In Japanese culture, the soul of every single dead will be called a ghost. If they still got unfulfilled wishes, they will stay in the human world and cannot leave. In that case, my theory is that each hand of the ghost devil represents a ghost, and countless hands represent countless ghosts, which together form the concept of the ghost devil. Then the hand that holds out the cigarette is Himeno's ghost.

The devils are the manifestation of the FEAR of a specific thing, not the manifestation of the thing itself, no? The death devil is not death itself, but the fear of death. Darkness devil is the fear of darkness, not darkness itself. Ghost devil is the fear of ghosts, not ghosts as an entity. Now, these devils do take on characteristics of the thing they come to represent, darkness devil having a lot to do with darkness, and all that, but still, they are the representation of the fear, not the thing

①The flashback scene is drawn from Aki's point of view, but it wasn't just Aki's memories, but Himeno also treasured the "promised cigarette." It's such a beautiful story.
②The meaning of "easy revenge" is "Don't let revenge affect your heart. You'll lose your composure when you can't see your surroundings. Aki, take care of yourself."
③ Aki was able to recall the characteristics and weaknesses of the "ghost demon" revealed by Himeno in the past through the message written on the cigarette.
④The reason why "ghost's hand" had "promised cigarette" is because in episode 8, Himeno said she would give all of herself to "ghost devil"? Isn't it because not only the body but also wishes and "cherished items" were included in the contract? ⑤Himeno died and became a ghost, and she became part of the "ghost demon". Or the "ghost demon" who knew he was fighting Aki. Because Aki recalled memories with Himeno in fear of being killed. That's how she gave Aki the "promised cigarette".
That's the thing. This whole series is like some chocolate. It's 99% bitter but because of that 1% sugar makes it so sweet.
You kinda got it right about the “country mouse or city mouse” thing, it’s a theme relevant to to the next arc, so it’s more meant for the manga readers to get exited by, the person who appeared during that scene is a new character

I think the implication is that since the Ghost Devil "sees" through fear rather than sight she didn't know she was fighting Aki until he got scared enough. Once she realized it was him she let him go, though I couldn't tell you if it was purely out of sympathy or because of a deal Himeno made. Also makes sense that she traded a hand for one of Himeno's eyes, I guess... since she's got a lot of the former but none of the latter.
I got a different idea, hevwas afraid fighting the devil so it could see him, but the flashback showed him accepting death and not fearing death anymore. Then it lost sight of him.
@@neisan92 Aki's entire character at this point is devoted to him not wanting to die until he gets revenge. That's like the only fear he has left. As Ghost was getting closer and closer to killing him he got more and more afraid. There would also be no reason for Ghost to give him the cigarette if she couldn't see him anymore. My guess is that Himeno's contract involved Aki's safety and once Ghost realized it was him she was bound by that deal.
If I'm not mistaken in the manga it was more clear, himeno put a clause for the ghost devil getting all of her, not hurting aki and giving the cigarette. At least is what I remember, it's been a while since I've read it, could be wrong
@@lucasvhinever2817 Based on some of the contracts that have been revealed (specifically that Devils can also take intangible things) I can see how Himeno giving Ghost "all of her" might also have included her feelings for Aki.
I figured she gave the ghost devil "her all" to make a deal to save aki, which the ghost devil accepted.... so when the ghost devil realized it was about to kill aki, it stopped because that would go against her contract to save aki

Was surprised to see the Spider Fiend was in the movie theater. Thought they were just a low detail background character until now.

I was so blown away by this adaptation, they covered much more ground than I expected and added so much glorious extra detail while making almost no sacrifices.
The bookending of the season with the door dream was an excellent choice... and oh my, what a tease to close it all out..!

Remember, Himeno's contract with Ghost was she gave everything she had to Ghost, and vice versa, that's why the Ghost Devil which Aki fights is half Ghost and half Himeno's soul, that's why it gives him the "Easy Revenge" blunt so he puts aside his revenge to Gun Devil for a moment and kill it/her instead to make him accomplish something for his vendetta (avenging Himeno). It's a subtle moment that doesn't need to over-explained like most dramatic Shonen scenes do nowadays, yes, I'm looking at you, Tanjiro
keep in mind that himeno trying to sleep with denji was on alcohol and in a total blackout. she even mention when she was sober she glad that nothing happened because she would go to jail by that. don't make her acts when on effect of alcohol her whole personality lmao
I'm sorry but as much as I like Himeno, being drunk is not at all a valid justification of her actions. It was wrong whether she was sober or not and she absolutely had enough control to know certain boundaries

pretty sure he can't or perhaps couldn't differentiate her normal act and when she was drunk. he probably forgot himeno literally said she could get arrested by doing that with a minor. she regret it. I'm not justifying her action with denji but some people have low tolerance of alcohol and can be a totally different person when they are drunk.

The thing that killed Sawatari was the Snake Devil. It's harder to see in the anime because it's constantly moving, but it's made out of intertwined human arms.
There is alot of set up done in season 1 some more apparent than others and alot of questions raised this season. All of this is done so that the pay off done towards the end of the series, which is much closer than you might expect, is absolutely amazing. To give you an idea just how short CSM is, right now season 1 ended on chapter 37, the major pay off is done from chapter 74 to chapter 84. Those 10 chapters are, for me, practically perfect.
Leaks are going around that a movie and season 2 are already in pre-production. It is safe to assume that CSM part 1, which is 97 chapters, will be finished in that movie and season 2. If season 2 adapts its content correctly, we could be seeing one of the best anime seasons of all time. It is truly incredible what lays in store for the CSM anime.
So the door will be a continuing thing that we first saw in episode 1. The bit at the end is a teaser.
Just manga reader will understand the credits.

It can be a tad hard to translate a manga into a 12-episode season because ofc the manga wasn't meant to stop there, so it makes sense the way they ended it and I actually felt they would end it there for now.
Yeah agreed. The manga never had to pause like the anime did, it just kept going past Katana Man arc as it was intended to. Makes it quite difficult to give each anime season a satisfying conclusion. It's unfortunately just gonna end up feeling open-ended at a point where it wasn't necessarily supposed to stop
Chainsaw Man's finale was absolutely breathtaking and incredible. I can't wait for more episodes and to see my favorite manga scenes animated...

@@mythos4 nah 日本刀(nihontou) or 刀(katana) are more commonly use. Samurai sword is public safety's referred name in temporary.
"Easy Revenge" refers to seizing what's in your grasp. Celebrating small victories. The Country Mouse & The City Mouse is a reference to the book that Taiyou, (Aki's brother) was reading on the day he died.
I do think that was Himeno's hand. She did traded one of her eyes in contract with ghost devil and everytime she calls Ghost there's always one hand that appears. So when the scene where she said to Ghost devil she's giving everything she has, that's when the whole body of Ghost appears. So I'm guessing that hand is what Himeno is in contract with and she used it for safe keeping the cigarette. Probably part of the contract was if she dies the Ghost devil automatically gives Aki the cigarette.
Yeah, this is about as well as I think the finale could have gone- solid, satisfying, but not explosive. The anime is at a significant structural disadvantage here, in that it's an adaptation (and a fairly close adaptation at that- there are additions, there are (surprisingly few) omissions, but it's almost panel-for-shot for large swathes of runtime), and the manga it's adapting is by and large an extremely terse, tightly plotted piece without major mid-story climaxes that you can make good end-of-season finales from. It just is not structured for television.
And this arc is probably the one that is best suited for it. I'm looking at the rest of the manga, and I think the best bet is either a single two-cour season or another one-cour season with a movie that comes either before or after it?? I don't envy MAPPA there.
On the scenes at the end of the episode: the one with Denji at the door is how this arc ends in the manga, and I think its narrative function is to undercut that weird upbeatness you were talking about there. The scene after that, with the new character- that's pure fanbait, they just shoved that in there cause it would make fans go wild. And it absolutely worked, I am fucking pumped to see that character in motion, she fucking rules and all her scenes fucking rule. Frankly, Chainsaw Man? Just gets better as it goes. Every new arc is better than the last one and makes the ones that come before it better in retrospect.
As far as Katana Man's physical abilities go- what I think is going on here (and this isn't spoilers, this is just my intuition), is that he's especially fast because katanas are portrayed as being very fast weapons in popular culture. I.e., he's got that flash-cut move because it's very common for katana guys in anime to do flash-cut stuff, so the devil inherits that and KM's general speed is an extension of that. But again, that's just what I'm intuiting.
Chainsaw fun facts: The original hand-cranked chainsaw was invented and used by two Scottish doctors John Aitken and James Jeffray in the 1780s. Bernhard Heine who designed another version of the hand-cranked chainsaw in 1830. Andreas Stihl invented the first electric chainsaw for cutting down trees in 1926. Emil Lerp claims the title for the invention of the first gas chainsaw in 1926 - the Dolmar Model A.
There is a compromise if you don't want to wait for part 2 but don't want to get spoiled: Fujimoto has a whole bunch of other work and it's all pretty interesting. He also tends to remix and reference previously used elements so you can have fun recognising some future stuff without actually being spoiled. Firepunch is the big actual series that's the closest thing to CSM but I also have a soft spot for a one shot called Goodbye Eri - it shows off his knack for messy melodrama

There is a Japanese word for chainsaw, and it's "Dendou nokogiri (電動のこぎり)" or electrically powered saw, but its used less than just "chainsaw", especially in younger generations I think.

Please avoid spoilers or reading the manga, cause it is impactful and incredible but I feel that it will take out that shock factor or amusement of everything that happens by the time the anime adapts it, cause I wish I hadn’t read the manga
Depends, I read the manga after watching the anime and I did not regret it. Sure, it would be cool to wipe those memories out when S2 arrives but the manga is great on its own and I'm sure MAPPA will deliver it just as Fujimoto intended it
This season "finale" is only final in terms of the anime. The story isn't really at a point where anything too major happens yet, so that's why this episode may seem like a lackluster finale.
Ref the leg-chainsaw. Look at ep11 training session. Denji's lower pants legs were ripped - tipping off that he had been practicing that move.

As a manga reader, I can safely say that season 1 is definitely the introduction season. Season 2 is the meat of the first arc and why this show was super hype back then. A lot of answer are given after this.

Also Himeno's contract in death was that the ghost devil protect Aki.... so there may be something to that.

Love your reactions! Just wanted to add my 2 cents on your feelings about the ending. The reason why the ending felt light hearted is in part because in the manga this encounter isn't the official end of an 'arc' as you might think. The end of Arc 1 only came to an end earlier this year. So it's very long. They could get probably 3 seasons out official Arc 1. You can think of this stopping point they chose as a small reprieve in the source material. In actuality the story flows immediately into the next encounter where basically the stakes keep getting upped to the very end of official Arc 1.
Season 1 is what many consider the weakest portion of the story in arc 1. That's not to say it's bad at all. It's great, but there's a clear lack of personal feelings invested from Denji in the situation he finds himself in. He more acts out of duty from his job. That significantly changes going forward which is why the material so far is often dubbed the, relatively, 'weakest' part.
I hope that explains why the ending of this season felt relatively light-hearted.

the series has a good ending only because it's not an ending this part doesn't even fit half the chapters of the first part of the manga (it has two) so let's say we're almost halfway through the first season

I would say don't read the manga. It's great. I read the whole thing in like 5 days. But the anime is so cool, I wish I could experience it without knowing what's going to happen.

I like to think that the Ghost Devil was just down bad for Himeno like how the Fox Devil "only lets the hot ones call on her head". Now that I think about it, even the Leech Devil was gonna let Denji go, standing in the gore of her boyfriend/husband he'd just killed because she thought he was cute. If someone decided to take a couple for the team, I feel like a lot of the devil problems would be solved easier lmao

This series is so unhinged, that when this happens in the manga I actually cried. Because, in this twisted fucking series, this IS a requiem for Himeno. For me, this is actually a really emotional scene, and I'm fully aware of how warped that is and I love that about this series.
I really think Fujimoto Tatsuki might be the best mangaka out there.
OH, and about expecting it to be miserable - Fujimoto is INCREDIBLE about subverting those normal twists and tropes. Even if something is kind of similar, he makes sure to do it in a way that hasn't been done to death and back. So if you're expecting something tragic, there's a good chance you'll get a nice moment out of it. And sometimes vice versa, but not necessarily because THAT would be playing into tropes and expectations.
Idk what Easy Revenge means... Maybe it's like the saying about the best revenge is a life well lived/full life.
Or I could be completely off base. Idk about 1/4 of this episode... lol.

After seeing the episode i say "F I can't wait for second season" and i blasted the manga version and for the love of Jesus, this first season its like a little teaser of all.
Himeno was kind of a bad person in some ways but frankly doing bad things doesn't prevent you from doing good things and those things may very well not be related at all. Also, it was mentioned that being a bit broken in the brain was better for being a devil hunter and as an example of that Himeno wasn't right in the head, not everything she did makes sense on a normal scale of morality.

The tease at the end is absolutely for manga readers, but it's kind of an odd choice as I'm sure it is just confusing for the majority of the anime onlys. Great season, hope it's back as soon as is logistically possible without melting the poor animators into jelly.
At the pace the chapters are being adapted, season 2 will cover the Bomb Girl arc and the International Assassins Arc (aka the Santa Calus arc, Darkness Devil arc, or Crossbow Woman arc). That means that season 3 will cover the Gun Devil arc and the Control Devil arc.
If they decide to continue after that point, season 4 will then follow the Justice Devil arc, the Eternity Devil's resurrection arc, and all the currently ongoing stuff with the Four Horsemen and the Fake Chainsaw Man.
And that's not counting whether or not they'll decide to adapt Fire Punch (another manga by Fujimoto)
After credits are just season 2 hints really not important for you yet. Also you need to know that Part 1 (in the Manga) didn't end at this point in the story, which is why there are so many open threads.

Also if you DO want to read the manga, it's almost frame for frame and season 1 ends about half way through volume 5. So as long as you stop and don't read more you could experience it.

This is the most, if not the ONLY sane arc in the whole manga volume 1
Himeno became the ghost devil. She could only see it was Aki once he was actually scared because it sees fear. She stopped fighting him and let him kill her, freeing her.
The opening has been the same the whole time you just didnt know the characters or context, now yall are at the end of the season you notice all the intricacies.

Honestly if you were a fan of the anime then I’d highly recommend reading the manga. It feels different enough to where it doesn’t completely ruin the experience, especially since they’re going with such a unique tone than expected with this adaptation. The story also takes some pretty wild turns so you’d be in for a ride
And it’s gonna take forever for the anime to catch up I think
the first season covered 38 episodes, or 4 ½ volumes, so if the second season covers the same, it would end at chapter 76, which is a massive but also inconsequential cliffhanger, but they aren't gonna cover less material, so let's go with volumes instead, since Volume 1 only had 7 chapters to Volume 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11's 9 chapters. So if the second season covered the second half of volume 5 and all of volume 6 (1 ½), it would finish reze's arc, and if they then did volume 7 & 8 (3 ½), it would finish the assassin's arc, and then add volume 9 (4 ½), it would finish the gun devil arc. meaning they would almost complete Part 1 of the manga by season 2. let's do the same with season 3, volume 10 & 11 collectively cover all of the control devil arc, finishing Part 1, but 18 chapters isn't enough for a whole season, so maybe a second cour for season 2, unless they dive into Part 2 of the manga for season 3, which only has 1 volume with 6 chapters and would completely mess up the pacing, Chainsaw Man Season 2 would finish the first part of the Manga.
unless they turn the second half of volume 5 and all of volume 6 into a movie, which means volume 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11 would be adapted to season 2, meaning a longer season not separated by cours.
