This was indeed the Golden Age of Ice dancing. And this unbelievable performance of Duchesnay and Duchesnay, which mesmerized me more than 30 years ago, still does it every time I watch it again. A great couple with a great choreography by Christopher Dean.
So much time has been spent since 1990, but my impression after more than 30 years is always the same: a unique, touching, impressive moment of pure art! Every time I watch this dance I feel goose bumps
One of the most heart breaking, impressive, beautiful. powerful ever free skates. Gold Medal worthy - well- I think so. It sure is the one I can watch over and over again.
I was very young when I watched it, but I can say - I never saw something like this again. It was so perfect, so different, so special. They are still more modern with this dance than the most skaters today.
Isabelle and Paul Duchesnay were the most powerful, ahead of their time ice dancers in the history of the sport. I never get tired of periodically watching their performances. They were the best ever; futuristic! I hope they are coaches or teachers of ice dancing so this now generation can learn from their wisdom. The Duchesnays RULE!
I was in Halifax at the event that evening. When the Duchenays finished skating, I truly was scared, because the screaming, cheering and clapping was so loud - I really thought the roof was going to cave in. You can't tell from the video, but it was so loud you couldn't even hear someone speak next to you. One of the finest achievements and moments in figure skating history
I'm jealous!! I would have loved to see this live, although I did get to see the Duchesnay's skate this on the Tom Collins skating tour at the time. Paul was one of the most mesmerizing male skaters ever....
Always thought it was the perfect proof of Canadian mediocrity that they were rejected by Skate Canada and so they went to skate for France-who presumably were more comfortable with iconoclastic brilliance.
I am not generally a jealous person, but speaking as someone who has avidly followed skating for over 50 years, I am jealous of anyone who was there to see the Duchesnays’ performance of Missing that night. I revisit this performance at least yearly. It is my favorite ice dance of all time.
A truly unforgettable routine, where sport transcends into art and emotion. So many iconic moments from this dance are emblazoned on my memory... the subdued beginning... the intensity building... the spectacular end pose. Apart from the Torvill & Dean Bolero, this is the only ice dance that has made a lasting impression on me. Ever.
It's great opinion, Willem. I agree with you from the first to the last word. "...sport transcends into art...". To this sentence can not be anything to add. These are really unique moments in sport. T&D, D&D - greatest memorable couples. All the best for you.
It’s because this routine was created by C. Dean :) he made it memorably and transcendent, as their Bolero was, and as all the routines he created before and after, and danced with Jayne :) and he danced this theme too, (in a bit different way, as in the first part of choreography he adapter for Duschesnay) with Jayne of course, you can find it on RUclips ..
I remember falling in love with this performance 30 years ago and I am still watching it over and over again with the same pleasure and excitement, this is great dance, absolutely awesome !
I remember seeing this 25 years ago and was in disbelief if what I was watching was real. It was for the first and last time when watching figure skating brought tears into my eyes, and I watched many championships and Olympic games since...
Stunning choreography. Dean's work is genius. I watched Torvill and Dean perform Missing and saw mention of the Duchesnay pair skating the number. That brought me here. My mother used to say eat your vegetables before dessert. I never could get that right.
Yes! I came here from the mention in the T&D version. I agree that the Duschenay’s performance was less technically perfect than some of T&D’s. They weren’t as perfectly in sync, for instance. But I loved the increased tempo in the Duschenay version, and the passion they displayed, along with the additional lifts (both of these to accommodate various requirements in the amateur competition, I’m sure.) The increasing tempo along with the choreography and the passionate skating really ramps up the sense of anxiety, which I think makes this performance rival the original T&D version. It’s extremely effective in portraying the message. So grateful to be able to watch these performances here on RUclips. Simply stunning. Thank you to this channel for posting these. They are treasures.
Just finished watching the 2018 Olympic free dance and for some reason I thought of this amazing program. There’s been nothing like it before or sense. Brilliant.
It was 28 years ago when I first watched this dynamic pair dance this piece. I have never forgotten how beautiful this dance was. Very artistic and just plain beautiful
I remember watching this "live", at least I think it was, and being totally enthralled by this performance. I was also glad the commentators were silent for the entire performance. They let us enjoy it !!
I remember watching this for this first time as though it was yesterday - me and my mum were mesmerised by them and the music - so unique and fresh. A routine etched on my memory.
I saw this performance live and in person from Seat 10, Row O, Section 27 of the Halifax Metro Centre, Friday, March 9, 1990... We cheered ourselves hoarse. I watch it now all these years later and it still makes me smile.

This pair of etched in my memory. My father loved them. They were original, exotic, unique. although they did not win gold, I still remember them. They were like a breath of fresh air. Something from which you can not take your eyes. And this beautiful music.
I've been a figure skater in the past...have watched this sport improve over the years on TV ever since (over 20 years now) and to this day I still think these folks were and still are the best ever! Not to take anything away from today's great skaters but Paul and Isabelle where just on a different level. So fluid in their moves, in congruity and continuity with each other while travelling accross the ice with great speed throughout the whole Choreography. You could feel the emotion of their theme coming through Paul and Isabelle like no other, this from the beginning until the end of their routine. They were always pleasant to watch to say the least, even to people unknown to the figure skating world. I really miss them, and their dancing style!
I often read that Russian skaters were technically better than Duchesnay. I agree, but...I remember many names of Russians skaters but I don't remember any of their dances. Dance is not a technique but great ability to convey feelings. Besides the Russian danced as if they wanted to save the world with their dance. Duchesnay just danced, with passion, fire and heart. They wanted to tell something the audience and they said. By the way - Mr Paul Duchesnay was (and is) the best-looking skaters of all skaters. He seems to be very humble, pleasant and sincere person. And I say yes, IF one half of an ice dancing pair skates like a hockey player, they should not be on the podium. IF. That's not the case here, truely not. I've honestly never seen an ice dancer who would skate like a hockeyer.
Brilliant. For all my gripes about what an unbalanced team they were (Paul clearly a much stronger skater), this program had a good balance of the hard moves. Paul is still doing a greater share of the hard stuff but so many sections of that routine have Isabelle skating and pivoting on one foot. That sequence at the end, where she is on one foot in and out of a lift before going into that final pose: fabulous.
Was in tears, so moved when I saw this the first time. Young at that time, and now so many years later I keep reliving this emotional dance thanks to RUclips. 😍
Wow! So beautiful. I've never seen this program and it brings a tear to my eye. Gorgeous. I wish more teams would skate to South American music more often.Very seldomly used.
Every time I see this performance I cry, it just reminds me of what happened in my country when I was a child. and I witnessed it. I'm originally from Chile and this performance was perfect, Btw as a Chilean Canadian, I am proud of you both.
They wanted to use Art and their political freedom to say something about The South American Military Dictatorship (Junta) - lots of people just disappeared, were murdered or were imprisoned for no good reason. They skated with their hearts and that's why it's so compelling. To me, this routine is saying that there is still beauty, culture and innocence in South America and that these people deserve to be remembered ... And I love how she skips like a deer at 1:42
Most of the disappeared were people under 30; very sad. This is my first time watching this wonderful couple and it brought tears to my eyes. I was a teenager myself when this horrible things happened in South America. I can say I survived two dictatorships (Chile and Argentina). Hugs and peace from Canada.
I don't care how many medals of which colour a skater has collected and how many years they've been touring. I just love this passionate, moving performance, it's captivating and touches my heart. The Duchesnays were the perfect skaters for this theme, IMO. They conveyed the emotion, that's why the audience always responded so enthusiastically to their performances. It was a great time for ice dancing, then in the early 90s.
Lovely to see again. Having watched most of Christopher Dean's performances with Jayne Torville its easy to spot his creative input into this performance.
Beautiful, we live in Scotland and I remember fondly getting to stay up late with my Mum and we sat in her bed eating munchies and rooting for them. This just blew us away. So beatuiful and haunting. Thank you for uploading!
This has got to be the most original innovative captivating dance of all time. And given the current judging system, it's not just improbable but impossible that anybody should come anywhere near this. Just outstanding.
This was one of the most beautiful and emotional things I`ve seen in my live. Therefore after so many years - I still remember it! For me this is a dance for the eternity.
Glad to hear I'm not the only slightly crazy person who has been watching this video for years. Thank god for RUclips - I just love it, it's the best ice skating routine I have ever seen. Thank you dogsbodygrooming - I have been wondering for the past 23 years who this music was by - mistry solved!
@@TD-sl3ee the first one is from Ecuador. An Albazo named Dolencias. It has some variations. From a sad one played by Inti Illimani and some others artists. And a more joyfull interpreted by colombian singer Claudia de Colombia.
I remember the frustration at the corrupt judges as I watched these two skate incredible programs. But what I like to keep with me is the intense thrill I felt every time they stepped on the ice because I knew I was going to be watching something exciting.
I have looked for this and them for years on RUclips. I kept spelling their name wrong. Then this popped up in my suggestions. What joy. They were memorable obviously. They captured my attention 28 years ago. Thank you for up loading
I was swept away by this when I was 15, obsessed with it really :) I learned to play this music on my keyboard... But now when I watch it at 43, although it still pulls the same primordial strings, it seems so imperfect, with lots of moves unfinished and unpolished. And they look exhausted at the end! Still, this dance will ALWAYS be very special to me. Greetings from Croatia!
I have the same ... but watch Torvill and Dean performing this routine, recreated in reality for ice by Dean himself for Isabelle and Paul... you will have the greatness of this brilliant choreography and the technical excellence and deep emotion and artistry of T&D :) but maybe you already watched it?
@Trudtje - I wouldn't be able to describe it better. I am overwhelmed and choke up nearly EVERY time I see it. And I have seen it at least 50 times... One of the greatest moments in sports history, ever. This one will last forever.
I am not a big fan of figure skating as a whole, but Ice Dance has always seemed more of an artform to me - no showy stuff like jumps or throws, just artistry - and this performance (took me ages to find it as I could not remember the name of the pair) was where my young brain actually got that. I just really enjoy the storytelling of ice dance.
Absolutely amazing 😍 as a South American myself thank you for honoring all the victims of violence, the victims that were never seen again or found. Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Torvill & Dean in 1984 / Duchesnay & Duchesnay in 1988 - 1992 / Savchenko & Massot in 2018...Choreographie u. a. von Christopher Dean...Sportmomente für die Ewigkeit !!!
Lovely performance. The Duchesnays were great. I always enjoyed watching their performances. Torvill & Dean's original version of this routine is also brilliant, of course. :)
The Duschenays were amazing here and brought in the idea (with Chris Dean who started it with Bolero) that ice dance can be gut-wrenching and dramatic. Many teams (especially during the Anissina/Peizerat era) have copied that style to mixed and sometimes groan-worthy results. That said, I think it takes a real keen eye and refined taste to appreciate Klimova/Ponomarenko prior to 1991. Once you start gaining an understanding of ice skating and what real difficulty is (not just in blade work but in skating skills, transitions, dance holds, changing positions, patterns, etc.) and dance (body line, positioning, movement, execution, connection with one's partner, trust to do very risky moves that is dependent on one another) and what it takes to make the truly difficult look so effortless and beautiful, you'll realize just how much better K/P were than their competitors from 1985-1992 and how underappreciated they were. They were a masterclass of everything that is important and truly beautiful about ice dance. If you lack that understanding, then you may find K/P prior to 1991 boring. I suspect a lot of people actually didn't watch or really pay close attention to K/P's performance here and before 1990 worlds but just accepted their opinion that K/P were boring or brought nothing to ice dance (so not true). IMO, the seasons following this really showed the Duschenays' weakness as artists as they could not replicate their artistic triumph here (there's only so many ways Paul could use Isabelle as a prop and they relied too much on Chris Dean's creativity. When it ran dry, it revealed that they weren't that special). Even when they won Worlds the following year, it was far from a consensus, and they had to copy Underhill/Martini for their Blues OD and re-use Missing for the FD with re-arranging their Mirror FD choreography. I also think K/P were so superior in skill that they could easily do this routine (may not have been as successful as D/D with the performance art aspect though they showed they had the chops to do interpretive/emotional dances the following two seasons) in terms of execution whereas I have no doubt the Duschenays could not even attempt K/P's FD (or any of their FDs) because of the pure skill level involved.
you bothered to read it? i can summarize it on just one sentence, you all are stupid, i am the only one who is smart. just saved you a couple of minutes of valuable time of reading through that pompous drivel. you are welcome.

One of The BEST innovative and technical performance ever in a free dance. Bravo!
This was indeed the Golden Age of Ice dancing. And this unbelievable performance of Duchesnay and Duchesnay, which mesmerized me more than 30 years ago, still does it every time I watch it again. A great couple with a great choreography by Christopher Dean.

Wow! So beautiful. I've never seen this program and it brings a tear to my eye. Gorgeous. I wish more teams would skate to South American music more often.Very seldomly used.
I have always remembered this fantastic dance from the Duchesnays. It's great to watch it, again, on youtube.
Thank you Christopher Dean !
Isabel and Christopher were married for two years
@@64MUsonic yes, and divorce after...but why ?they are a beautiful couple Isabelle and Chris, and a fantastic trio with a job in ice 😢
chills! the best free dance I've ever seen!
I thought they never received what they should. They are the best ever because they were so creative and so brave to tell stories.
Ihre Meisterkür 😊🤗👏🙏👍 Einzigartig.
Saw this years ago…love it the same today. Raw abandon and passion on ice. Such a powerful skate!
I was there. It was unbelievably moving. I'll never forget it.
Oh, I agree 100% with you!!
Simply breathtaking. After all these years....The only dance on ice that brings me tears every time. Every time
One of the best programs i've ever seen!
Just amazing and outstanding the coreo! Congratulations for this performance to them and thanks for share it!
I love this wonderfull ice dancers. You never see anyone like that in over 30 years.
This still the best ice dance skating performance ever❤️
i AGREE 100 %
the second music is "Sikuriadas" by Inti Illimani from the album "Flight Of The Condor" or by Incantation from album "Panpipes from the Andes"
Александр Йес what about the first?
Ecuadorian song
@@TD-sl3ee the first one is from Ecuador. An Albazo named Dolencias. It has some variations. From a sad one played by Inti Illimani and some others artists. And a more joyfull interpreted by colombian singer Claudia de Colombia.
@@TD-sl3ee "Dolencias " it's the name of the song
Bravissimi e originalissimi!
We are the same age and I have the same sentiment. Greetings from America !!
@@ft-je3rs Helloooo :))
I have the same ... but watch Torvill and Dean performing this routine, recreated in reality for ice by Dean himself for Isabelle and Paul... you will have the greatness of this brilliant choreography and the technical excellence and deep emotion and artistry of T&D :) but maybe you already watched it?
Best ice dance ever to my eyes loved it then love it now. My all time favourite
Sorry, I cannot speak Spanish
Could you please write the name of this song. It is amazing. Gracias
@@jansetkoc8967 Dolencias (Pains)
Perfect after so many years i still watching it staying speechless
Still in memory after all those years... A real class act. Isabelle and Paul deserved SO much more....
But this routine is HISTORY
I totally agree with you Willem, I couldn't have expressed it better! I was 16 and remained flashed at the tv admiring those fab brothers..
Just perfect... still loving it!
@Trudtje - I wouldn't be able to describe it better. I am overwhelmed and choke up nearly EVERY time I see it. And I have seen it at least 50 times... One of the greatest moments in sports history, ever. This one will last forever.
Best ice dance to my eyes ever loved it then …. And love it now. My favourite of all time
I am not a big fan of figure skating as a whole, but Ice Dance has always seemed more of an artform to me - no showy stuff like jumps or throws, just artistry - and this performance (took me ages to find it as I could not remember the name of the pair) was where my young brain actually got that.
I just really enjoy the storytelling of ice dance.
Well done, Christopher Dean - choreographer supreme. This pair are good.
Semplicemente fantastici... Unici... Indimenticabili!!!
That was one of the most exhausting performances . I'm tired.
I am crying out....... what a artist work!
Absolutely amazing 😍 as a South American myself thank you for honoring all the victims of violence, the victims that were never seen again or found. Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Superb combination of technical merit, artistic impression and the beautiful music of Inti llimani:The Deuchesnays...
Wow this is better than the recent winners at the Sochi Olympics....(no disrespect intended )
No disrespect but I don't agree with you at all. Davis & White's Scherezade was a masterpiece in its own class.
This is one of my favorite ice dances. I thought it should have gotten tens across the board! I love Christopher Dean too!
Torvill & Dean in 1984 / Duchesnay & Duchesnay in 1988 - 1992 / Savchenko & Massot in 2018...Choreographie u. a. von Christopher Dean...Sportmomente für die Ewigkeit !!!
This was amazing!
+SDoesNotKnow Thanks for the lecture you dullard
You're welcome. Have fun watching Eurovision.
you bothered to read it? i can summarize it on just one sentence, you all are stupid, i am the only one who is smart. just saved you a couple of minutes of valuable time of reading through that pompous drivel. you are welcome.
Took you long enough to respond. I see you can't debate the points.
unlike you, I don't sit by the computer waiting for people to respond. And your inanity needs no refutation.
