This series have helped give me anew appreciation for the different literary styles in the Bible, and awe for how God masterfully guided the formation of the scriptures by human hands over the centuries, to guide his people. In particular, the videos on Biblical Poetry are fantastic. A huge thank you to everyone at The Bible Project.
I agree the Bible Project has shine light to how to read the bible. However its still the bible, let me explain a (i do make this statement open to those that have an answer and etc) In Genesis, it talks about the creation. Now, this video is making a claim about how the bible (in some parts) are written in poetry. The video says when it talks about water in Genesis it not talking about tangible water but in poetry way. The question comes to who is to say what is poetry in the bible and what isn't for example. when jesus walked on water did the bible mean water or something else? and talking about the creation, when you say god separated the light from dark one can say the light means good and the dark means evil. then why does it say the in the bible the light is called day and the dark is called night? you see this is where i get confused.
@@rluque6294 Wow! Interesting. Good question. Maybe the two layers of meaning exist at once? The night, for instance could have been perceived as being evil by ancient people as they were fraught with unknown danger, and day perceived as being good since you could see everything in front of you and hence make intelligent and stable decisions?
@@rluque6294 You can't read every book in the Bible the same way. Some were written by poets or teologians to communicate a truth lost in the beggining of times. Many centuries ago mythical language was a perfectly legitimate way to convey truths, we can't expect the Bible to be written thinking only in 21th century europeans. Others were literal stories written by witnesses who chose death over saying what they had written was a lie. Many centuries, many books, and many ways to write. You can't compare Genesis to Gospels.
@@giovannimartini6405 I guess I can understand what you are trying to say. However, we as people can take words and construct them how ever we like. The question was who are we to say what they met and what they mean. I think its cool that we can tell what is written in a poetic text and when its written in a "witnesses" pov. However, it still doesn't answer the question to who are we to say what they met when writing in that poetic way. like the 10 commandment for example
@@rluque6294 Well, you might not be anyone. But there are people who study apocriphal books and the literature of ancient Israel and its neightbour countries. For example: H. Renckens' book _Israel's Concept of the Beginning_ They can tell how is each book. Of course, someone who know much about ancient texts or even general literature can't speak much, even if he may be an expert in other things. That's studying the Bible too, and we mustn't be scared of doing so!
I found Jesus through these videos, just imagine all the souls you are bringing home. Surely Jesus is very proud over you and watches over you. Be wise like Jobe, God bless.
I really like these videos, none of us will have an excuse for not reading or listening to the Bible, it's so much information to help you study the Bible with the Holy Spirit as your Guide and with prayerfulness.❤🥰Thank you!!! The Bible project
Guess what? None of you can read Hebrew. You are getting translations of translations. It would be so easy to go to a Jewish book store and get a good translation.
Watching this again(xy) times..and never fails to quicken me. Thought about all the water metaphors we have....its sink or swim, we're drowning in.., trying to keep my head above water...but until we think about people like that, then wow the psalms are elevated in their passion! Thanks so much!! I'm over flowing with gratitude🐳🤗😊
I love the transition of the garden to King David's temple to a person on an elevated rock and just simply Jesus being that metaphorical rock. ❤️❤️ great job you guys. Thanks for teaching us through your creative work.
Thank you, God, for the Bible Project RUclips channel! You have blessed them abundantly in the areas of artistry, production, speech, consistency, and dedication so that they would bless many others, through Your name! You are an awesome and powerful God!
I study Applied Linguistics and I'm taking a course on Metaphors at the moment. This is the first time I see this expansive explanation of metaphors associated to the Bible, linking them to every aspect of language and not limiting it to literary analysis. Yes, metaphors are part and parcel of language! And you guys presented Lakoff & Johnson's ideas in an amazing way! Kudos for this channel, packing rich information through very attractive artwork. God bless you!
Bible Project should be a class in common school, since it has become a great teacher of the communication in religious texts. Thank you, God bless you all with lives of abundance and clarity.
Y'all are awesome!! As our world grows darker by the day, digging deeper into the Word really is my source of strength and peace!! God bless you and yours!
Outstanding. May I suggest that to each of these videos, you add a bibliography for further reading, not in the video itself, but beneath it in the description. For instance, many viewers would probably like to read more about the Garden of Eden as a primordial temple. As a licensed tour guide in Israel and holder of a Masters degree from Hebrew University in religious studies, I will have come across such literature, but I guarantee that it is hard to come by by most American lay Christians. Therefore, a brief bibliography would be very helpful!
These videos are helping me so much with my bible study. And understanding the word. Thank you for making them. I found you guys off the Bible app plans & it’s been such a blessing to my walk.
I love you work. Thank you for making it. I did want to mention that a metaphor never uses like or as. His heart is a whale; is a metaphor. However, his heart is like a whale is not a metaphor. It's an important distinction/concept in Art and in language. I love the Matisse/Van Gogh style animation, beautiful development.
I'm surely enjoying your videos as I read through the You Version of the Bible in a year. I've read the Bible through every year and your plan is informative and interesting! Thank you.
Please don’t accept this as nitpicking, but I’m an educator and it’s important for the kids that are watching to understand that there’s a diff between simile and metaphor.
Once again, a masterfully executed, visually appealing storytelling high point. Explaining with clarity and rest, the imaging varies throughout the video yet keeps being coherent. A work of art. The Bible project deserves lots of prizes in my opinion.
I have been waiting for this update and im thrilled to see the new videos! Because of you guys I can understand the Bible much better! Im very happy with the new videos and y o u all keep going! Thank you for all, that all of you do and put an effort in helping people understand the bible better :D

Literally clapping my hands right now. Awesome awesome awesome. I'm currently reading the Psalms and if there's any takeaway, I need to slow down and savour. Thank you TBP.
Whoa!! amazing art.. and explainig how we use metaphors in our daily lives before going into biblical metaphors help me connect them better!! thanks for the vidoes..!
I was born with aphantasia it’s were u don’t possess a minds eye so I always found it hard to read biblical text bc I have to have visuals to understand that why I’m so thankful for your videos help me understand god so much more than before and I’m really greatful for that:)
John, I get it that this is to point out the use of metaphor and I don't mean to just be picky, plus I know you know this, but Jesus didn't say (I paraphrase what you relate at 4:23) "He who listens to my voice...builds his house upon bedrock" but "He who hears my words and does them (puts them into practice) is like a person who built their house on the bedrock" My understanding from Matt 7:24 and Luke 6: 47-48 is that the metaphor itself is regarding "Putting them (Jesus's teachings) into practice" is the evidence of faith that Jesus is Messiah, Emanuel (God with us.) Otherwise people would just be only calling him "Lord" (Matt. 7:22-23, Luke 6:46) but not actually doing what he says.
If I may add to your well-founded complaint, they seem to be saying that the first few chapters of Genesis are metaphorical, when in fact they are historical. Otherwise, it's a fine video.
itsnotaboutme I would say Joseph was a symbol for Jesus, even though I believe Joseph was a real person. Jesus was thrown into a pit by his brothers, and he later was taken out of the pit and eventually put in power in Egypt above everyone else; just like Jesus was put to death by his own people, but now is risen and sits at the right hand of God with all power and authority. There are plenty of other examples of real people who have symbolic meaning. Jesus himself says that Jonah was a figure of himself because he was in the belly of the whale for three days and nights. (Matthew 12:39-40). Elijah was a picture of John the Baptist, Enoch was a picture of the Church, David was a picture of Christ... of course, some of these are interpretations and not directly stated in the Bible, but you should look into them, because I would say there's a lot of evidence to support the metaphorical significance of a lot of old testament histories.
I think they are intending to say that Genesis is a true story being told, at least in part, with metaphorical language. The best way to communicate even factual and historical ideas is often with metaphor. In fact, I would argue that all interesting communication includes some degree of metaphor. Even the phrase, "taking something literally," uses the word "taking" metaphorically!
Thank you for this BibleProject team!✝️God bless everyone!! You all are so amazing and handsome/beautiful. Does anyone want me to pray for them or their family? I would love to do that!🙏🏾❤️
