You won't get me down underground in your mines,
Away from the fields and the flowers so fine,
Down in the dark where the sun never shines,
No, you won't get me down in your mine.
They dig for the coal for most of their lives,
Away from their children, away from their wives,
To make others rich in the heat and the dark,
But who's going to care when they're too old to work?
You won't get me down underground in your mines,
Away from the fields and the flowers so fine,
Down in the dark where the sun never shines,
No, you won't get me down in your mine.
    There's many a miner who's died underground,
Died all alone when the roof tumbled down,
Crushed all his bones underneath the great beam,
Or coughed out his life in the gas-filled coal seam.
You won't get me down underground in your mines,
Away from the fields and the flowers so fine,
Down in the dark where the sun never shines,
No, you won't get me down in your mine.
I'll work in your factories and I'll work on your farms,
Dig roads till the muscles stand out of me arms,
I'll fight in your armies and I'll go out to sea,
But by Christ you won't make a coal miner of me!
You won't get me down underground in your mines,
Away from the fields and the flowers so fine,
Down in the dark where the sun never shines,
No, you won't get me down in your mine.

As did I, it was when we went down to see the coal mines I think. I think it really conveys the hardship that the coal miners suffered and it makes me think that we are so so lucky to not have to go through all this to get essentials for life.
