    • @jtolanmedia1
      @jtolanmedia1  4 года назад +2

      hi, most cameras sensors have an IR blocking filter in front of it, to preserve the colors, so this filter has to be removed if you want to shoot in infrared. Option 1 which I recommend is to send it to a shop for IR conversion e.g. Lifepixel.com or Option 2, you can attempt to do it yourself, there are tutorials out there. If you don't like these options you can still take IR images maybe with a 720nm filter and long exposure settings, like maybe a second or more. I tried a long export a while back with an unconverted camera and an 820nm filter and it came out violet colored, but very dark.

    If you want to examine refraction, that is pretty simple. Look at sunrise or sunset times over a water horizon. If light refracts upward, sunset will occur earlier than geometry dictates. If light refracts downwards, it will occur later. Spoiler alert - it occurs later.

    Why do you accept the idea that light travels in a curved path? Refraction of light is described as being angular. One cannot assume a constant progression of angular refractions across a distance that would justify accepting the concept of a curved path of light. I also noted that you are running calculations based on the refractive index of a vacuum and of air instead of air at two different values of refractive index value. Have you considered that observation number four falls in line with a thermal mass of air with a different index of refraction? This would cause a greater refracted angle along that path. The common approximation of something that varies wildly seems pretty unscientific.

    Sorta reminds me of the fable of Eratostheses.
    Assuming due to (in a practical sense) the alleged distance between earth and the sun and also partially due to the size of the sun, all light rays from the sun impinging on the earth should be, for all intents and purposes, parallel. Draw it out and you'll understand what I mean - if it's not clear, that is.
    So if the sun is directly overhead at noon in one city (Syene/Cyrene) on the equator in the middle of summer, if a stick of a certain length is held normal to the earth's surface it will cast no shadow (angle of elevation = 90 degrees). Now in another city (Alexandria), also on the equator, some 500 miles away to the west, at the same time, the sun is not directly overhead, but rather an identical stick held normal to the surface of the earth casts a shadow making an angle of elevation with the level ground of 82.88 degrees. The right-angle triangle formed 1/2 way between these 2 cities 500 miles apart as a vertex angle of 7.12 degrees (90.00 - 82.88). Eratosthenes reasoned that if all the rays are parallel due to the initial assumption, then the measured angle must vbe due to the alleged "curvature of the earth". But what if the initial assumption is wrong? (Do not assume because when you do you makes an ass out of ... .) What if the sun is close and small? Here the light rays would not be parallel. So if the earth is flat (planar, not a sphere), then the angle could be used to calculate the distance between the earth and the sun directly. It works out to be about 4100 miles. Significantly, and interestingly close to the 3959-mile accepted radius of the alleged spherical earth. And does it even bother some people that the loosely accepted earth-sun distance is 93,000,000 miles and the speed of light is 186000 miles per second, and 2 X 93 = 186? Convenient coincidence? I think not! So 2 scenarios can be used to determine the shape of the earth. Both work. One is simple. The other is complicated. But from this experiment, neither model can be proved to be the correct one. One thing to consider is how could one truly perform this experiment in 240 BC without the possibility of coordinating identical measurement activities at the same time some 500 miles apart without the ability to communicate in real time. Pretty much a lost cause in 240 BC!

    Quote from the description - "Are our assumptions about refraction wrong?"
    If by "our" you mean the scientific community as a whole, I doubt it. It's been pretty thoroughly studied for ages. I personally have copies of 4 studies on atmospheric refraction prepared by and for the US military for the purposes of refining visual targeting. (It's a subject they try hard to get right.) The oldest of them goes back to the 1960s and of course the issue has been studied as far back as the 17th century by people like Pierre de Fermat.
    So ... no ... I don't think so. What we know about refraction may be giving you results you, JTolan, are uncomfortable with. But scientific integrity comes before your mental comfort.

    I thought you said you were going to go to a high place, like Mt. San Jacinto (10,833' or 3.3km), and measure the dip angle to the ocean horizon. Suppose it is 1.8°. Then, using the formula I gave you, R = 6567 x 3.3/1.8^2, you would get R = 6689 km. That's on the high side, I know, it's about 5% bigger than Wikipedia says. But the angle might be a little bit more. Of course, with standard refraction you'd have to shrink it a bit to get closer to the real R. You can do this from any height, like an airplane window. (If you measure height in miles or any other units, just plug the height in the formula; the radius R will be in those units.)

    That's not how you calculate the radius of the earth, on a day with no wind tie 3 helium balloons to 3 milk cartons with the same length string also tie each milk carton to a second string to a second milk carton filled with some rocks or something for an anchor place the three in a line upon a shallow lake gps locate the placement of each then measure the height difference of the middle balloon to determine the shape of the earth, pick a shallow area so the floating milk cartons don't float to far from the gps location, and basically the height different of the middle balloon should indicate the radius of the earth, 1mile 8 inches height difference of middle balloon, 2 miles 2.67 feet, 3 miles 6ft, 4 miles 10.67ft, 5 miles 16.67 feet height difference of middle balloon, 10 miles
    66.69 feet height difference of middle balloon. To measure the height difference of the middle balloon find the angle where you can see both end balloons in a straight line they should overlap, probable would be good idea to have a bigger far balloon so when you view it from a straight line perspective the two end balloons overlap the far balloon with the near balloon obviously on a photograph. you could put colored streamers or tape flags on the middle balloon string at increments of feet/yards or meters, alternatively you could simply take a photograph and rely upon the height of the balloons for a metric. Project cost about a day and about $20 for balloons and gas and string, assuming you have a modern gps enable cellphone with a camera. Rinse and repeat move the balloons around the lake capturing their gps locations and the height difference of the middle balloon in every direction to determine the shape radius of the earth. 8 inches should be noticeable if you have an 8 inch balloon over a mile measurement. Flat Earthers should choose 3 different sized different colored balloons largest for the far balloon middle sized for the middle balloon then from a direct line of sight all three should overlap according to the flat earth narrative. Whatever shape the earth is this simple cheap test should determine it irrefutable on any sized body of water. Your welcome.
