Skyrim's Unadded Features - Todd Howard's DICE 2012 Keynote Address

- Опубликовано: 8 фев 2012
- This is an excerpt from Todd Howard's 40-minute talk at DICE 2012 about Bethesda's development process and miscellaneous Skyrim trivia.
I found the whole thing quite interesting - you can watch it here on Gamespot's channel:
• (Skyrim) Todd Howard D...
Anyway, this video just shows a few minutes from the middle - the aftermath of the "Game Jam". Awesome stuff!
Of course, since then we've already received a lot of these features through patches - ranged/magic killcams and underwater effects, for example. Dawnguard also adds flying vampire lords, perk trees for vampirism and lycanthropy, and crossbows (among other things).
Note that the features shown in this video were developed AFTER Skyrim's release, so you can't claim they "left them out" because of greediness or anything.
UPDATE: I thought I might as well link to features added in by modders (that aren't already added through DLC or patches), so here we go: (if you know any other great mods that do these things then feel free to post me a link)
KEY: () - unimplemented; (x) - implemented by Bethesda in patches or DLC; (m) - implemented by modders
• () Seasonal foliage
• (m) Flow based water shader - the "WATER" mod is probably the best for this (skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/13268) - it includes a "get wet" effect and wet rocks as well as rivers flowing in the correct directions
• () Spears as weapons with a new animation system
• (x) Kill cams for ranged combat and magic - added by patches
• (m) New stealth options like water arrows and assassinations - water arrows: skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/22234
• () Guards relight areas
• (m) Paralysis runes - included with Midas Magic: skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/3413
• () Moving platforms and hanging structures in dungeons - there are moving structures in Apocrypha in Dragonborn DLC
• (x) Water currents in dungeons - included with Dawnguard
• (m) Dark dungeons - sooo many of these - try "Realistic Lighting" or an ENB profile; though you might have difficulty getting dark dungeons without getting pitch-black nights as well
• () New companion options
• (x) Build your own home from scratch - included with Hearthfire
• (x) Adopt children - included with Hearthfire
• () Skeletal butler - Dremora Butler with Dragonborn DLC
• (m) Combine magic to create new attacks - well... I recommend the awesome Apocalypse Spell Package , which provides so many unique and interesting spells you're bound to find some epic combos: skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/16225
• (x) Goblin enemies - with Dragonborn DLC (Rieklings)
• (x) 'Way Gate' fast travel - included with Dawnguard
• (x) Epic mounts like a flaming horse - (arguably) included with Dawnguard
• (x) Mounted combat on horses - added by patches
• (x) Dragon mounts - with Dragonborn DLC
• () 'Soul bug' familiar
• (x) Kinect-enabled 'shouts' - added by patches, or by mods for PC (I recommend skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/5626/ with skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/32821/)
• (x) Screen space ambient occlusion - available through Nvidia graphics profiles
• (x) Enhanced underwater visuals - added by patches
• (m) Footprints in the snow - The only footprints mod you'll ever need: skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/22745/
• () Verlet surfaces for non-rigid objects
• (m) Ice and fire arrows - could try Arrows of Magicka: skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/9799
• (x) Werebears! - with Dragonborn DLC
• (x) Lycanthropy-specific (werewolf) skill tree - included with Dawnguard
• (x) Become a flying Vampire Lord - included with Dawnguard
• () New Vampire imp minions
• () Mudcrab animation tweaks
• () Giant Mudcrab enemy - one day...
Cheers to Joystiq for the original feature list. - Игры
WHOEVER MADE THAT SEASON FOLIAGE, GIVE US YOUR KNOWLEDGE.
or rather, give the modders the knowledge!!
i wish some day that becomes a mod, have been waiting for it since 11-11-11

it was but then taken down
Why was it taken down?

What? i would worship him
Stop lying alchestbrooch, the seasonal foliage was never released.
The reason why seasonal foliage isn't a mod, and never will be a mod, is because we don't have the fucking skyrim source code. Bethesda's modding tools are a joke.
All i wanted was a spear, and what do i get? an arrow in the knee...
It's really cool how Bethesda actually implemented some of these features into the patches and DLC. Good looks.
they forget about fishing 9 years ago
Why did you not add the spears
Greendragon H I think I remember todd howard saying something like "all these people want variety and more skills I just want to see what skills can be mixed together"(no one I know agrees with this) spears not being one-handed or two handed weapons would have to have theyre own skill so I guess they didn't want that.
***** I hate the fact that the weapon skills have been mashed up together. If you have training with a one-handed sword it doesn't mean you can pick up a mace and be like ''WOW it's just like swinging a sword but slower''. In real life if you were a swordsman you wouldn't have a clue how to use a mace. That's why i liked Morrowinds skills.
I have been saying that for so long and no one has agreed with me until now =)
***** =)
fuuuck I NEED spears in skyrim! yeah i know you can mod them into the game on PC but i play on console sorry "PC master putos", anyway i could finally role play as a spartan with a fuckin spear n shield
Lol spears the giant mud crab and foot prints shouldve been added
Mods.
+Amir Rahman that's true lol.
Still it was already there they should've just kept it considering they were highly requested at the time.
+Leighton J yeah the animations for the spear looked nice, I would've just used that
I would of even waited longer for the game if they took the time and added it into the experience.
I think the idea of "dark dungeons" was that in addition to the regular dungeons, you'd have some really dark ones specifically designed to be explored with spells/torches, allowing for some unique puzzles and situations. Unlike ENB profiles that just make all existing dungeons darker.
To be fair they did add dark dungeons

Velvet Physics was used for Lord Harkon's cape in the Dawnguard DLC (wasn't used for anything else due to consoles not being able to handle it).

if it only takes a week to do all that then there is absolutely no reason for games to suck as much ass as they do today.
Weather Report The start's the hardest.
Weather Report One week for proof-of-concept, months and months for refinement, playtesting, and quality assurance.
Weather Report QA, implementing across the whole game and not just the small area you see there, all that kind of stuff. Besides, quite a lot of those things HAVE actually been implemented in patches and DLC :)

Glad that they ended up implementing some of these in the DLC packs, but I really wish we'd gotten a few more DLC releases that had more of these things in them. Some of the ideas seemed pretty awesome, either because it looks like a fun gameplay addition (like spell combinations) or because it would really enhance the atmosphere (like the dark dungeons or the seasons).

It's details. If you don't like visual quality, then don't bother. Sometimes the tiny things like that can be astonishing.
***** Yeah mate you're right! The water is just one of the best parts of the game how did I not realise? Listen its fucking water I don't give one about what it looks like as long as you can tell its water and it works properly, and I find it stupid about how much some people care about it.

The giant Mudcrab was supposed to be in Dawnguard, the idea was that it was a sub boss you fight while on your way to return Serana to her Father at the Castle but they took it out in the end.
Well have i got news for you then, they added it in as the end boss for fishing.
can't believe fromsoft ended up plagiarizing the giant crab for elden ring ffs
I love the late 2000s early 2010s game events because it’s all aimed at an older audience *giant mud crab crawls out of ground* “fuck”
its funny that almost everything in this video made it into the game or was modded in
They actually added a lot of these features eventually, one of them became an entire DLC. Also the warp gates clearly inspired the Auriel wayshrines
i am very impressed at how fast they were able to make such amazing mods in one week!
some of those mods would take forever to make. and some of them have made it to DLCs
e.g Waygates (shrines), Vampire lord, build your own house, adoption, "epic new mounts", water currents in dungeons e.t.c
these are awesome and i hope they make more DLCs containing some of these epic add-ons
Foot steps in snow would be cool, and this big mudcrab...AWESOMENESS!!
Footprints, a mod.
GameCrack - 0,2 k the footprints mod exists, i have it, and it makes the world feel that much more alive
This only shows how much skyrim was made with love by a team who really cared about it and had fun instead of being crunched for time
So much made it to the game officially, and the rest added through MODs. Wow!
A lot of this stuff showed up in future DLCs, and they added more visual effects in the Special Edition. Awesome!
all the little stuff like seasonal foliage and the flow-based water shader really could make skyrim more realistic,
and of course new weapons like spears (with the additional perks) would also make a real difference for the game play!
And the combinating spells would make it more fun to experiment with spells
They do really need to do these every few months. The game would be improved to much if they added this in. DLC release that.
Little did you know these would be the only features they add post launch 😂
The best parts werent included at all :(
Seasonal foliage, fuck yeah, Water shader :3
Dark dungeons, omg why wasnt that included :O
And follower training :O
We needed that so much and nope :/
Fucking consoles XD
Rechordian They clearly affected seasonal foliage.
Rechordian
Well actually, they kind of did. A lot was left out due to time restrictions. The PC market doesn't really do these kind of things, unless it's a console port mostly because it doesn't matter. With Steam they can force an update on you the next day, if there's a problem. Dark dungeons is also a nod to casual gamers, who don't want to carry a torch or use a spell which made both the spell and the torch useless. Not to mention night eye. It's obvious they assumed that darkness was going to be a thing, then added more ambient light at some point.
Most probabaly because they didnt have anymore time with skyrim left and now that they are working on Fallout 4 they wont even build on skyrim anymore skyrim is done with updates and such BUUUUT there are always MODS and thing soo i would guess that most of these features are being created by some one else on a mod
Welcome to modding.
besides the seasonal/velour foliage the rest can be done via mods ;)
But I agree, fuck the consoles!
Everyone wanting those Spears. I want that seasonal foliage!
Well this brings back some memories…
Omg, that combination magic idea would have been very lit and would have fitted very well in both the game system and the lore. I mean combining different spells together to get an entirely different spell would have been very awesome and would have made mage play a whole lot more fun. It would also justify using a whole lot more spells.
BETHESDA. PUT A FUCKING GIANT MUDCRAB IN YOUR NEXT GAME, OR EVEN ADD IT INTO SKYRIM. PLEASE. FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT I HOLD SACRED.

+Mike Wright No. There would be no Skyrim with consoles.
Why the fuck didn't spears get added to the game? I'm guessing for TES we will get another perk based system they'll probably say something like " we decided that there were to many skills so now we only have combat magic and stealth perk trees oh and we decided many of the 12 year olds didn't like that we only had 3 attributes so we decided to remove atributes all together, the little casuals also thought the game was to hard so we now have removed the ability to get defeated in combat and all the puzzles are gone" why do the TES games keep removing features Morrowind, Oblivion and Daggerfall were amazing but for some reason with skyrim they just said "FUCK you fans we want more money"
***** So fucking true it hurts. Damn casuls. I've nothing personal against them... but sometimes, they can get in the way... >__>
+SYMBIOTE DINOSAUR 100 % true fuck those little underaged bastards
+The Symbiote Dinosaur You are so right, you deserve 100 likes. I am seriously afraid of TES becoming an action game. Like Far Cry with magic and staffs. I think those old fans of TES who appreciated past chapters should assert themselves oftener. There are enough 18+ year old gamers with brains to re-direct Bethesdas attention from children with quite primitive wishes to them.
Ramiz S The problem is Bethesda has went the route of trying to appease the mass market, which will always outnumber the niche who supported their earlier games.
Dude daggerfall was fucking horse shit. And have you played Morrowind? The combat system is horrible and as soon as you hit higher levels you just one shot thing. Morrowind combat is more casual than Skyrim its legit a dice roll lol. And Oblivion puzzles and dungeouns were pretty bad honestly. They only had 1 guy working on it, Skyrim's were much better, but Morrowinds dwemer ones were really good. Skyrim fails in alot of things, and so does TES 3 and 4, but they all excel at so many things, and no one is better than the other, because Morrowind really is a niche game, Oblivion was their first really big game, considering Morrowind wasnt on the PS1, and Skyrim does have the biggest modding community ever, which is why if someone asks me which TES is the best, I say Skyrim.
The fact that most of this was added with the dlcs and was pay gated means they only cared about money and rushed the initial release
I still think that the appearance of Vampirism and Lycanthropy should vary based on race. Nord = Werebear,
Breton = Brown Werewolf
Khajiit = Weretiger with the general fur style of your character
Or at the very least have the Werewolf's fur be the same-ish color as your character's haircolor.
honestly that's pretty racist man
@@SirBonsley Get over it.

I don't know why, but the lack of spears is just... weird. I was glad to see them (it) in this video, and I hope they'll return in TES VI!
thats what mods are for, my dude
As an avid Skyrim modder (9+ years now), this video is very, very interesting. It's intriguing to see what got into the game and was never made it, like the adoption system and building houses in Hearthfire, and the shrine teleportation in Dawnguard.
So many of these features eventually did make it to the game through modding. I think the biggest one, to me, is environmental changes from seasons. This one is crazy. It's amazing to think that one developer (or a small team) thought about adding seasons to Skyrim like many players did and actually managed to implement it (in a way) within one week. It's unclear how robust the feature was from the small clip in the video, but it took modders 11 years after release to implement something similar that worked effectively. That's insane.
I think the one feature I would want them to add into the game is what they shown at 3:37. "Verlet surfaces for non-ridged objects". That sounds neat, and the way they show the banner reacting to the player colliding with it is cool, but then they show the giant MOVING TREE BRANCHES BY WALKING INTO THEM. That doesn't sound impressive, but to me this is one of the biggest things they could have done to improve immersion and environment. Why? Well, there's a mod call Grass Collisions that makes grass react to the player and NPCs standing on in and moving through it. Otherwise, actors just clip through the grass, and it looks awful. Like the seasons mod, it took years for one modder to implement this feature into Skyrim, something that's taken for granted in more modern open-world games like Breath of the Wild and Red Dead Redemption 2. But Grass Collisions adds so much to the game for something so simple.
The only issue with it, really, is that it makes you wish everything in Skyrim's environment reacted that way. Like, if you bump into a bush it doesn't react like grass in Grass Collisions. But what if it did? The clip from 3:37 implies that developers toyed with the idea of tree collisions at some point, meaning that bush collisions is actually possible as well. The biggest thing is that these collisions imply it can all be done in-engine. Grass Collisions can only be installed as a mod if you also install this modding-tool/mod called ENB. There is a prerequisite to Grass Collisions. With tree collisions, however, it doesn't look like there's a requirement at all.
My god, this video just blows my mind.
For real
The Branch even snaps back violently like in real life, thats even more impressive! :(
Man I remember this video... 11 years, damn. I've even commented.
Omg it's like looking into the future! Gotta keep an eye on what else is on here.

What's the mod called?
You know I would like to say to all the people whining about console players. Here are skyrim sales.59% were for the Xbox 360, 27% for the PS3, and 14% for the PC. Your 14 percent of the market and this one of your best selling games.Without consoles Skyrim wouldn't exist. So shut up stop whining.
rasheedqe It would the first few games were pc elusive
***** and look what happen.Just like the witcher, farcry . Without the console skyrim would be daggerfall 2,0. There is no way they can make a AAA budget game for pc.Its just not cost effective these numbers prove it.Even minecraft sells better on consoles.
rasheedqe And just remember (you probably aren't old enough) that it was the PC customers who made them huge in the first place with their previous games. They sold out like scrubs by building for console and porting to PC. That breaks the 8th commandment of good game design. You always build for PC first, then lobotomize for consoles. You do NOT forsake your original fans who MADE you for less work and faster money.
TacDyne the only reason something start on a pc first is because the game companies aren't sure people want to buy it. Pc is more like the testing ground.Console get the game when its ready for prime time.Example elder srcolls arena. They thought it would be fail.So they didn't waste money trying to put it on consoles.Arena sold well. Then daggerfall was a proof of concept.Next thing you know morrowwind is made for Xbox. And by the time skyrim came along it didn't even have controls made for a pc. It had controls made for a console.Same thing with the witcher. First one controls only made for a pc. It sold well. They said fuck the pc controls. Now it has a third person set up for a controller.I could go on and on dragon age one had a rpg traditional gameplay. It sold well now in 2 and 3 there making the controls action based.PC will never be as big as consoles. Its been like that since the first Nintendo. The pc is to complex with no industry standard. To expensive for everyone to own like a console.
rasheedqe so games should be ass so that little kiddies can enjoy them on console. Fuck off you're the cancer killing video games.
Spears should have had a 1h and 2h class, and both would have used a "Polearms" skill tree. 1h spears could've been thrown and basically looked like giant arrows of their material, but 2h spears could've gotten fancy with their designs. We're talking halberds, glaives, and even a daedric scythe for badassery points.
The thing about extra commands for companions would have really been nice...Especially if companions like Sven and Roggi Knot-Beard who have crafting skills could finally use them
Fucking Giant Mudcrab for TES 6!.
When it comes down to it, it has nothing to do with "well its a mod, go get it on the nexus or steam workshop." The fact of the matter is that most of those things in this video should have been put into the vanilla game to begin with. Or at least put them in updates like they did many other times.
I find it kind of funny to watch this now and see how much of this stuff has been added in updates and DLC. And even a lot of the stuff that wasn't there are mods for.
oh my god please add all of these!! >_
A lot of these things were implemented with community created mods, but damn, they should have been done by the actual devs and included as free DLC for consoles too. That would have earned them so many points with their fans.
Like I saw someone else say in this comment section say they probably have workers to under aliases and post some mods
Wicker _ you must not read allot of youtube comments then
Wicker _ Now reading over what past me said i guess it was kinda dumb. I tend not to think over my comments. Also there are way dumber comments then that.
Bethesda, you have an amazingly talented team! Let them incorporate their own ideas at the start so the game can ship with a lot more awesome!
At the very least, could we see these things be incorporated as mods in the Steam Workshop or on Nexus or something? Some of these things are just awesome!
You know that at the time you made that comment Skyrim had been around for 5 years and almost all of the things in this video had been released as either free updates or parts of the 3 DLCs the game has.
Enter fallout 76
So awesome to see the origin of much of the stuff they added in DLC, but mainly I'm just pissed because they didn't add the water shaders and the fat giants.
I'm glad that some of these made it into the final release of the game.
Why does nothing feel like this anymore?
That's how SKYRIM SHOULD BE... if they didn't focusing (their primal "target-group") on CONSOLES... and if they didn't care about their P.R. request - to KEEP the "11/11/11" release date!!!!
As I have read about, the SKYRIM team needed half a year MORE of developing, to make the game as perfect as they wanted...
Stuff for Free. Yeah Todd....
When u a console player and you look through the comments section :'(
Ikr :^(
+Dovah Kitty lol skyrim special edition CONSOLE MODS COMING!
Amir Rahman new problem, i dont have a next gen console i have xbox360. i guess i dont deserve it lmao. hope they have mods for 360 version because i have the legendary edition
you had me at spears
They added a lot of these, but we want more!
The waygates were added which is semi cool but only in the Vale of the Dawngaurd DLC, would've been nice for them to be added everywhere to give a slight bit if immersion to fast traveling.
ARE YOU FGUCKING KIDDING ME.
I WILL NEVER FORGIVE BETHESDA FOR NOT ADDING THESE FEATURES
FUCK
IM SO MAD RIGHT NOW, LIKE GENUINELY ANGRY.
+ghost Some of the features are added by DLC
+Taterpotato ya i know but some of the best thingd like the water and seasonal foliage werent.

Spears - www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/62609/?
Water - www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/41076/?
Sadly I have yet to discover a seasonal mid game texture changer. It's rather difficult.
***** How rude.
watch Bethesda e3 2017
Some were added.
Wish we got spears, and the wavy banners and stuff... The seasons would have been cool, too.
Upon inspecting the wiki (something I've not done for some time) I saw the one you're talking about. You're right about the similar moves, perhaps it served as a form of inspiration?
Lol almost everything is dlc
boffifis1 Nah lots of it was added for free, like kill cams for arrow kills and magic kills
+yougonasorry dlc is free too if you know where to look >:)
***** No I meant you only have to buy the game, the dlcs are free if you look in the right places
***** Piratebay :)
Z Mc'Dee Umadbro
So they added goblins but not spears?
You cant make new animations in skyrim, the graphic and animation mottor dosent allow it, the animations mods just replace unused animations.
@@danielcontreras6778 are you stupid? Modders cant do what dev can.
@@Untayza you do not have call people names
good old times, back then when Todd was the MAN!
Now you can pay extra for (some of) those features! (Even though they finished them all a week after the game came out)
So why the fuck don't we have these?
follower training is great. seasonal foliage is just a MUST HAVE. I see no downside to that. a lot of the graphical stuff like occlusion and water/underwater improvement is great as well. don't know how well it will perform though, i mean water itself dosesn't even have a shoreline. Idk where they can go with the werebear, but the new epic mounts would be awesome. dungeon enhancements i say YES. spears would be cool. the stealth enhancements are great as well, i think they're needed
