Have you ever read Wise Children by Angela Carter? The novel is about twin sisters Nora and Dora Chance, who can only be told apart because one wears Shalimar and the other wears Mitsouko. When I first read it as a teenager I was fascinated by the glamour of the two perfumes and it was part of what started me on a fragrance journey. I preferred Shalimar then, but now prefer Mitsouko. Both legends. Anyway, thanks for the video. (Samsara is Queen btw)
I just got a decant of JGP Classique Essence de Parfum for women, and one spray was enough for me to add it to my wishlist. Hadn't believed in love at first smell until that moment ♡
Villagers with torchers is a good way to describe many YT comment threads. I always picture that Beauty and the Beast scene where the villagers go to destroy the Beast's castle xD
Great video! I worked for a trade show company in 1992 and at one of our beauty expos, Thierry Mugler introduced Angel. The tiny star was a give away. This formulation was absolutely gorgeous. Today, it is a mess. BTW - I wore Samsara is on my wedding day. It is just the most gorgeous smooth, smoky sandalwood ever. Beautiful is still a lovely perfume and not many perfumes today rival this floral - very definitely feminine.
loved this video. Mostly because it took me on a nostalgic journey, remembering the first time I smelled these fragrances, and the people who wore them. It brought to mind several not mentioned, Lancome Tresor, Kenzo Jungle, 24 Faubourg Hermès, and many, many, more... Thanks for th' trip! Awesome as usual.
My first perfume ever when I was a teenager was Anais Anais. Second was CK One (very briefly), then Opium (in the 90s). Those 3 will always have a place in my heart. I would add Calvin Klein Obsession to this list, I know many ppl hate on the current formulatin but I somehow love that plasticky note.
I loved sniffing at my mom's bottle of Loulou back in the day, even as a young kid I thought it smelled magical. It was in the original bottle too! I recently sniffed it again at a drugstore and I couldn't believe how strong it was. I don't think I could wear it now, it's absolutely beast mode though!
OMG, I loved this entire list; so many amazing fragrances from my youth, including my very first perfume, Poison (followed quickly by Opium), AND LouLou! I'd forgotten how much I loved that one! I'll have to go and smell Amarige, because I never have; my Ropion for Givenchy was Ysatis. :-)
Oooh Ysatis... What a treasure. And it seems to be very stable; every little bottle I've found from the 80s has been picture perfect, even after all these years. Not all florals have survived quite so well (looking at you, all those beautiful Ombre Rose bottles that have turned to acetone.)
Love your list, u mentioned some of my all time favorites. I would also add L'heure Bleue by Guerlain, Organza by Givenchy and my love love love Prada Infusion D'Iris Absolue!!!
Fabulous list! ! Lou Lou. was my first ever fragrance which I bought when I was 17, and was my signature scent for years . So many memories of my youth in the 80s! I still have a bottle in my collection and will never stop loving it. I would have also included Bulgari Black, hypnotic poison, Le Male, and Tresor.
Know and have smelled most of these. Love love love some of these like the Guerlains. Have to try Lulu and the Gaultiers and Amarige. You forgot the one that was a sensation in 1985-Giorgio. That was a sensation.
Great list! There are a few I would add...but, the two that come to mind most immediately are L' Air du Temps by Nina Ricci. So feminine and beautiful.... Also Mitsouko.... Both legendary.... 😊
I wore Mitsouko at my wedding, hahaha! I've been married 29 years and still it's my all time favorite perfume in my very large collection. Loved this video!
I would also place on this list a legendary perfume by Sophia Grosjman, JAIPUR BOUCHERON released in 1994 for women(how I wish you could review that one) ,along with Poeme Lancome and Organza by Givenchy, both huge hits of the 90s. Like you said the 90s were the golden age of perfumery. Amarige is that fragrance I can never stop having in my collection. Yvresse by ysl was another one from the 90s that I loved, you did a great review on that one, and the list could go on and on, but I'll just leave it there. So glad when you upload.
Baccarat Rouge is definitely MFKs best seller... at least in Australia. I swear everyone at the department stores here smells like it. I’m not a fan of sweet smells or MFK’s releases in his own brand, and smelling it EVERYWHERE makes it worse 🙈 great list, I’ve heard of most of these but I haven’t smelled all of them. Definitely have some strong memories of my aunt and her Poison... if I could add two more to your list , I’d add Narciso Rodriguez For Her and the Dior J’Adore (that ad campaign is seared into my memory forever!). Maybe not favourites for some but definitely “iconic”
Fantastic list! The only scent I would add is Giorgio. It was everywhere during the mid eighties in the US. Not sure if was as popular in other parts of the world back then? Vintage Samsara is the most beautiful sandalwood. 😊
I have seven of these iconic fragrances (that is if the edt version of Chanel no 5 counts) and my all time favourite is LouLou!! 😍 But it is funny, because I don't think it is bombastic at all??! I think it is just so soft, romantic, warm and beautiful, and a bit mysterious and sensual. It makes me feel safe... funny how different you can read fragrances! I love your precious Samsara, too, but it is a newer friend of mine, so unfortunately I never knew the older versions. But maybe that is a good thing for me, so I don't have to be sad...
I absolutely loved this video, Tom. I adore many of the frags you mentioned and those that I don't love, I respect. For No 5 I would recommend smelling the parfum (extrait) as it is more faithful to Ernest Beaux's creation than the EDP, which is an 80's recreation of the original by Jacques Polge. Opium is nothing short of amazing. I have a bottle from the early-mid 90s and one pre-2009 but I also love the current one, it's more centered around Myrrh as opposed to the spices. I had a mini bottle of Angel in secondary school!! My mum gave it to me, I imagine it must have been a gift with purchase. Loved it back then but I couldn't afford a full bottle of it.
Great video ❤️❤️❤️ I am revisiting so older CKs and love the clean and refreshing smells of CK One, Eternity, and Truth. Very nice for a spring day, crisp morning or sunny day.
Haha I can't believe how vintage I am. I got 13 perfumes from the list and I am still in love with some of them but I wear new fragrances as well,. Thanks I really enjoy your videos x
I just love a trip down Fragrance Lane #Nostalgia These are indeed Legendary, I won't lie, Flowerbomb caught me off guard. When you mentioned it I was shocked lol... Thought you'd think it to be "generic" But this is a damn Good List 🔥🔥
So cliche but I wore beautiful by Estée Lauder for wedding 👰 in 2005 !! 😅😅 I Have the Opium fragrance, love it 🥰 and so different to my other fragrances . 👍
I know most of these but own only one - Cacharel ,Anais Anais. :)) And it's a flanker. I want to add more 90's fragrances to my arsenal ! Most new frags are just another version of Vanilla . ( I don't shop niche ) . Good old 90's ....
As always, spot on Thomas. I found myself nodding with each one you mentioned, and I for one would not mind an all day long video on classic and legendary fragrances :) I wore a white floral on my wedding day - Tatiana Diane von Furstenberg, the year after it was released. It was my favorite fragrance of that era.
I smelled Chanel no. 5 at the department store and didn't care for it, and I only own one of these (Opium) (love it in cold weather) and I own cheap dupes of four (Light Blue, Angel, Chanel no. 5 & Flowerbomb) (the only dupe I like is Light Blue). Am I a bad, stupid girl?... BTW GREAT VIDEO, TOM! I would have added Mitsouko but as you said, one could indefinitely add to this list. Today I'm thinking "now why didn't he put Avon's Wind Song on the list?" but I'm sure it's only because I'm wearing it right now, plus maybe Wind Song wasn't the the popular cheapie in England that it was back in the day in the U.S.... ok, STAY SAFE! and no more coughing!! 🤭 😷 💗
@@ouch110 oops, Wind Song is by Prince Matchabelli. My bad. And on the body spray it says made in UK, filled in UAE. Hmm.... I know - not relevant, hahaha.
I only had samsara back in the day, on your list. Oh & beautiful for 2mins but was too sweet & swapped a friend for Magie noir which i loved! Wish I could remember what perfume I wore for my wedding but I wore pink eyeshadow and short hair . 1982 lol…
You are wonderful at what you do! Always put a smile on me, And so glad iam not the only one who has problems with some of the names w/ some names 😅 lol
Samsara vintage is my signature since 1989. Not the only one I wear, about 100 bottles going on but I always return to this one when I want to smell like myself. Searching for vintage EDT all the time and stock up. Worth the investment for sure! Have/had the most of the others and they all are so different and special, Flowerbomb and La vie est belle never got to me. I hardly smell anything except sugar. Very nostalgic choice but at least at those days fragrances were different and not a copy of...
Got the Faun sample this week. Sooo delightful. Very impressed. The opening is light and fresh but not cold or citric or aquatic, unsual. It smells very natural, like a walk in the woods after the rain in a Spring day. I wore it to bed last night. I want a full bottle. Top of the Christmas list. 😘
I have Lou Lou and it was love at first sniff! I'm quite young, so I think it's not about age. And like you, I'm afraid of it 🤣 Maybe because I work in a partly office environment. In my alone time tho, it's like a drug 🤪
Wow! Anais Anais is my first floral fragrance. I have been wearing citrus fragrances only before the encounter. I thank my friend, Iranian lady for giving me the samples of fragrances she had collected as a gift.
I've just started on my fragrance journey and you're enthusiasm makes me want to try everything you love! I especially can't wait to try Zoologist, I've got samples of your top 5 in my shopping cart rn and as soon as I get paid those babies are mine 😍😍
About time I get around to seeing this. Off work today, so I can. YAY! Am glad to see that quite a few of these perfumes I have owned at one time or another. Poison, Lou Lou, Samsara, Anais Anais, Beautiful, Amarige, La Vie est Belle, and Light Blue. As for CK One, I've never owned a bottle myself but used to borrow some of my room mate's when I was in college. My mom had Shalimar and Chanel #5 back in the days when I was a kid.
Hi Thomas. Im just watching a bunch of your video reviews. I used to wear Jicki and also Mitsuko ...sorry I think i spelled them both wrong. You know what I mean though. From guerlain. Beautiful! Cant stand Channel 5 but mostly bad scent memories ruined it for me. I remember the original Opium! It was my mother in laws signature scent. Her car, house everything smelled of Opium. ❤Samsara was my signature scent for years. Im very curious about Santal 33
I own or have owned 12 on this list. I associate some like samsara or lou lou so strongly with certain times of my life I would never go back to them. Others feel more timeless to me...Does that make sense or is it just me?! AND - shock horror - I’ve never smelled aventus😳 well not knowingly anyway!!!
Feel free to gush about Samsara 🤎🤎🤎 I luuuuurvvve (trying to say love while drooling) it so. If I take a perfume course, I would love to try making a Samsara dupe, lol 😏
That's so fascinating! I adore Tam Dao, and the only reason I don't have a bottle is my pocketboook, and to me it has that old books smell, with a certain gentle sweetness (not sweet like caramel; sweet like the slightly vanilla-y, musty spine of old books.) Santal 33, on the other hand, I have no ability to be totally objective about, because it smells to me exactly like the Moroccan leather pieces being sold in outdoor markets in the mediterranean during the 80s, when I was a child. To me it smells drier, bolder, more straightforward, but I wonder how much of that is the association. Neither, of course, has anything really to do with the smell of mysore sandalwood, but Tam Dao seems to have more of a yielding quality to it that can be found in sandalwood. I'd live to hear your opinion if you decide to revisit them side by side!
100 percent agree with your choices. Be bold and wear that LouLou! At least around the house (not around the birds though). :). I would add Chanel's Coco for me. But like you said, we could add and add and add...
Have most of them but not Jicky or Beautiful (I have smelled them though) Amarige used to be my sig. Surprised Portrait of a Lady didn't make the cut as I think it's the iconic Rose perfume. Glad I'm not the only one who dislikes Baccarat Rouge and it's million dupes 😁
Oh, vintage Samsara... my unforgettable & eternal love...
Same!
My favourite of all time! 😍😍
i am loving that you are more active on your channel these days 😍 i really enjoy your videos
More to come!

Oh wow that sounds so cool, I will look it up! Thanks.
i wish more people would embrace unique perfumes, imagine this is what was considered mainstream back in the day
I love that Loulou and Anaïs are on the list 😍
A millennial who loves 80s perfumes here 🙋🏻♀️😂
Yes! Rock those oldies.
"I'm gonna stand off camera and talk to myself about it for 10 minutes so you don't have to listen..." LOL😭I love your list, this was great❤❤❤

Opium was the first perfume I brought as a teenager in 1987 - loved it!
Kudos to you for wearing opium as a teenager. YES!!!!
I just love your sense of humor 🤣, you really made my day much better❤️

I'm one of those who have just recently started my fragrance journey so I really liked this video.

I still have a bottle in my collection and will never stop loving it. I would have also included Bulgari Black, hypnotic poison, Le Male, and Tresor.
Hypnotic poison yes! I think that the original is more legendary though. :) Le Male...definitely!
Good, good, good!! I would add Paris by YSL.👌
YES!! A favorite of mine for years!
Good choice!

I have a mini Angel by Thierry Mugler. It is really cute. Very strong perfume.

I don't think they are very similar. Santal doesn't really smell like sandalwood but tam dao does!
100 percent agree with your choices. Be bold and wear that LouLou! At least around the house (not around the birds though). :). I would add Chanel's Coco for me. But like you said, we could add and add and add...
Good call! Yes there could be many many more!
I have watched this one over 4 time 😇😇😇
Wow haha.
I am literally ordering samples as you speak 😁😁
No Jo Malone Pomegranate ?!! 🙂😉👍
haha, nope!
Thankyou
You’re welcome 😊
I understand this is YOUR list. In my opinion there are quite a few minor fragrances in comparison to the likes of Aramis, Old Spice or Brut.
a Great and a fair list :)
Thanks!
Great list! Love your reviews! You always bring a smile to my day. ❤️🌹🌸
Thank you for this legendary list. I am the one who likes to wear Amarige from time to time)

Glad you like them Pam FAM! :)
This was amazing!! I absolutely loved every second.
Good list!
Thanks!
Portrait is definitely something that could be on this list...there are many others!
Love this video! Great idea and great list! I have many and have a few more to acquire! I also like to stalk people’s Fragrantica shelves.
