@@bes12000 No, he installed 1.08 which was the latest at the time of the other video. 1.09 came out after that last video was put up, (Jayz was out of town yesterday, reason there was no podcast). @Silver Joystix tbh i can't complain too much, i have a 1070ti which still plays pretty much everything in 1080p and some lighter games in 1440p though i am thinking about an upgrade soon.
Also, memory get retrained due to Fastboot. The reason behind that is with Fastboot on, the PC is resetting to default for certain settings when you shutdown from with Windows. That's also the reason that if you're running a full AMD build, Wattman/Radeon Software will tell you it out GPU settings back to default due to system failure. TURN OFF FASTBOOT FOR NOW.
That just reminded me of all of the Wattman messages I kept getting when I was using my 6700xt before I got my 3080 ftw3. That is not something I miss lol.
I have a full AMD system and I haven't actually had that pop up warning in a while, used to happen on a semi regular occasion but I haven't actually seen it in a while.
Fastboot should be turned off when changing hardware.... The funny thing is, my system boots faster with fastboot turned off than the one showed in the video.
"Nobody will ever have thought of that combo" is going to become my lived experience when my 4090 arrives because it's going in a first gen Threadripper 1900x system. I expect smoke, and for leprechauns to come out and mock me.
I think this is more related to the motherboard bios config than Asus VBios. Those newer cards have default EFI frame buffer for boot, you may need to disable fastboot and enable CSM or disable it entirely depending on what's your current config. The motherboard must read the graphic card's bios then run it in order to enable external graphic. This sounds like a lazy bios job.
This is a known AM5 issue that has been fixed with a new BIOS revision that has been available for 3 days. All motherboard vendors sent out warnings about this issue to the press 3 weeks ago. Another Jay blunder.
AsRock is just garbage, that is the reason, nothing to do with the videocard. Even with 3090 founders edition it boots too slow... shows the Bios too slow. That AsRock has some serious problems. My Asus ROG Strix B460-F boots faster without fastboot. To boot that slow it means there are some problems or just the mainboard is pure trash. I'm sure if the mainboard was MSI or Gigabyte it would have also worked better. To put 3090 ROG strix with that abomination of a board.... why not put it with ROG strix mainboard..... 🤣
@@Slav4o911 I'm actually running an MSI board and it's the same behaviour as in the video. I'm currently waiting on my 4090 order to come through so I installed my old 2070 (also MSI) for the interim. It does memory training every boot, it doesn't show video in bios and first time in Windows I can't begin to describe the distortion effects and jittering I saw on my screen. 😬 I'm anxiously waiting for MSI to get their act together and push out a bios that actually fixes things. The only one they have on their site made the bios unstable and it is now impossible to activate expo profiles on the ram. Early adopter glory - fully realized. 😂 So happy this video exists simply so I don't feel so stupid anymore for not being able to get my computer working properly. 😅
That behavior is consistent with the card being detected as secondary... maybe disabling the IGP instead of leaving it on Auto could make it work as intended.
I don't even want a 40 series card because I got a 3080ti about a year ago which is more than enough for my 4k gaming but I still love watching videos about the newest technology. The only regret was I was too impatient to wait and I bought MSI card for $1700 on Newegg...that wasn't a marketplace card either, that was MSRP at the time!
I bought my 3080ti literally 90 days before the prices crashed and I am kicking myself. The 3080TI for me is still too slow at 1440p as I am poiled with 144hz/144 fps gaming monitors OMG if you never played like that you won't go back. Pretty happy with my 3080ti, I wasn't planning to upgrade from a 2080, but when I saw a 3080ti (one with a cool built-in display at that) for just under $900, I had to get it, very happy with it.
Got a 3090 last week. Its half the price of 4090 here right now and also 4090 is a lot more expensive than 3090 was at release. I hope my 3090 will survive until 60 series cards or longer. 8 years ago I bought a medium spec pc with some high end components for the price of a 4090 today. Its insane.
@@timothygibney159 I can play just about any game on my PC 4k @ 60-120 fps unless it's something insane like Doom Eternal which is like 180 fps. I got the MSI gaming x trio with an 11th generation Intel chip.
Seeing this a lot online and one time in person with various motherboards and configurations, the easiest solution has almost always been swapping the GPU out with another one (any GPU doesn't have to be another 4090) to make the system stop and take another look at what's being put in it. It's not a purely AMD issue, it's probably just more likely with Zen4 because you're taking two "bleeding edge" products and mixing them, in effect doubling your chance of seeing a quirk.
I'm sorry, but im beginning to think you've only been following GPU launches for a few months because the entire launch of the 30-series was a massive sh*t-show from start to end with people raging at every card launch.

You made a great point about voting with your wallet Jay, I just got a second hand 3070 TUF for 415$USD. I just dont see 40series as being worth it for what I need.
There won’t be any in stock anyway so it doesn’t really matter. Really thinking about going AMD this go round. The 6900 is looking nice and price has dropped a lot.
I just got a 6800xt at $600, its way faster than I thought it was going to be. I saw asus tuff 6900 was at $700. If you have an amd CPU the smart access memory really boosts performance as well.
Hit the nail on the head, My main system is in fact a delidded 6700K and I will be putting a 4090 in there unless I end up getting my 7950X before the 4090 (stock issues). For gaming it would be a complete waste but for rendering applications it should be unaffected by the CPU. (iray specifically)
@@_Clivey I know, it's just the EVGA is brought to mind because of the title and general news surrounding Nvidia, I know the issue is not in the GPU itself.
Had same problem with Asus X670E-I and Inno3D x3 oc - I was seriously concerned after a BIOS update and still a blank screen. Thanks to Jay this issue has been spearheaded and troubleshot by the best! Thanks man!
Holding off on the 40 series for now. I got lucky to pick up discounted the 3090. But did end up getting B650 mobo and AMD CPU. First AMD since the FX series. So far very happy with the system.
Well thanks for doing us the service of being the guinea pig of this new platform 😂 I just built my first pc last year with a 5800x and 3070 but I got a 3080ti a month ago so I'm sticking with this for a long time. If anything I might go am5 with the 3080ti. I'm just playing in 1440p anyways so the 3080ti is very very over kill. I'm getting way more frames than my monitor can put out.
2 Questions. 1. Would you prefer them to start with the lower end cards (4050, 4060) first? 2. Would you prefer them scale the cost to the card or the card to the cost? Great video keep up the good work.
I think people have also realized that for 1080p and 1440p (which the majority of us are on) the options that are available like the 20 and 30 series, AMD 6000 series cards are more than good enough to play games at decent frame rates for years to come... 40 series cards are more of a luxury than a necessity when it comes to your everyday gamer.
Most people wouldn't try to get the latest hardware. Steam hardware survey from September still has 10 and 20 series cards as the top results. Even something like 3070 is "luxury" for people who are not accustomed to spend over $2000 on PCs.
Yeah. I would only go for one of the newer cards, if it was ( of course ) financially sane, and for hardware encoder for my video work i do now and then. But i aint dropping 1000 USD on a damn GFX card, not even if someone made a damn game worth playing, but all games are boring stuff i cant even be bothered to play a demo off cuz 2 minutes of demo footage video give it all up. I am not even going to update my other hardware, the 12 core threadripper will do just fine for what i do, and TBH most times i am on my laptop connected to this 32" screen as it is after all using a fraction of the power the threadripper use, and Denmark are just about the most expensive place in the world to buy a KWH So yeah might get a "OLD" GFX card or a new one and run it on the slower PCI-e slot this motherboard have. but still get good enough performance if someone made a bloody game worth playing. I am thinking maybe get a better 1440p screen, this one are just a cheapo HDR400 screen.
The crazy thing is the strix lineup is mainly known for wide compatibility. I mean that's the main thing that it's publicized is that it's compatible for a wide variety of components above anything else... 🤔🤔🤔
I had this issue before with Nvidia cards. Sometimes if you just boot off the motherboard display and then shutdown, you can switch back to the GPU and it will work. For some reason booting windows can kind of reset stuff and get the motherboard in clean slate. I think it's something to do with uefi bios glitching up.
I never knew that you could update the VBIOS through Precision X1! Just did and can see why I was having issues with ReBAR now with how old the VBIOS was. Thanks!
Hey Jay, this video is very timely for me. Early adopter here with the same card, except I'm seeing the OPPOSITE behavior to what you describe here. I can get BIOS signals just fine, it's when Windows starts that I lose video signal. It doesn't happen EVERY time, but it happens a lot. It happens when I restart or shut down, and usually I have to cold start the system (disconnect PSU power) to get it come back. Watching the issues you're having makes me think I'm not totally crazy. For what it's worth, I did a clean Windows 11 install and what I saw was I had zero issues... until I installed the driver. I'm hoping the ASUS sees your video and takes a look, because it really smells like something is off at the VBIOS or drivers here. Happy to collaborate or corroborate any testing or findings you want (and can share system specs if you'd like, but I'm in a 12900K platform). PS Love the channel!
Its not crazy to believe that a lot of people will attempt to use a 4080/4090 gpu on an i7 6700k since replacing a motherboard and cpu is a much more involved process than upgrading gpu. I'm still using an i7 6700k, but upgraded my 1070 gpu to a 3080 last year. I know I have to upgrade my motherboard and cpu eventually, but I honestly don't see the need yet since most games run absolutely beautifully still. I guarantee that there are other people in the same predicament that don't feel like getting a new motherboard/cpu when most of what they play runs great despite bottlenecks.
ASRock mobos are notorious for booting without showing the UEFI splash screen at boot. They have an app, Boot to UEFI, for this reason that will boot you straight to the UEFI. Also make sure CSM is disabled because some new GPUs will not give a screen with it enabled at all. Usually restarting a few times on an ASRock board will make it show the splash screen so you can enter UEFI. They also have an option in the UEFI to hold power for x number of seconds to boot straight in to UEFI.
The reason why I'm not getting a 4000 series is my 3070 is not even 6 months old . That's how long I had to wait to get one and I know a handful of ppl in the same boat as me .
Just recently got a 3060ti, tbf its less that its because i just upgraded and more that for the price the 40 series just really doesnt seem worth it...
I’m in the “y’all are waiting for AMD” group. Unless AMD is a complete fail here, I might pick up their flagship GPU after early adopter woes get sorted. I’m not sure I’d even want an Nvidia GPU this time around, and I’m not sure the thing would even fit in my standard ATX case.
I really think that along with the msrp gouging, Nvidia burned a lot of goodwill with the high-end enthusiast market after the 3090 ti launch this year. Pumping that up and trying to push that on buyers for 2 grand only to have this blow it out of the water at a similarly inflated, but still significantly lower msrp barely 6 months later. Pandering to the crypto market really ends up feasting on their own tail given how hard it'll be to go anywhere but down from those highs. Along with some of the head-scratching compromises this card has, you can really feel how much Nvidia is just clambering for every scrap of margin they can get rather than try to put out decent value products (and even high-end gear like the 80 tis of yesteryear used to actually be somewhat decent value even if they weren't "value products"). End of the day enthusiasts are gonna enthusiast and there's only so much game in town. But AMD has a good opportunity here to get some serious points from how disillusioned people are becoming with the enthusiast gaming market.
I absolutely love that they have finally put an IGPU on their main CPU's. Whether its for diagnostic purposes or daily use. Someone did a video and showed that the IGPU could run GTA5 @ 1080p and get good frames with a 7600X. I cant wait to see what happens with a proper APU. Surely we are nearing the end of a need for low end GPU's.
Seems to me like GPU is not able to talk to motherboard's UEFI properly which in turn leads to motherboard to think there is new HW every time which triggers it's HW discovery routines including doing memory training again (something is wrong here, don't know what so let's check everything). I wonder how it would behave if the system was switched to legacy boot mode (if possible). Also saw similar behavior in server space some time ago; when there was a lot of system memory and GPU memory result was some of the devices were not working within OS due to motherboard resources not being distributed/assigned properly. Updating system ROM usually fixed that or temporarily disabling or re-seating some of the devices could be used as a workaround.
"It just works". These words give me trust issues in the recent years. I leave early adopters to pioneer the growing pains of a launch, so they can help Nvidia with ironing out initial issues, sometimes issues can be warranty related. And the let the scalpers run their course on the price
I _LOVE_ that you said, "something like a 6700k" ... which is what I have (along with a 1080ti). I laughed pretty hard thinking what a silly move that would be ...upgrading to a 4090 and keeping my current CPU. Oh to have the funds to upgrade all the things. ...to what I'm hoping will be all things great from AMD. Vote with one's wallet, indeed. Good stuff.
Thing is in reality there is nothing wrong with a 6700k (I still use one for a Truenas box), it's a competent CPU and a 1080ti is good enough for almost any rasterised game. Not buying marketing bs hype has saved you a lot of money.
Having the funds so you can, still doesn't mean you should either. I'm on a 8700k and 1080 and it's enough for me for now. I want to build a new system for the fun of it, but my current system is working well enough for me.
I had the same issue with AMD 5000 and 3080 back when they were first released. I had to update NVIDIA Graphics Firmware. Before doing that, unplugging and plugging HDMI would also work sporadically. If GPU was not detected, you could not have booted into Windows, BIOS would have returned a GPU error code, there's no other way around. It has to do with display firmware.
Just booted up my new system today, 7700X Strix X670E-A, Strix 4090. Used the same drives/W10 install from my last PC, just needed a wifi driver, good to go. Feels like I haven't skipped a beat.

Speaking of early adopter issues, the 4090 and Varjo Aero combo is currently causing severe stuttering in what seems to be most if not all titles. Still not determined if it's an Nvidia or a Varjo issue

Definitely voting with my wallet on this one; Statements like "Double the MSFS performance" doesn't sit well with me, when it's a CPU bound game. I don't appreciate being spoken to like I'm an idiot. I'll be perfectly happy with my 3080 ti for quite some time...which most of us were only just able to finally buy this year btw. lol so theres that.
dlss 3 is defintely a sales man trick to anyone who cares about latency. hardware unboxed saw in cyber punk where 100+ fps on dlss3 had similar input latency to native 40
Well one trick you can try is taping up the PCI-E pins B5 and B6, for some strange interactions such as memory related weirdness can be resolved on some PCI-E devices by obscuring these pins. This is especially true for server hardware like HBAs, RAID Controllers and the like where the SMBus is used for other types of communication, for an example there are instances of a whole bank of memory disappearing due to this SMBus, and once you taped them (Deny electrical conductivity) or removed the card, the missing memory channel came back.
The Asus Strix 4090 may have an available v-bios update, but to get it , you need to be running the manufacturer-specific software. Similar to how EVGA's (Precision X) software only works on EVGA-branded cards. Gigabyte (AORUS_ENGINE) & Sapphire (TRIXX) also have similar v-bios update features for their own specific brand of video cards. It's also likely that other GPU brands include support for v-bios updates, such as Zotac, MSI, Asrock, XFX, etc.
I actually don't think it's the price putting people off this, at least not in the way you might think. I think it's more that people are determined to get their money's worth out of the 3070 or 6600XT or whatever they paid way too much for last year. The LAST thing they want is to stay on the upgrade treadmill, they're gonna enjoy what they have hell or high water.

Try using a different displayport on the GPU, I've found that some configurations will define one of them as the "main" display output and you'll get strange behaviour when a different output is used.
if we have such comprehensive memory training on this generation could one of the manufacturers extend that out to a bios function for all timings? automatic memory overclocking would be real nice
My basic response to that is... do you want to wait 2 hours for a memory test each time the timings are changed? Cause that's basically what you'd have to do each time you adjust the memory. I personally think it's better off to have to manually set the xmp/docp profile. This whole new expo thing is just going to cause more headaches.
Same issues. 7900X with a Gigabyte X670 and Gigabyte 4090. It just boots randomly, but not all the time. Even after it booted the first time, it will not always give you an image. I also don’t believe this is a driver issue, because the UEFI boot screen also does not show in those cases.
This reminds me of the VBIOS issue with 10 series cards and monitors using DisplayPort 1.2 which required an update from Nvidia. It had the same behavior with no output from the BIOS but worked in Windows. Out of curiosity, do you get different behavior if you change the DP mode on the monitor or use different DP ports on the STRIX? Could it be defaulting to a different port even though it’s not active? Or maybe the board just doesn’t recognize it as a video device and is enabling output on the onboard video port instead, even when not connected.
I think this is it. I had this happen with my 980 ti, this exact behaviour, except it only happened when using the monitor with DP. When using another monitor with HDMI it just worked. This was on an Asus prime z690-p and 12600k. No longer happens when I installed my 3080. Just weitd stuff

I agree, this is likely a VBIOS issue. It is behaving similarly to unsupported video cards on Mac Pros. Once the OS initializes, you can use them, but during boot you don't get the splash screen nor do you have access to the Boot Options. Flashing the VBIOS can fix it, if there is a compatible one available, otherwise, you have to keep the original GPU for use when you need to diagnose issues.
have you thought about maybe trying the see if you get a splashscreen while using HDMI on the graphics card? What you are experiencing there is an AM5 thing....its the same thing that every reviewer has shown so far while booting the first time with the AM5 chips ....Its not a problem with the GPU at all.
I had a similar issue, but in reverse, with a EVGA motherboard and a much older, not newer version video card. It was a motherboard BIOS issue. On boot the board did not recognize the video card even though fans spun up and all of that, no picture out. Reverting the BIOS to an earlier version resolved the issue. The debug code stopped on a code indicating the board was attempting to initialize the onboard graphics on the CPU, but it was a Ryzen 5000 CPU with no onboard graphics. It never reached a point where it would load Windows.

I got that message today after my first boot using fastboot, and that explains it.
It is an AsRock motherboard, they are notoriously garbage.

If you have a 3090 there's no reason to get a 40 series.
I am not even going to update my other hardware, the 12 core threadripper will do just fine for what i do, and TBH most times i am on my laptop connected to this 32" screen as it is after all using a fraction of the power the threadripper use, and Denmark are just about the most expensive place in the world to buy a KWH
So yeah might get a "OLD" GFX card or a new one and run it on the slower PCI-e slot this motherboard have. but still get good enough performance if someone made a bloody game worth playing.
New generation of computing hardware means lots of bios and driver fix's but it will be awesome after all the updates

I was still using a 2500K as recently as 2020.
It's not a Video Bios issue it just requires a AM5 motherboard BIOS update.
The more information released about the 4000 series, the happier I am I jumped on the 3000 series while the prices have dropped.
You should pretty much always buy previous gen when new gen launches. It’s less about price but more about the platform being mostly issue free.
You always have those early adopter issues. The 30 series had them as well.
Congrats. You did EXACTLY what Nvidia wanted. Happy you got a 30 series card though.
5:00 perfect timing jay.
There's also a good chance you'll need a new PSU too. I'm hoping if nothing else, the new AMD cards are less thirsty.

Before doing that, unplugging and plugging HDMI would also work sporadically. dlss 3 is defintely a sales man trick to anyone who cares about latency. hardware unboxed saw in cyber punk where 100+ fps on dlss3 had similar input latency to native 40
Gigabyte (AORUS_ENGINE) & Sapphire (TRIXX) also have similar v-bios update features for their own specific brand of video cards. if we have such comprehensive memory training on this generation could one of the manufacturers extend that out to a bios function for all timings? automatic memory overclocking would be real nice

Asus released a BIOS update for their X670E boards on 10-21-22. The Asus Tuf OC 4090 performs extremely well with the 7950x on these boards. Many thanks to my Bros at Guru 3d for helping my system perform flawlessly. Thanks Endbase.
This is why I wait for a couple of months until they solve the bios issues etc. So I will wait until next February for my 7600X upgrades. :)
The word “couple” means TWO. No more or less. So if you waited a couple months then that would be December.
You meant to say a FEW months. The word FEW means 3-4 months. THAT would take you to your February date.
Yeah about to build a system for my wife... going to stay with the 3000 series like my own for now.
While others are making videos creating fomo, Jay is keeping it honest. Thank you.
ISSUE report: MSI SuprimX is rebooting X570 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB3 with Corsair SF750 Platinum (PSU not the issue, it ran 3090Ti). Screen comes on but no image is shown. Then goes No signal and reboots after 10sec. I guess it's a reboot bases on what RGB ligts on keyboard are doing. USing latest 3.53 bios.
I wound't play along with that AMD nonsense either! Get a proper Intel platform on the bench!
I have a friend who bought a 1060 and paired it with a 5800x while he was waiting for prices to drop and we got no image with DP. Then, HDMI worked perfectly and we installed drivers. Only then would DP work, but only in Windows and not the bios or start up screen.
When ever a new device comes out, I always wait and see if all the bugs are gone to get the best experience possible.
im having all these same issues with my 7950X 4090 Strix x670e-e. Anyone have support threads?
Just a year or so into a 3080TI build, no plans to upgrade until probably 6xxx at this point, been on the 1440p train for 7 years or better now and with 4xxx series it looks like it will finally be viable to upgrade my screens to 4k.
My MSI RTX Gaming Trio is getting black screen in the middle of installing the driver, I have ROG maximus hero z690, Gskill 128GB ram, i9 1200 unlocked, ang 1200w thor PSU, all bios updated, switched win 10 and 11, did DDU, wasted 2 weeks figuring out, always in the middle of driver installation, black screen 😭😭😭
I'm having the same problem Right now. Any fix?
Same exact problem here, 4090 strix oc/7800x3d/Asus Hero Crossfire MB, 32gb ram 6000mhz corsair dominator.
any fix?
@@abdullahal8arniDid you fix it?
Fixed it?
I love this channel I have learned so much and am still learning so much from this channel. I also love watching the other nerds argue in the comments on here lol.
Ive watching jaytwocent since 2013 i think . Good job My friend . 🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴
We had a i9-10900KF with rtx 3090... customer would only get beeps. We found out that in Gigabyte Motherboard with the KF series. It needed to see HDMI on POST to POST . Customer was using DP, and we were using HDMI in shop. Connected his monitor via HDMI and worked fine. We spoke with Gigabyte support and they said it's due to the Intel KF series not having IGPU.
Just discovered that you Need to clear CMOS with the 4090 installed in my x570 taichi!
If I lived by a micro center I'd be in line as well!!!
Hey Jay, Last month or so I have had to search for your videos not showing up as usual in my home page of youtube. not sure if its just me. just thought I'd comment. thanks for the great content as always.
What you are experiencing there is an AM5 thing....its the same thing that every reviewer has shown so far while booting the first time with the AM5 chips ....Its not a problem with the GPU at all.
im going from a 2080 super FE to a 4090 cant wait just waiting on the x3d launch since i have the 4090 already
Thanks Jay for this update ....no buying one of those there be trouble to be fix in coming months way to soon way to expensive ...lets see the AMD proposal and than decide...
I have the same problem, but with the 4090 FE and Gigabyte x670 elite ax motherboard.
