I'm not normally one for long you tube videos, but just listening to Michael recall his car history was absolutely captivating. Thank you Michael for telling us your story, and thank you James for enabling us to hear it. I hope the fund raising continues growing from strength to strength.
Fantastic video and a great story teller - I can just see “An Essex Farmer drives” as a huge channel, taking old Ferrari’s for a spin and taking us back to a time when super cars where rare and knickers where much bigger!
What a very lucky man a superb storyteller. It does show how the world and especially the UK has deteriorated in many ways over the last sixty years. Still, let's focus on the cars and a charmed life enjoying them all.
I am 2 years older and I remember the cars I had too. In Oz we didn't get access to the Ferrari and Lambos, but I had the MGs, and Fords and even a 1967 Prince Skyline GTR and the Lotus Cortina. Great Video Jay. I can honestly say that he and I lived in a great time. Oh and the motorbikes ,
At first I thought I wouldn't want to listen to someones stories about cars they've had. After the first few minutes I was hooked and had to stay 'til the end. Great work!
Loved the story of the Lotus Cortina overtaking them - remember well having a tussle with one of those in my Dolomite Sprint around Lake Taupo in the 90's. Loads of fun.
I bumped into Michael at a car show somewhere and got chatting to him about his Lotus having taken some photos of it. He asked me to email the photos to him, which I was more than happy to do. The importance of Michael became more apparent after I watched JayEmm's video first time round.
Like most on here I'm a proper petrol head and I for one had seen this interview before...problem is I forget what you have already seen. This interview was so special that I had no problem watching again...what a history. Great Job Jem.
Michael I am so really glad to hear that you are a blessed Grandfather with male descendants to pass your legacy on to … so many of the cars you have owned and driven mean a lot to a lad like me from the Antipodes and the late Fifties … not so many of the Ferraris but pretty much the bulk of your memories are almost like I was watching. Yet I was right across the other side of the world and have never made the trip to Europe. I’ve had the pleasure of Restoring Mk2 Jaguars in NZ and working with many English immigrants in my time and appreciate that the little things they made and were proud of helped build your eclectic society … nice to see you survived the big C for now, may it be history … a most pleasurable couple of hours in your virtual presence as many will agree … keep on for the Grandies …. Granddads forever !
Hi Michael, Rob Hill here, long time no see! Great to see you looking so well and to hear your amazing tales of exotic car ownership. I knew that you'd owned some lovely cars but it's fantastic to hear the stories behind them! All the best, Rob.
Having seen some of this previously, I really didn’t mind one bit taking it all in again. I could probably listen to Michael all day and then some. What a life, what a story, what a guy 🇬🇧 thanks again James for bringing this gentleman into our home, it was just an utter pleasure 😘
Wow! I loved every moment of this interview and I will be looking up Michael's books. What an amazing Gentleman. I'll also be searching for the previous video mentioned. Thank you both, sincerely.
Very enjoyable stories, which struck a note with me, as I was also born in 1947 & am now enjoying our grandchildren much more than I ever imagined. Your tale of the Ferrari wheel collapsing reminded me of a young woman who I worked with who was raising her sisters two young children. They were orphaned when their father (a dentist) and mother were killed (1975 ?) in a V12 Ferrari whose wheel disintegrated at high speed and they crashed off the road. This was in Australia, where I live, however I spent a few informative years in UK in the late 60s to mid 70s and remember well the petrol-crisis era. The worth of the UK Pound was incredibly low. Incidentally I bought a Bristol motor car from the Filton factory (where they were making the Concorde in the next hanger) and shipped it back to Australia. On arrival the next car driven off the ship after mine was, I reckon, that Miura. I recall falling in love with it and immediately thinking I had made a big mistake by not buying a Miura instead !
A motoring gentleman telling and recalling his rich automotive life history that is now committed to print for all to read and enjoy. For those of us that are of the same era we also hold fond memories from this period of both cars and people , we share your passion and wish you well.
What a fascinating guy with some great stories and experiences. Sometimes you can kick yourself for selling a a car for £5000 thats worth £500k 50 years later. What can you do? You've enjoyed the journey and used these cars rather than having to treat them as priceless museum pieces. Really glad you have shared this with us
I’ve always been interested in cars, but I find the content on RUclips to be a very mixed bag of dull and poorly produced content. I stumbled onto this video early this morning while roaming around here and I have now made myself late for my job after spending two hours uninterrupted of enjoying these stories. The manner and civility of the gentlemen telling them, his grace and class are the difference from the same types of stories told by others. Thank you very much and I will absolutely order some of the books in the next few minutes.
Thank you. I have found the RUclips video. For a few seconds the car can be seen parked on the side of the road ...4 seconds in. ruclips.net/video/L8MIQrLXsUE/видео.html
When Michael mentioned the Brighton Speed Trail, I remembered the trials held locally to me, at Weston Super Mare. Long ago ended now, a few were compaired by the actor/singer/boxer/race car driver Norman Wisdom. They were the highlight of N Somerset in my eyes. James you must have Mike on your podcast again, such a good chap and what memories. Absolutely loved how everyone he dealt with were good chaps! And nice to have someone older than me albeit only by a year or two...
When I was a teenager I loved collecting car brochures for cars I liked and admired and was impressed with how most companies were compliant and helpfull, even Bentley and Aston Martin were happy to provide despite me blatantly being too young to buy or even have the money. Something I will never forget...... When I tried Bristol Motor Cars they tried to qualify the enquiry speaking with my father, thinking he was the origin of the request. In the end once they realised it was just me, they ended up only sending me a one page leaflet. Years later when I was finally able to afford to buy and invest in such cars, I remembered how I was treated when a young poor enthusiast. Low and behold Bristol has gone bust and has never been in my radar since that early enquiry. Yet Aston Martin and Bentley have had my custom for years.
I did this too, under the pretence of doing a school project on cars. First issue of Top Gear magazine 1993 had a manufacturer's directory at the back with the freefone numbers. I called each and every one, I think everyone sent me something including AC, Lotus, Rolls Royce and even Marcos. The ones I got no luck from were Lamborghini, Ferrari and Maserati, all managed by Maranello Consessionaires who time and time again said they'd send me something and never did. I also don't think I got anything from Porsche but by far the best was VW who delivered and embarrassing amount of literature, key rings and posters, the post man must have thought it was a joke, I still remember opening the porch door and seeing piles of brochures on the floor, plus the newly printed smell clogging up the air! And a man from BMW called up after a few days and spoke to my mum, apparently he was very concerned about what this "school project" was about and what I'd written 😂
Great stories, so many that got away! My ancestors are believed to have originated from Blackmore in Essex, there or the Blackmore Vale in Dorset. Or maybe those places were named after my ancestors!

What a time to be alive, a position to be in, and a great storyteller. I really enjoyed this new version with more stories. The British passion for combustion-engined stuff is still unmatched. Thank you very much for the perfect editing: pictures when you want them, drive-bys to contextualize the anecdotes. Epic.
