    Great video Ben. Going into West Tisted next weekend. You mentioned being high and using a lot of the runway. I am not an instructor but in that aircraft (and others) if you plan to land on the numbers and then have an engine failure... don't be worried about using the runway length if it is expedient and safe to do so I would say. I used to do a lot of short grass fields and was always proud by how short I could get it in until an airline pilot made the point about an engine failure on approach - not unheard of as this is where changes to power etc. are made.

    Safety comm can be a menace. Lat year I flew to Farway Common. Announcing my arrival I was told told to hold as an aircraft was stuck on the threshold. Strange as it looked deserted. After circling a few minutes I called again and was asked if | could see a particular aircraft in bound, and I was number 2 behind it. I saw the aircraft, but some distance away and not flying towards the airfield. After a few more minutes confusion, it was actually Branscombe, who were hosting the LAA fly-in, replying to my calls. This despite me prefixing all calls with "Farway Common Traffic"! In their hubris they assumed any call that day was to them.

    I agree that West Tisted is awesome - and they hold a vintage aircraft fly-in once a year which is a hoot. Fantastic, immaculate, loooooooong strip and enormous parking area in front of enormous hangars around back of the trees....and all privately owned. My dream fulfilled - when the lottery comes up trumps ;o) Colemore Common is a cute place too - usually deserted!

      Hi Andy,
      I'm sorry to hear that, so near yet so far. I'm sure you'll pick it up again.
      My mate is in the same boat, at Kemble. Both our dad's, plus a.n.other used to fly (PPLs) and share a Cessna. He's been poorly too.
      He and I use various flight SIMS and joy sticks, yokes, plus pedal rudders it all helps.
      He has a SIM for a Eurostar (G-CEFZ) and a C42 (G-KFCA), has configured them as best he can and he has a reasonable model of Kemble airfield too. It all helps.
      I think that my mate said one of his instructors is a whizz with flight SIMS too.
      Good luck to you, hope things improve soon.

    Great video! Noob question here: how do you get the QFE for West Tisted if it’s an uncontrolled aerodrome?

    • @CudHppr
      @CudHppr 4 года назад +1

      Get QNH from departing field or LARS, check elevation on map of destination field, take it off the height on altimeter = QFE. You can do it by working on 30 feet per 1 mb but I find this way works faster and easier! Sometimes have to do this in the evening if ATC have gone home. Say I'm flying at 2500 feet on QNH, I know airfield elevation is 500, I knock off 500 from the altimeter, that's my QFE. Works well when I've done it. Just requires a little care adjusting altimeter if it's bumpy!

    • @BenAtkinsonVideos
      @BenAtkinsonVideos  4 года назад +1

      Sean Duffy hey Sean - as Dave mentioned above - I start with the Kemble QFE, I know that’s 430ft ASL, then from that in the air I can change to QNE by adding 430ft to the altimeter. And do the reverse for West Tisted but remove their ASL height of about 500ft I think. But yeh - you get the gist...

As you are trying to build up a followship please could you cut back on the adverts, really ruins your excellent video I know the revenue you are likely to get as you are building the channel will be low and you're far better off getting subs and views at the beginning which are more likely without the annoying ads.
