Bono knew exactly what he was doing right from the start , after losing his mum he channelled his higher self and wrote some brilliant lyrics on the first album that really touch the soul...

Still say that to this day. His mum's death was the catalyst that made him a superstar. He's carried it with him all these years.

    MY LETTER TO U2-1987
I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono!
I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage!
I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations.
Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year!
    All the Best!
    Gary Lagstrom

i'm not sure exactly what you mean by 'the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive"...i suppose that could be the case....randomly showing up at the box office and being able to buy tickets for great seats. the key word is randomly...did u2 somehow leak this type of information to a select few, or was it just chance? in your case it didn't really matter. you got to see the show. i will tell from my experience, i was completely bummed by both the shows at Hampton, VA December 10-11 1987 Hampton selling out very quickly, less than an hour, and basically gave up. but very unexpectedly, and i suppose you could say by chance, i received notification from Propaganda, the U2 fan club/magazine, that since i was a member, they reserved two tickets for me, 7th row center. and the rest is history.

I was a 21 year old undergraduate when my local community college radio station played Boy in it’s entirety. I played guitar back then and when they started to play it I thought to myself “they got it they’ve got the sound I’ve seeking on the guitar” this was when “hip” people were onto the emerging keyboard sounds of bands like Gary Newman and the Tubeway Army and Ulravox. Edge had succeeded in emulating the repetitive sound of the keyboards in the recordings that we were getting such pleasure from the underground new wave and we were extremely exclusive about our love of this kind of music coming out of Europe. This concert brings me back to that night when the radio DJ came on the radio and said “this is a new band from Ireland we’re going to play their new record Boy, all of the tracks. I grew up with progressive rock radio. Georgetown University was playing artists on it’s station WGTB with were highly progressive as was WHFS. I thought to myself that night I don’t know who played guitar for U2 but he’d found the sound that same sound that these other bands were doing on the keyboard. I was taken with Boy that night. I knew immediately that this was a band that was going places and quickly. 😅

@@merijnb1148 OK, maybe I'm being _a little_ hard on them. Unquestionably, they've produced good work throughout their career. Up to, and including 'War', though, they were a great, tight, exciting New Wave band. After that, any impartial and discerning listener of taste (ie, _Me!_ ) would have to support the case that, in particular, Bono's escalating 'Gobsh¡†ery' (a term he'd be familiar with from his homeland) and Edge's phoning in of the 'Chokka Chokkas' had the result that, _overall,_ the standard of the work declined.

If it was for TV (I realise it was in a theatre), audiences 'on the continent' were generally told to sit still and 'look attentive' back then. Polite applause was permissable. Also, in Europe as a whole, even in 1981, venue managements were generally 'super' lairy of any 'group' that vaguely smacked of Mods 'n' Rockers, Bootboys, Metallers, Punks etc. ( _Especially_ Punks!) Any behaviour that came across as even _slightly_ boisterous was liable to get you chucked out!
