  • Munich, GERMANY - 1991 World Figure Skating Championships, Pairs' Free Skate - Natalia Mishkutenok and Artur Dmitriev of the Soviet Union skated a brilliant program here but failed to earn any 6.0s, probably because they were the first pair in the final group to skate. They, nevertheless, would win the Free Skate and would become the new World Champions.

This is truly one of the greatest skating performances ever. The choreography and original elements are stunning. I know Gordeeva and Grinkov are considered the greatest but this is the greatest artistic performance ever. The music and costumes were perfect for this. Just a total package.

This is a performance one can never forget and that one revisits over and over again. The program should have received 6.0 for artistry.

I was a sophomore at the University of California-Davis when this aired. I lived in the dorms and, in 1991, a lot of people did not have TV's as they were simply experiencing life as it happened. No internet, no social media, just people talking and being with other people. Anyway -- I knew that the '91 World Figure Skating Championships were going to be airing on NBC but I did not have a place to watch it. I took a chance that no one would be using the TV in the common area on the first floor so I rushed down there and claimed the TV and watched this broadcast first-run on NBC. I was the only one in the common area and I remember being surrounded by many dark windows ... as it was night-time ... and I remember that not many people in my 5-story dorm were out and about. So even though I was in a common area where up to 200 people could have potentially walked by and been noisy and disruptive ... no one walked by ... no one was present ... it was just me and the broadcast. And when this performance aired ... and I watched it on the first floor of Ryerson Hall on the day it was broadcast ... I remember feeling my soul soar with admiration and artistic actualization. It was the most beautiful thing I could recall seeing in figure skating. My jaw dropped open. The rest of the world fell away. It was truly magical. I still can remember that wellspring of warmth in my chest in seeing it and that is not a memory I've forgotten even after almost 28 years!! Truly awesome.

Absolutely stunning.....Pure, clean, artistic excellence. They were low-balled by the corrupt judging as usual. M&D are Number 1 along with G&G as the best pair skaters EVER!!! No one even came close to them. This program was second to none!!

When people talk on TV about the most memorable moments in the history of figure skating, this performance doesn't really get mentioned. This, to me, might be the most memorable performance of the history of pairs skating (Tai and Randy's 1979 Worlds performance probably comes in close 2nd).
Everything from the choreography, the music, the costuming, unison, the projection, the originality to the cleanliness of the contents all seemed perfect. Even when other pairs deliver an error-free skate, they almost never have the warmth and commitment seen here.

I totally agree and feel the judges never them credit that they deserved. Seriously, no 6 at all??? 5 8 from the Japanese judge for artistic impression??? Give me a break.

У них все программы великие. Рахманинов не менее, а, возможно, более великая программа. У них нагло украли золото в пользу любимцев ф. к элиты США и России.

Thanks, 3Avel1996. Artus Dmitriev is one of the all time greats. He proves that men can do balletic moves and not look like sissies. So powerful, and yet he treats his partners gently. One thing I always loved about him is that he presented his partners so well. Natalia often had problems with this program, but not today. Unforgettable. Demands repeated viewings to appreciate all of the many elements.

Its too bad they skated so early they deserved 59 for tech and 6.0. for artistry. The Canadians are more dynamic in their moves and have harder lifts. But the Russians have speed, flow, perfection, passion and were clean. Beautiful program
