Another Cheap Knock off Edelbrock Carburetor Review

- Looks like there's another cheap knock off carburetor on the market. Is it just as awful as the other one we reviewed? We'll find out when we tear this down and pick it apart, measure it and compare it to the ACTUAL Edelbrock carburetor.

Knockoff Edelbrock, you mean Carter AFB??? Inexpensive, ok, does it work?
Any chance you can do a video on a q- jet . The old school guy say they are the best . I seen a front end digger with two and it run very good
Absolutely love the Quadrajet. I don’t use them anymore and quit rebuilding them years ago. They require a lot of time and knowledge to rebuild and tune. I’ve got all my notes on them from 30+ years ago but lost interest in them. I did a tear down video a few years ago. I might do an assembly video sometime. Gotta blow the dust off the cobwebs first. 😆
Wish they would have made a performance version with either a larger fuel bowl area or added another fuel bowl, they'd make great crabs for bigger horsepower, but oh well.
Yes Chinese stealing sucks. But honestly.. most everyone has knockoff things in their garage and home. hand tools, power tools, tool boxes, tables, chairs, tv's, dishes, Carbs are no different.
Tbh i hope this makes edelbrock bring there prices down on carbs because 800 almost a 1000 canadian for a carb is ridiculous! Not saying ill buy one of these i have 2 nice edelbrock carbs 800 avs2
Request --> a 20 minute video on "the evolution of the Edelbrock Performer (aka EPS) and related (AVS) carburetors" as told from a business perspective. Who/what/when invented it, how Carter came to be, prospered, and then what happened to them that made them dissolve / sell off the business / or whatever happened? How Edelbrock started out (performance parts in general is what I found on Wikipedia a while back - not necessarily carbs), at what point then absorbed the AFB carb product, what type of changes they made to not only the product but the factory/manufacturing process. Who the heck is Magnetti Marelli, what's their relation to Weber? And why do AFB's / Edelbrock units all say Weber on them? Make it all make sense! :) The history is as interesting as the tech.
I could do that. But to satisfy some of those questions right away. Weber held that manufacturing process for quite a number of years. So when they updated the tooling, they of course included their logo. When Magnetti Marelli bought it, and the tooling needed to be replaced, on went their logo! And finally when Edelbrock bought the manufacturing facility and the tooling needed to be replaced…..now it’s got the Edelbrock logo. Maybe we’ll dive deeper into the topic. Glad someone else likes the history side as well. 😃
Thanks for your videos, very clear to undestand. i have a 1826S Edelbrock on my 350 K5, i know that is build for off-roading but "lol" i dont do off road. This carb was already installed when i purchase the car. Can i keep it? any issue with this model? Thanks again for your work.
Yup you can keep it. The off road features won’t negatively affect its street use. God to go!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. Subscribed.
Welcome!
Cheap stuff is just that.. cheap.
The people that copied and knocked off someone else’s hard work and design should be the ones apologizing
Keep in mind they can't be the exact same of the edelbrock because of the patent licensing
Well they certainly have no problem calling it an Edelbrock carburetor in their listing on Amazon. Go search Edelbrock 1406 and tell me how many pages you have to go through to get to the ACTUAL Edelbrock 1406. They use the name and the part number right in the title. About as deceptive as it gets.
The Carter AFB is a 66 year old design. I doubt they have any patent claim on the design.
@ScottCLO go to Amazon and search Edelbrock 1406 and look at all the knock off listings that pop up. Steal the design, encroach on an established brand to sell their garbage. But like I said in the video, I’ll get plenty of people that are willing to justify it.
@@MuscleCarSolutions these knockoffs are an absolute tragedy. A brand new 1406 (a real one) is about $400 today. Add a $50 strip/tuning kit with springs / jets / etc, and maybe another $25 if you have to buy some secondary jets - so you're at about $500 shipped to your door. Now that carb - the real one - combined with an afternoon of tuning in your garage / driveway (thanks to the DETAILED manual / tuning guide, and the great instructional videos such as those by @MuscleCarSolutions and @UncleTonysGarage), and you've got a RELIABLE and WELL MADE carb that's going to last the life of your vehicle. ... or you can buy one of these s***box knockoffs for about half of that, at which point the problems and damage caused by it will render your vehicle inoperable and your blood pressure off the chart.
The Chinese Communist party have great respect and concern for patents, yeah right 🤣…. The worlds greatest poorly built copies come from China, Japan and Taiwan
Thanks for pointing out Chinese crap 😎👍👍
It’s pretty disgusting. Even more so that people are trying to return that junk to Edelbrock after swapping it out and returning the junk that didn’t work.
The one thing not being shown here is HOW IT RUNS - maybe it runs ok maybe not, but thats a big part of anything like a carb review.
@@yambo59 so if it runs ok it justifies the theft?
Assume, one more chinese step to original grade of Edelbrock. One more step & it be completely same. Beware, US producers!
Cool video.. very interesting
No need to apologize. 🇺🇸 Ever.
There's room in my trash can for both those carbs.
Can you mount a Chrysler linkage adapter on it?
Nope.
Big nut in the way.
Didn’t really concentrate on the linkage but you make a good observation. I’m wondering what other linkages won’t fit it.
lol I thought the new management fired all the long time edelbrock employees??
Gosh I hope not. I just saw them all last week!
I believe you already came into this teardown with a strong bias against imported carburetors.
A much better video would have been just putting it in a vehicle and running it.
Then you could tear it down and make comparisons to the Edelbrock which is really a Carter.
@@Robert-mz8ej and the data speaks for itself. Yes, I knew it would be awful before I tore it down. It’s not the first one I’ve seen and for sure not the last. When the on engine tests occur with all these awful knock offs, that data will confirm its deficiencies as we log it. And thank goodness Edelbrock purchased the Carter facility or it would have been gone three decades ago. Also thankful for all the internal upgrades they have done to make them better and work with todays horrible fuel.
Have you already dared to install it in any vehicle?
I don’t support thieves. Edelbrock tested it and their results were all I needed to hear.
Whats the diff, Edelbrock is just a knock off also. Carter made those carbs originally.
And Edelbrock purchased the entire Carter carburetor operation when the investment company that owned Carter at the time decided to move away from it. Can’t see the difference?
And guess who makes all the Carter carburetors today?
The sight glass for float level is handy because without a fuel pressure regulator, you get what you get out of your pump. Higher pressure will result in a higher fuel level, even if you set the floats up right as the pressure will overcome the floats resistance to a certain degree.
Then the correct fix is to get a regulator and give yourself the ability to control that pressure. Like I mentioned in the video. One of the beauties of the design is no gaskets below the fuel line. Introducing two giant holes at the fuel line and having a horrible way to seal it up takes that benefit away. With a better o-ring and gasket and a better sight glass, I can see at least sealing. But little to no benefit.
I understand the novelty of the sight hole. But that's what it is: a new potential leak spot. Set the floats right. Get the regulator . Now, drive with 100% confidence down the road. Feels better 👍
@@stuckinmygarage6220 indeed!
@@MuscleCarSolutions wait, are you sure? You are saying that the correct solution to an obvious problem and obvious solution is to in fact RTFM (follow the instructions) and send the correct fuel pressure to the carb? How dare you read the instructions and apply common sense! I would have thought the best solution would've been to buy hot garbage from China and put it on "full send". I can't wait until the Chinese knockoff Quadrajets come out - because failing upward is a "life goal" for these chuckleheads.
I think if you buy this, you get EXACTLY what you paid for. A crappy knock off. Would love to see this running compared to the Edelbrock it is "modeled" after. Thanks for thorough breakdown.
I’m torn on that. I’m sure at some point I’ll get it on the truck and do a video. But I’m also concerned about giving it too much exposure. If this one runs like the other one did, it will be just as described. Erratic. Pile of junk!
@@MuscleCarSolutions That's a good point. Maybe just throw it on the junk pile and move on.
If its anything like the knock-off Weber it's probably fine honestly.
@@Blenzo480 If you’re ok with buying from a thief. But no, I doubt this even will run right and I know it’s going to leak through those god awful sight glasses.
Hey man jw what brand this is ? Not guna buy one I'm guna make a video on carbs to stay away from
To late to judge overseas crap!
We left them take over in the 70s and 80s
Everything is made there and it's all crap!
Just pick the crap you want!
😂
They can produce quality when it’s paid for by the importer to our country. Doesn’t happen often. I don’t have issue with that. I do take issue with this theft.
I appreciate the fact you took the time to make a review, but being biased right off the bat is pretty off-putting. We know theyre going to be bad, but maybe wait towards the end of the video to sum up your point of view.
I won’t ever apologize for taking the side of American made and designed products. This isn’t the first blatantly stolen knock off we’ve reviewed. If I ever do another video on yet another knock off, I will assure you my bias will always be in favor of the people who put the money, effort and time to design and make a product, not in favor of the thief.
@MuscleCarSolutions I didn't ask for an apology, and like I said, we "the viewers" already expect the outcome of the review to be bad. If these carbs upset you so much, maybe don't give them a spotlight in the first place.
@@franciscoaguirre6402 The spotlight has already been given to them with the amount of people who are purchasing them and support these thieves. I’m sorry my bias was so upsetting to you. I can assure you it will continue if I get another one to review.
@MuscleCarSolutions keep your apology, lol. I just gave those "thieves" $150 of my money. Looks like I'm going to have to review them myself. I'll see how "bad" these bad boys are.
@@franciscoaguirre6402 and we found the real reason why this upset you.
if you buy one of these your just a thief also
You do know the edelbrock is a freaking "cheap knock off" to begin with right?
@@henryknox4511 incorrect. Edelbrock purchased the entire operation from Magnetti Marelli 15 years ago. They kept the entire production facility in NC and all the staff that has been making the Carter branded carbs. Quite a few of them still work there today.
@@MuscleCarSolutions It's a knockoff- I bought one when they first came out in 89- I don't need your INCORRECT history explanation. Carter stopped making them in 83 or 84.
@@henryknox4511 again, incorrect. The production of the carter completion series was limited, but still made well into the mid 90s. In fact, Edelbrock still produces one carter branded carburetor today.
@@MuscleCarSolutions They stopped making the carter AFB in 1984, thats wtf the edelbrock is a knock off of. Otherwise nice try.
@@henryknox4511 the AFB isn’t the same as the competition series, which is probably why you’re so confused. Edelbrock purchased that facility. You’re confusing two very different things. OE spec facility in St Louis and the aftermarket facility in Sanford.
Great service you have provided to the world sir would like to see the crap carbs installed on a dyno engine to show exactly how bad they really are ,now wouldn't that be something?👍👍
I’ve heard the results and like I said in the video, they were described as erratic. I made mention in another comment, I’m hesitant to give them any more attention and I’m not paying for dyno time to discredit it! I might slap one on the GMC and monitor AFR. I’m guessing it will be what was seen on the other. And given there’s no way to tune it, kind of hard to put it through its paces. Total fail.
Kool I figured with your connections you knew someone with a dyno Ha Ha@@MuscleCarSolutions
@@randymacsgarage Edelbrock ran the first one I reviewed on their dyno time. If they beat on it and ran it though like they would their carb and it can’t keep up, that’s all I need to know.
@@MuscleCarSolutions works for me too thank you
@@randymacsgarage if I can ever get back to putting in more time on video making, who knows. This might be a topic at some point!
And what kind of person then returns it to edelbrock , real low ljfe
Supposedly it happens a lot. Pretty low.
Worst shabby behaviour. Any other customer pays for this or your business goes bankrupt sooner or later.
@@maikgoldmann5691 I’m afraid made in the US doesn’t mean much when it’s time to break out the wallet. Sad times we live in.
@@MuscleCarSolutions What bothers me is that people get away with this. Someone now has a nice carb for cheap. Could have bought a refurbished Edelbrock for similar money and not rip off someone else 💁♂️
@@maikgoldmann5691 I agree. It’s like Edelbrock gets kicked in the junk - TWICE. Horrible people in this world.
Australian Edelbrock clones from Japan and made in Australia had sight glasses in the sides.
Yeah I agree" knockoff is the word"😮
Stealing. Plain old theft.
My old Carter AFB 3705 (Max wedge) carbs had 4 holes at the accelerator pump lever.....
@@maxweber2675 with time (and good dyno data logging) the data shows the lowest hole on the lever isn’t enough fuel shot for even the smallest of V8 engines. Maybe it worked ok on the low power mopar stuff? 😆
I hope Edelbrock is paying you well. I have both and can say the Edelbrock carburetor is now garbage in comparison to even the cheapest chinese carb "copies". The chinese machining is far better. To each their own. Pay what you like. If you're still using a carb chances are you're on a budget.
😂 Edelbrock doesn’t pay me a dime. The quality hasn’t changed. Still made at the same facility they’ve all been made at, by the same people who made the comp series Carters. Put your hands on both side by side and there’s no comparison. The chinese knock offs are just the cheapest made junk on the market.
@@MuscleCarSolutions I concur. Had one on a street rod I just bought. Purely trash. A real 1406 fixed it up right away. Mine was also the better version than the one you displayed.
don't forget the chinese have got to the moon more than us, top in the world in electronics, etc.
😆😆
If edelbrock internal parts will swap over to this knockoff. It's possible a person could save money.
@@theguy9234 they don’t
you should work with someone to dyno test all fake parts...
If you can find someone willing to donate the thousands of dollars I’d need to make that happen, I’d love to. But I’ve got three of these videos done so far with two more to go as of this moment. I’ll eventually show them on my truck and show AFR but that will be as sophisticated as I can afford.
@@MuscleCarSolutions or just have a crappy old truck and swap on all kinds of carbs. not sure why you automatically say not to buy one of these carbs without putting all of them on a vehicle and test drive them.
@@FatGuyBuilds because I’ve seen the dyno data on two of the three I’ve done already and on one future video. That’s why I can say that. And yeah that’s what my GMC was made for is that kind of testing. We’ll get to it eventually but I’m confident that it will show exactly what the data I saw shows. Erratic was how it was described and I’m quite sure given just how far these have been off when we’re measuring and comparing that there’s no other possible result. But we’ll give it a try and I’m very confident we’ll get the same results.
@@MuscleCarSolutions kool
Do YOU think the 86$usd knockoff carbs of the ford 2100/2150s are any better?
i just rebuilt my remand autloite carb for 76 F150 and it was VERy dirty and definitely runs better now but still has high idle, slight stumble off idle, and a slight miss.
I do have alow compression clyinder 12-15 less than 3 other lowest cyl and 15 more less than 3 highest cylinders.
So im figuring my symptoms may be as good as it gets with that low cylinder.
if i pull back on the throttle while idling i can make it idle slower making me think the the blades are out of alignment or worn shafts or something
i think i have all vac leaks plugged with only brake booster, distributor, pcv and tranny vac lines left hooked up, plugged everything else
i already spent 1500 cdn fixing little things on this truck[belts, hoses, brakes etc] , i dont wanna buy a new carb if its gonna be useless.
BUT 86 usd is cheap fix IF IT WORKS better
Isn't an edelbrock a knock off itself?
They literally bought the former Carter production facility and kept all the employees when Carter decided they were no longer interested in producing the completion series. Early causality of private equity. Edelbrock picked up the ball and has continued to carry it, and make some big upgrades.
@@MuscleCarSolutions didn't know that. Makes sense.
@@frankrizzo2724 I’ve had the opportunity to tour the facility in Sanford NC twice. Still a lot of 30 year + folks working there who worked for Carter, Weber, Magneti Marelli and now Edelbrock. They even still make some Carter carburetors today. Funny how that works out.
One could easily put thread locker on those butterfly shaft screws just to be sure
Maybe a 450 cfm
That slight a difference I’d guess it’s about a 570-590. If I get a chance to use a flow bench again in the future, I’ll try to remember to bring it. Such junk!
Ive got one and it idles fine, accelerates fine but while just cruising it surges terrible. I have contacted the company I bought it from on Ebay, and they keep telling me to adjust it so it will work but I have done everything and Im going to send it back and get a Edelbrock 1406. I wanted to try it because we have used a lot of the Chinese small engine carbs with good luck but this one is JUNK.
Kind of hard to adjust when they offer no calibration support in hardware or tech help. Surging should be a common issue with these. As we noted when the boosters and bore sizes aren’t optimal, it’s going to hunt for fuel based on the signal the intake is giving it. Just doesn’t know how to respond because all they did was try to knock it off and I’ll go out on a limb and say zero development testing.
Great video thankyou.
Would love a follow up review with the VRS-4150 and how that's going? Been very little talk about it after a lot of fanfair!
Right now Slant Daily Garage is running it on his slant 6! He’s got a couple videos on it. It will probably be spring time before I get around to it on the GMC and likely late next year before the 950 (when it’s released) goes on the Chevelle. Haven’t had any time to get all the other content knocked out first!
Fuel inlet is very different.
Can u list the two carb brands?
I like the sight glass, IF, IF it won't leak.
Not necessary. The only thing it would provide is peace of mind for someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing and defeats the benefit of no gaskets below the fuel line. Recipe for disaster.
@@MuscleCarSolutions Wow... Does U mean that holley carb with glasses is bad design? I dont think so. It helps to see a fuel level & recognize a carb filter/fuel pump problems as well.
Also, in this case, if a chinese float become to death, u can get a show)) They could be install a webcam inside)) ups.. be quite..
I’ve got to laugh when he says he’s reviewing knock off Edelbrock carb. I guess he doesn’t know the Edelbrock is a knock off ot the original Carter AFB
Not even remotely. Edelbrock purchased the entire Carter manufacturing facility when the private equity company that owned the brand decided it wasn’t worth keeping. Only a few Carter part numbers remain. Guess who makes them now? And by some of the same people who have worked in that Sanford faculty for 30+ years.
I would like to try one I don’t think it would be bad
Join the thieves, become one.
Why in the world would a manufacturer actually accept a knockoff, AND replace with an authentic peice? Did i hear that correctly?
A retailer returned it to Edelbrock as a warranty. Meaning, some loser bought the knock off, realized it was garbage so they bought an Edelbrock carb and stuck the knock off into the box and gave it back to the retailer and got their money back. Happens very frequently. People will but any carburetor back in the box and the retailers that sell a ton of them will take back anything.
