insulted by that "I bet none of the people who work there have even read a book" line because most of us were either in college or becoming teachers/librarians or were retired teachers. We literally worked there because we loved books (it certainly wasn't for the money). The huge B&N store that I worked at back in 2000 is still there and it still has a used book department that used to be a computer program/game department and a huge café and children's department and big puffy chairs you could lounge in. But a lot of them are gone and smaller bookstores are popping back up. Majors & Quinn, an old school bookstore near where I live survived that B&N transition and is still surviving the Amazon transition, and still an amazing place to shop.

Yes, this older movie is the basis for this movie. Not to give the plot away, but the two lead characters are carrying on an anonymous correspondence by actual mail - you know, you make marks on a piece of paper, put an address and stamp on it, and it has to PHYSICALLY be moved to the other person, for those of you not old enough to have experience that. Both movies are also enemies-to-lovers, too.
The original movie also stars Frank Morgan, who played the Wizard of Oz in the 1939 movie.

But this time, I swear on ZuZu's petals, there was no shop around the corner anywhere in Comments. So I typed my info, and the next night checked back. And Mr. Ehrich, I don't know how this is even possible, but it was now swarming with Shops around the Corner. I checked the post times, and many preceded mine. I always thought the multiverse theory was hooey, but I think I accidentally hopped through an Everything, Everywhere all at once Comments section.

We've been together this whole time. And we were already so in love with each other before we even met in person. We would spend 2 or 3 hours every day just typing back and forth, helping each other with college homework. sometimes we talked on the phone. The main plot of this movie is based on the Jimmy Stewart classic Shop Around the Corner which was remade with some musical scenes included as the Judy Garland/Van Johnson movie In the Good Old Summertime (despite the name that one has some nice Christmas scenes towards the end.) In the original movie the shop is a small store selling a variety of merchandise. In the second movie it is a music store. The Judy Garland version is the best and I would encourage you to watch it. You've Got Mail, while entertaining and well made, is the weakest version and a twist on the others, trying to take the orginal idea of pen pals not realizing they know each other and modernize it. In both of the other movies our main characters do not have significant others and they actually work together. Both characters are on the same sort of economic level, although the male character is in a supervisorary position. There are less characters in Shop Around the Corner and In the Good Old Summertime and the plots are tighter. That said, its worth watching all three to compare and choose your favorite. The Judy Garland version is beautifully filmed and directed by the husband of Judy, Vincente Minnelli, and has a brief appearance by a very young Liza at the very end. It would be so nice if you would explore beyond the more recent movies.

Never seen this one, but I can still do a few trivia tidbits here and there.
    1. Released in 1998; directed by Nora Ephron; screenplay by Nora and Delia Ephron (real-life sisters).
    2. This is seen as a remake of two 1940s films - "The Shop Around the Corner" from 1940, and "In the Good Old Summertime" from 1949, which was originally inspired by a 1937 Hungarian play, "Parfumerie."
    3. Meg Ryan was married to Dennis Quaid (the NOAA scientist father from The Day After Tomorrow) for ten years, 1991-2001.
    4. Meg Ryan's full name is Margaret Mary Emily Anne Hyra, and she grew up in Fairfield, Connecticut.
    5. The original promotional website for the film stayed up until 2018. Many cited it as an example of overly simplistic web page design.
    6. The production company, Donner Productions, was founded by director Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon, Scrooged, and The Goonies), and his wife, Lauren Shuler Donner. Their breakout film was the movie "Dave," seen on the channel a few weeks ago.

I say Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail, in Sleepless in Seattle, and in Joe versus the Volcano are all in the same genre as Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally. . . (and for that matter, Bill Pullman and Sandra Bullock in While You Were Sleeping): they are all classic, hit, masterfully well-done romantic comedies, and you truly should see all five of them!
Tom Hanks' girlfriend was in Superman Returns with Kevin Spacey, Meg Ryan's boyfriend was in As Good As It Gets with Jack Nicholson and Sabrina with Harrison Ford. Her older saleswoman was the female lead of All in the Family. His dad starred in Tootsie with Dustin Hoffman and Jessica Lange, as well as 9 to 5 with Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin, and Jane Fonda.

I can fully understand how you believe what you said at 24:45 into this movie, however, some of us New Yorker's are quite courteous, understanding, and normal. It's just that we have so many people to deal with that we sometimes forget being normal. I worked not too far from that location, and even lived there as a young adult, then I realized what normal really is and focused on being that way all the time. Having worked at becoming an Eagle Scout when I was a boy trying to find my way, and having two caring parents, did help a LOT.

20:35 - it's not explained in the movie, only in the book, why it's "going to the mattresses". Italian mafias had rules about warfare. First of all, only men are a target; women and children could stay home and lead normal lives. While the men would find a secret apartment in the city, bare of any furniture usually and all they had were mattresses to sleep on as they planned and carried out attacks. Hence - "going to the mattresses".

I managed to find Zabars, the hot dog place, the intersection where they cross each other and the Cafe where they met (which was a gorgeous little hole in the wall cafe and I wish Id had the time to go in and get a coffee)

Never did the sing along around a piano but in college it was not unusual for the guitars to come out and start singing songs. American Pie was always a staple.

You've Got Mail is a remake of a film from the 1940s called The Shop Around the Corner starring James Stewart (one of my favourite actors) and is so worth watching.

Now you have to watch them in reverse. You've Got Mail (1998) > Sleepless in Seattle (1993) > Joe Versus The Volcano (1990)- all Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks Rom-Com collaborations. Joe Versus The Volcano is an underrated gem and a must-see. Sleepless in Seattle is a classic.

The tagline was he's trying to save Ryan's Privates. And they show the funeral scene where someone is trying to feel him up. Okay, not funeral.

Another person in this movie that you should get to know is Dabney Coleman that played Joe's dad. He is a great comedy actor. You can watch him in War Games, 9 to 5, and Short Time.

I’d like to recommend three other Meg Ryan movies…”City of Angels” and “Sleepless in Seattle” and “When a Man Loves a Woman”. Another Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan movie is “Joe vs the Volcano”. I’m really looking forward to your “When Harry Met Sally” reaction. There is one scene you will never forget 😂

Meg Ryan is wonderful, so glad you're getting to know her! Now...I'm going to beg that you watch another one of her movies that is my absolute favorite! "French Kiss" with Kevin Klein and Timothy Hutton! It's a RomCom set in Paris. Ryan and Klein's chemistry is perfect and the soundtrack is beautiful, including "La Vie En Rose" by Louis Armstrong! Thank you for considering it! ❤
