Sea Ray 240 Gas to Diesel Swap - Servicing and Starting 1.7L Mercruiser Diesel Preinstall

  • We bought this Sea Ray 240 with a 5.7 gas ( petrol ) and we are swapping it to a Mercrusier Isuzu 1.7L turbo diesel. There are several reasons. We are int he Philippines that is a developing nation and lacks infrastructure and services for this type of boating. It is literally 100 years behind much of the world when it comes to power boats and marinas for private use not commercial. Yes they have canoe type out rigger boats and those have been used for hundreds of years but not much in modern boating. If we have issues on the water there is no boat two company or boat service company to come tow you in or repair you on the water. The coast guard is limited as well so don't count on that either. We need reliability and diesel provides way more of that than gas does. Some of the common issues with gas engines in boats is ignition failures , sensors, fuel issues and dangerous leaks. This type of diesel is very basic in what makes it operate and eliminates so many points of possible failure. Next is safety of no explosive fuel as diesel does not have this issue. Lastly is fuel economy. This Mercruiser 1.7l turbo diesel which is now labeled as a Cummins diesel with current marketing of Mercruiser and Cummins gets 4 to 5x the fuel economy than the 5.7l gas engine. This is of great importance so It is cost effective and safer to transport diesel to the boat than gas. There is no marinas to pull into and fuel up. This means you will rely on cans and transporting it usually via tricycles.
    There will be a small downside and that is a little less power. Not too much less and diesels have far more torque and this can be handled thru proper prop , pitch and gearing to put it real near the gas engine for top speed.

    I have a friend who did a similar swap, he had a 24’ skipjack with a 5.7, swapped to the same 1.7 Cummins. I wen out off shore with him fishing, what a sweet boat that was, good cruise speed up on plane, got close to 7mpg as well. It did sit a little awkward due to the difference in engine weight, solved that by moving fuel tank aft.

      So nice to hear this. This too is a 24' and 5.7. We figured the differences and I will be shaving about 400lbs off of it. I plan to offset with lithium solar batteries and a second fresh water wank. I do thank you for sharing your experience in a project almost the same.

Well it's not it's real maiden voyage but it is since it's rebuild. Loving this boat build series. Living the life brother. I love it. Hope to be there one day myself doing the same thing. Great video! I like your DIY experience James. I'm nowhere near your knowledge level, but it's a joy to watch you figure things out. My first thought when you mentioned a "sandblaster" was "where is he going to get that"? Then you mentioned that you brought it with you! Given the tropical climate and rust issues, it would seem to be something high in demand out there!

    • @TexasFilipino
      @TexasFilipino  Год назад +2

      It was already painted. Please realize this is a saltwater boat. Salt gets in everything in all kinds of ways. A engine crankcase breathes and it will draw in salt mist over time and that salt will damage the metals especially something like that sheet metal pan I know your thinking is that oil is in it and no way it can rust but you would be highly wrong to think that. The previous damage to this pan was from the salt in fact and why it needed to repaired.

    • @TexasFilipino
      @TexasFilipino  Год назад +2

      I used sand from the beach so for your knowledge also here is some information
      "When we talk about silica exposure we are talking about crystalline silica or quartz. Construction workers could be exposed to silica when cutting, grinding, drilling, sanding, mixing, or demolishing materials containing silica.
      The size of the airborne silica particles determines the amount of risk. Smaller particles can be inhaled deep into the lungs where they can cause damage. Larger particles, such as beach sand, are not as great a concern because they are too large to inhale."
