Water Drop Photography Tutorial with Pluto Trigger

- In this macro photography tutorial, we are learning water drop photography using the Pluto Trigger and the Pluto Valve as well as our brand new Flash Lighting Arms. This setup is quite extensive, so stick with us whilst we explain!

Colliding two water drops in mid-air while timing the camera and flash to trigger at the exact moment they hit, is no easy task. We have the answer though. With a water drop kit like the Pluto Trigger and the corresponding valve, timing the water drops is made much simpler. We ended up using milk for most of the shots, but this is just as easy with water, if a little less consistent.

It's not the easiest subject to try if you're just getting started, but if you have the patience then the results are certainly worth it!. Maybe work up to the water drops from some less elaborate setups like oil & water (there's a video on that on our channel too)

Great tutorial! I hang a plumb line from the nozzle to figure out where the droplet will land and focus on the point where the bob touches the water. I hope that's helpful.
I'll be trying this again soon enough, I didn't have too much trouble focusing, but the plumb line is a good idea so I may take your suggestion for next time!
Good luck with that Pluto trigger. I've had weeks struggling with the dropper and I'm now on my fourth dropper. Turn my attention to doing some laser triggering and the laser only works intermittently. MIOPS for me I think.

Didn’t hear you say to put your camera to manual focus after you get the focus set on your drops. You don’t want the camera to try to focus with every shot. Great video though. I got the Pluto trigger for Christmas and haven’t set up the valve yet. Looks like a good day project. I’ll have to check out your flash setup. Subscribed and hopefully you do more tutorials regarding how to creatively use the Pluto trigger. It’s a very powerful little tool. Thanks it’s the best tutorial I’ve seen on doing this.
Thanks David, I sometimes forget that auto focus is even a feature, all my macro lenses are manual only so i don't mention it often. Very good point though for those that might not think of it! xanthan gum works well for reservoir liquid, mix with water let sit overnight. @firstmanphotography has a video using it. cheers. great tutorial.
I have some thickening agents to try for the next video. Colours too :)
I did this some years ago...I used UV paint of different colours and photographed under VU black light
I mark the drop point with a penny under the water just above the drop point and a tiny piece of blue tack with a match sticking above the water. Focus on the match head gives good results. If you want to repeat the shot you really need to let the water settle completely in the bowl. Even leaning on the table causes the water surface to move about.
That sounds like a great method of getting your focus right Rob, keeps your hands free to focus. Letting the water settle is another good tip!
IR Emitter is that essential part.

It does depend on the height of the drop, everyone's settings will be different.

A few questions if I may-
You put your Adaptalux light at 100% power. Isn't that also the longest duration for the flash? Wouldn't shooting at a lesser power be a shorter duration and therefore a sharper image?
I use a machine also (SplashArt Kit MkII) but I found that using a shorter duration flash yielded sharper images. (1/64th and 1/128th power worked best)
Maybe you could use multiple arms to get it bright enough as one may or may not be bright enough?
You made a good point about milk being a cool medium to use. It lends itself to being effected by those cool flash colors! (can you tell that I REALLY need to get an Adaptalux soon?!)

The power on the flash actually converts to speed, so 100% is max speed not max power. You're right in that faster flashes make for sharper splashes! Most of these were taken with only one flash arm too, so one is enough, two is interesting for different effects

Hi, I wanted to know at what height you recommend placing the solenoid valve in relation to the water container. Is there a relationship between height and App parameters? What parameters do you recommend for both single shots and collisions?
Hi Max, it's impossible to tell you the best parameters as the height is a huge variable in the settings for the app. Every small change will require the settings to be tweaked, the only way to figure it out is to do it yourself for your own setup.

nice tuto ! i want to try it :-) do you have a link for the arm ? with your iphone parameters, what is the distance between the output of valve and the water surface ? is it safe for cheap pluto valve to use milk ? how do we wash valve after that ? do you use food colouring liquid in bowl or in valve ? how do we chnage background:colors ? i have seen you sell backgrounds on your site. which adaptalux kit would you recommend to order for water/milk droplet photo with pluto water drop kit ? i have seen so many filters, arms, controller,... that i have stopped searching. do you have distributors for belgium (amazon fr...) ?

We didn't have any issues using milk in the pluto valve, and it was cleaned by running water through it.
We haven't tried food colouring yet, but plan to when we re-visit this subject soon.
There are lots of ways to change the background colour, a background card like the one's we sell would work great.
As for which of our packs, you will need flash arms for this, not the LED arms. At least 1 control pod, the flash trigger, and one or more flash arms.

How far away can it trigger?
Not sure which devices you are referring to here? We didn't have any issues with triggering distance on anything we were using.
Do you need a pluto valve? Or will the trigger with flash be sufficient?
The trigger works together with the valve to release the drop at the correct moment. I think you would need both to be effective with this.

Be careful that the liquid must always be higher than the small tube in the center of the tank (question of atmospheric pressure) :D
Just to point out you don't need all these fancy gadgets and apps to take these types of shot. I used a Canon 800d with Sigma 70-300 APO DG, Two table lamps and a dropper from an old eyedropper bottle, second tripod with an arm clipped to the top and a marker where to drop the water from. Hanging some string with a weight into the water gives you the drop zone and a focus point, either auto-focus or manual focus onto the string then remove and switch to manual so it doesn't try to refocus for the shot, Finally use a remote to the camera. Timing is key so have a couple practice runs, you want the shutter to operate as soon as the drop hits the surface. Check out my results at PInn Sharp Images on Facebook
Indeed, you can get some shots with trial and error with the timing, but you won't be getting the water drops to collide with a setup like that. Unfortunately the collisions do require a setup capable of automatic timing!
hello, i read in your answers you are using 1/100 F/22 and iso 400 with pluto triggering camera by wire and radio transmitter on camera. in same ideas than First man photography 1/200sec F11 iso 400. Do you know why we see lot of tutos expalining this triggering is not consistent and has delays not repetitive and the best way is to connect pluto to flash with a wire and point pluto to IR detetcor of camera at 1-2sec shutter speed. Or, interesting, same but instead of a wire between pluto and flas, a rf transmitter which lays on the table. Why should a wired trigger and transmitter on camera be much longer responsonse ?
Hi Marc. I've not tested enough with different setups to know which methods work best, but I didn't find that any delay with the triggering of the drop was significant enough to cause problems, it just takes some adjustment with the timings in the app. The only method I have used personally is the one you see in the video.
As for settings, different flash systems, environments and distances from the splash will all result in different exposures, so no two people will be getting those the same.
I do plan another water drop video soon with a MIOPS water drop kit, so maybe I'll have more clarity on your question then.
I don't know why is my water splash are not in focus. I am on manual focus mode. I am using softbox with elinchrom
You need to make sure you have a wide enough aperture is narrow to get all of the splash in focus, and make sure to focus manually on the exact spot your drop is going to fall. It could also be that your flash speed is too slow so you are still getting some motion blur, hard to say without seeing the images.

Very cool. But it is unfortunate that the Pluto trigger requires a smartphone. So those who do not have smartphones but prefer to do computing on much more robust desktop systems can't access this technology. Please don't forget the users who do not choose to use smartphones.
Hi Brianne, there are a lot of water drop kits out there, some of which can be controlled manually rather than with an app. I can't speak for how they compare, but many people use different setups that do the same thing. :)
I say that is a Tamron lens, are you sure?, for it looks alot like the Tokina 100mm macro.

We do use the Tamron occasionally, but yes, this is the Tokina 100mm f2.8
@@Adaptalux Thanks for replying. I might also add, in 2020, the Tokina 100mm macro lens, is still in the top 5 of being sharpest. Again, this also goes to prove to people, YOU DON'T NEED HIGH END GEAR. I see so many people having the money to buy anything, so buy top end gear, but don't get the results. My input is to photographers is, get gear you can afford and learn it inside and out, you will be surprised on what you can get. To many photogs say, you MUST have Canon lenses on Canon or Nikon lenses on Nikon but the fact is, third party have come along way and some back then or even now, are actually sharper.

Its true that she is very understanding with some of the mess I create around the house with these shoots. Mushrooms sounds like it might be a little tidier, I'll add it to the list, maybe one for the summer months if I manage to get out into the woods for a video!
Don't forget to use colors and gum arabic
