Kamil Bęben Mostly correct, while the physics engine is completely custom, many times they will use either xplane or FSX for the scenery, and nowadays P3D as it is built specifically for simulators

IMO, pilots are one of the bravest human beings. To train as a pilot is ok, but to actually fly a plane independently with hundreds of lives riding on your back is super fucking brave & terrifying. I just can't imagine the feeling of flying such a huge thing (plane) into the sky and stay afloat for hours and hours with the occasional turbulences, badass weather (flying blindly through the fog or snow), system malfunctions, etc. I haven't even mentioned those heights. Goodness!
***** Correct, it was a commercial version, same scenery as FSX but with API connect points that allows Boeing to tie in their own physics engine software that actually does all of the flying. Same concept as with Prepar 3D (fsx now owned by Lockeed Martin) which it is fully written for simulators.
This is a stupid way to look at it.. they don’t spend 30 mil because they’re bored and then cheap out on a sim. They spend 30 mil because they NEED to for pilot training, though it’d be useless to make a sim of their own as other people suggested. This is either FSX or P3D with modified flight engines/planes, that’s all. They don’t need to fix what ain’t broke.. P3D was made largely for pilot training. It took FSX and built upon it.
André Garcia just wanted to say that FSX as a whole isn’t owned by Lockheed, just the base code for it. Otherwise they would called it “Flight Simulator XI” or something along those lines, and FSX:SE (published by Dovetail, developed almost entirely by Microsoft) wouldn’t be selling.
The B747 is a dream to fly , and much more stable than a C172; as long as you plan ahead for your speed , altitude , and distance to your airfield...........and configuration ( flaps , speed brakes landing gear and autopilot modes) if you don’t .........you lose.
I always wondered why there are so many buttons and knobs in the cockpit. that's the one thing that's kept me from being a pilot, I'd probably inadvertently turn a button the wrong way by bumping it while eating a cheeseburger at 36,000 feet..
I was once extremely fortunate enough to have a try in a Cathay 747 sim when my dad was a check and training Captain. Even though it was over 10 years ago the sensations were so spot on (I had sat in the jump seat a few times on flights) and the main thing that impressed me was after take off it sits back to level despite whatever is happening in the "cockpit" so subtily that when you press the throttles forward from cruise it tilts back and makes you feel like you're actually accelerating! I remember that it stank of sweat and Dad said that was from the previous command course where they make them run problems for 8 hours or so.

It actually has nothing to do with FPS, it has to do with shutter speed and refresh rate (not to be confused with FPS), the refresh rate of standard monitors is 60hertz which is the rate at which the monitor updates from the GPU, then you have the shutter speed on the camera which on most cameras ranges from 60-120, anything higher than the refresh rate of the light source will create flickering due to a black update phase of the monitor. This can also occur with regular lights such as LEDs.

I got to work on and taxi the A320 for a week at Jetstar engineering in Newcastle for highschool work experience. I had to clean each of the front turbo fan blades that apparently cost $38,000 each, and they shatter if they're dropped. I was mighty careful to say the least.

Most of the simulators used to train pilots use programs specifically designed for the simulator, it's not something you can download or get in a box. Especially since the whole thing would need a small supercomuputer to run it. I've seen the actual hardware at my local aviation academy, the computer used to run the simulator takes up an entire room.

RichardSpeed 24 Depending on the year this was built, it is probably ran by FS2004 or FSX for the SCENERY ONLY, Microsoft had a commercial license of FSX scenery engine that Boeing and Airbus used for their simulators, of course all of the physics engines and controls were custom written, a few simulator's use XPlane as well, since the code is easier to integrate with it. What happens is that since they are mostly focused on procedures and pilot training, those older simulators kept the graphics low.

Interesting...But if i got the chance to fly in one of these simulators, i would want to try and land it myself. (PPL Holder) Ok would need to be set on the right direction etc, but then its all me...As in speed...angle of approach...flaps etc etc. Whats the point of sitting there and letting the plane land itself....
I guess it's similar to automatic transmission and self-parking cars. Convenience and lowering work load of jetlagged pilots. Not the case for airforce pilots as its completely different context/application.

The view outside is flickering proving they have not used LCD TV's of the latest generation (not even 3 years old technology version) but lousy OLD CRT technology like in the old TVs! Microsoft Flight Simulator X is MUCH better (althogh not on hydraulic feets) video quality. Here in Germany they offer an hour for EUR 399,- with a real pilot in a A380 simulator! I myself would buy all the equipment from amazon for that money (a much wiser investment), even for EUR 50,- You can get FS X Only if I would suddenly become a multi-millionaire I would think about spending the nearly 400 Euros for 60 minutes.

yeah that's 'sort-of' right, it's actually not the FPS, it's the 'refresh rate' but the idea is pretty much the same. same reason why in some videos the prop looks like horizontal lines

Haha well you'd hope not. The flight simulators used by airlines are manufactured and set to have high levels of fidelity and strong emphasis goes into minimizing lag and delay time. Therefore, there a preference for low graphic quality and higher performance; as opposed to high graphic quality with some lag. Obviously as technology improves, high graphic realism is achievable without an increase in lag and decrease in fidelity.

These Sims do not belong to Aircraft OEM; with exception to the first one in the video, all are mfg by CAE in Montreal, Canada. The 747 one is quite old (15-20 yrs) however the A380 device is ~5 years old. They have a life span of ~20-25 years and depending on all options, go for ~15M...I know, I work for the manufacturer...

That's quite an assumption the first line of this movie. I've never in my 46 years of living sat in either a 747 or an A 380. I made 2 long haul flights in my life and one in a Lockheed Tristar L-1011 and one in a DC-10. The rest a only flew short haul within Europe.

I think he means that anyone who regularly flies has likely been on a trans-Atlantic or trans-Pacific flight. I doubt it's really true, though. But on the other hand, it's very common to meet someone who's at least been to Europe once.
We have just heard a plane could land itself on autopilot, so why have pilots...for the human error..? Every plane disaster is human error, so scrap the human and just do Technical failures, this way 20-30 thousand pple get blamed instead of 1.

The difference is QF want to CHARGE their pilots to use a sim. CX, BA etc don't. They realise that good pilots = safe airline. Go somewhere else Alan Joyce - Qantas is Australian, your not!
nope... aileron rolled the Boeing 777 sim just after I fly it under the sydney harbour bridge. Unfortunately the jacks don't go more than a few inches from each wall. Not a design spec for any real sim. But I have seen development of one that's for fighter jets that sits on the end of a giant arm... looks cool but not realistic. True fast jet sims can't sustain G's so they consider not to bother with it.

but that landing seemed not so realistic... as I saw, the planes generally land with the flaps down and the nose upwards, but in this case it landed with the nose looking down

Ive flown over 50 times on commercial airlines and the models include 767 767 and a320 and ive never flown on a 747 infact 767 is the biggets plane ive been in :( I SUCK
The sim was most likely "off motion" (therefore no motion cues) due to the camera crew not being secured in back. A legal requirement due to risk of injury. A level D simulator like this one must have touch down motion cue and runway rolling cues, again another legal requirement.

Its caused by the second camera Filming another screen, Due to the Framrates and lenses it causes a flicker, They avoid this in films due to how they have there kit set up The flicker can not be seen with your own eyes. only by other cameras

0:01 is completely wrong. just because you've flown on a plane, doesn't mean you've necessarily flown in a 747 or a380 considering they both do long haul routes which for some people are quite expensive....

IMO, pilots are one of the bravest human beings. To train as a pilot is ok, but to actually fly a plane independently with hundreds of lives riding on your back is super fucking brave & terrifying. I just can't imagine the feeling of flying such a huge thing (plane) into the sky and stay afloat for hours and hours with the occasional turbulences, badass weather (flying blindly through the fog or snow), system malfunctions, etc. I haven't even mentioned those heights. Goodness!

***** Correct, it was a commercial version, same scenery as FSX but with API connect points that allows Boeing to tie in their own physics engine software that actually does all of the flying. Same concept as with Prepar 3D (fsx now owned by Lockeed Martin) which it is fully written for simulators.
This is a stupid way to look at it.. they don’t spend 30 mil because they’re bored and then cheap out on a sim. They spend 30 mil because they NEED to for pilot training, though it’d be useless to make a sim of their own as other people suggested. This is either FSX or P3D with modified flight engines/planes, that’s all. They don’t need to fix what ain’t broke.. P3D was made largely for pilot training. It took FSX and built upon it.
André Garcia just wanted to say that FSX as a whole isn’t owned by Lockheed, just the base code for it. Otherwise they would called it “Flight Simulator XI” or something along those lines, and FSX:SE (published by Dovetail, developed almost entirely by Microsoft) wouldn’t be selling.
The B747 is a dream to fly , and much more stable than a C172; as long as you plan ahead for your speed , altitude , and distance to your airfield...........and configuration ( flaps , speed brakes landing gear and autopilot modes) if you don’t .........you lose.
I always wondered why there are so many buttons and knobs in the cockpit. that's the one thing that's kept me from being a pilot, I'd probably inadvertently turn a button the wrong way by bumping it while eating a cheeseburger at 36,000 feet..

I was once extremely fortunate enough to have a try in a Cathay 747 sim when my dad was a check and training Captain. Even though it was over 10 years ago the sensations were so spot on (I had sat in the jump seat a few times on flights) and the main thing that impressed me was after take off it sits back to level despite whatever is happening in the "cockpit" so subtily that when you press the throttles forward from cruise it tilts back and makes you feel like you're actually accelerating! I remember that it stank of sweat and Dad said that was from the previous command course where they make them run problems for 8 hours or so.
I’ve been on a 777, 747, 737, A330, A321, A320, A319, A380, and hopefully will have a chance to fly a Dreamliner soon.

It actually has nothing to do with FPS, it has to do with shutter speed and refresh rate (not to be confused with FPS), the refresh rate of standard monitors is 60hertz which is the rate at which the monitor updates from the GPU, then you have the shutter speed on the camera which on most cameras ranges from 60-120, anything higher than the refresh rate of the light source will create flickering due to a black update phase of the monitor. This can also occur with regular lights such as LEDs.

I got to work on and taxi the A320 for a week at Jetstar engineering in Newcastle for highschool work experience. I had to clean each of the front turbo fan blades that apparently cost $38,000 each, and they shatter if they're dropped. I was mighty careful to say the least.

Most of the simulators used to train pilots use programs specifically designed for the simulator, it's not something you can download or get in a box. Especially since the whole thing would need a small supercomuputer to run it. I've seen the actual hardware at my local aviation academy, the computer used to run the simulator takes up an entire room.
not everyone that flys has flown an a380 or 747. allot of airlines fly 777's or A340 also not everyone is fortunate enough to fly international.

fsx, rex and a few add on payware doesn't come with a cockpit that moves around on hydraulics. The software they are using probably cost $50 max.
Yeah, but that's on screen. They used mirrors and stuff to make it look super real. Like if you were to move your head, the scenery would move with you. It's crazy. I really want to try it out myself someday.

RichardSpeed 24 Depending on the year this was built, it is probably ran by FS2004 or FSX for the SCENERY ONLY, Microsoft had a commercial license of FSX scenery engine that Boeing and Airbus used for their simulators, of course all of the physics engines and controls were custom written, a few simulator's use XPlane as well, since the code is easier to integrate with it. What happens is that since they are mostly focused on procedures and pilot training, those older simulators kept the graphics low.

The view outside is flickering proving they have not used LCD TV's of the latest generation (not even 3 years old technology version) but lousy OLD CRT technology like in the old TVs!
Microsoft Flight Simulator X is MUCH better (althogh not on hydraulic feets) video quality.
Here in Germany they offer an hour for EUR 399,- with a real pilot in a A380 simulator! I myself would buy all the equipment from amazon for that money (a much wiser investment), even for EUR 50,- You can get FS X Only if I would suddenly become a multi-millionaire I would think about spending the nearly 400 Euros for 60 minutes.
I also want to fly one!! it would be soooo much fun!!

yeah that's 'sort-of' right, it's actually not the FPS, it's the 'refresh rate' but the idea is pretty much the same. same reason why in some videos the prop looks like horizontal lines

Haha well you'd hope not. The flight simulators used by airlines are manufactured and set to have high levels of fidelity and strong emphasis goes into minimizing lag and delay time. Therefore, there a preference for low graphic quality and higher performance; as opposed to high graphic quality with some lag. Obviously as technology improves, high graphic realism is achievable without an increase in lag and decrease in fidelity.

These Sims do not belong to Aircraft OEM; with exception to the first one in the video, all are mfg by CAE in Montreal, Canada. The 747 one is quite old (15-20 yrs) however the A380 device is ~5 years old. They have a life span of ~20-25 years and depending on all options, go for ~15M...I know, I work for the manufacturer...

That's quite an assumption the first line of this movie. I've never in my 46 years of living sat in either a 747 or an A 380. I made 2 long haul flights in my life and one in a Lockheed Tristar L-1011 and one in a DC-10. The rest a only flew short haul within Europe.

I think he means that anyone who regularly flies has likely been on a trans-Atlantic or trans-Pacific flight. I doubt it's really true, though. But on the other hand, it's very common to meet someone who's at least been to Europe once.
We have just heard a plane could land itself on autopilot, so why have pilots...for the human error..?
Every plane disaster is human error, so scrap the human and just do Technical failures, this way 20-30 thousand pple get blamed instead of 1.
He could, its just about 400$ for one hour of flying, but hi is a businessman xD and moreover there is just two exiting parts of flying, takeoff and landing. So finally in this case 22 hours of boring experience ;)

@210482fmj It's the best. You get used to it. I can definitely handle fatigue. Some better than others. At the end of the day, it's the best job in the world. And personally the only job for me ;)
The difference is QF want to CHARGE their pilots to use a sim. CX, BA etc don't. They realise that good pilots = safe airline.

nope... aileron rolled the Boeing 777 sim just after I fly it under the sydney harbour bridge. Unfortunately the jacks don't go more than a few inches from each wall. Not a design spec for any real sim. But I have seen development of one that's for fighter jets that sits on the end of a giant arm... looks cool but not realistic. True fast jet sims can't sustain G's so they consider not to bother with it.
Mate U can buy a decent REAL passenger jet for far less then 30 million.that cost cannot be justified at all
one thing..not everypassenger who flys goes on a 747 or a380...like come on get real ppl. theres more then just those planes in the world. and ive been in a dash 8 sim.pretty sweet too
but that landing seemed not so realistic... as I saw, the planes generally land with the flaps down and the nose upwards, but in this case it landed with the nose looking down

Yes, A Pilot License. A Pilot License Is Also Needed For A Flying Car. A Amphibious Car With Flying Capabilities Needs Sailing, Driving And A Pilot License(Icon A5).
Ive flown over 50 times on commercial airlines and the models include 767 767 and a320 and ive never flown on a 747 infact 767 is the biggets plane ive been in :( I SUCK
The sim was most likely "off motion" (therefore no motion cues) due to the camera crew not being secured in back. A legal requirement due to risk of injury. A level D simulator like this one must have touch down motion cue and runway rolling cues, again another legal requirement.
Wish it was me in there. I'd be telling the instructor to just talk, I WANT TO WORK THE CONTROLS.

@pilotanthony i never flew in a 747 or a380 :(( only 737-300/400/500 series, A320's one B777 or A330 ( but i cannot remember cuz i was so young) and A321's
Its caused by the second camera Filming another screen, Due to the Framrates and lenses it causes a flicker, They avoid this in films due to how they have there kit set up The flicker can not be seen with your own eyes. only by other cameras
I've been travelling for about 5 years and never been on an A380 or a 747. But then again, I only go from the UK to Portugal, Greece or Germany. XD
Wish I owned one so I can fly up 30k ft high, randomly press buttons and shit and switching off the engine without any risk of dying or any negative impacts, with full realism of what would happen to the plane.
0:01 is completely wrong. just because you've flown on a plane, doesn't mean you've necessarily flown in a 747 or a380 considering they both do long haul routes which for some people are quite expensive....
@AusBusinessTraveller its actually because this models are good in long range,just to add b777 is good for long haul too.althought the 747 wil have a stopover to refuel if its going long range unlike the A380
