I don't think Harmony is ridiculing the people in his film. I actually think he is ridiculing the stuffy audience. This film really is an enigma and one that has stuck with me for years. I tend to go back and forward on it. Was he making fun of hillbilly trash? Or was he genuinely presenting them objectively and letting the audience decide for themselves? But there is one thing I did dig from it. In its own bizarre way, it is a perfect reflection of the human condition. In the sense that we're all just here killing time. And while killing time waiting for the inevitable, humanity can be both beautiful and extremely ugly at the same time. Gummo presents its own world filled with its own inhabitants. Some beautiful, some ugly, but all incredibly human. But there is one thing that is for certain, I do think he is making fun of the stuffy people in the audience who want to thumb their nose at these characters. It's a strange, wonderful slice of bizarre cinema that I still love to this day.

so this film is about nothing, it doesn't go anywhere, does it? exactly. it has so many scenes that i will remember for ever. a breath of fresh air at least. Personally ı had enough of films that go somewhere.

The most remarkable thing about Gummo was that Korine never judged his subjects. They were all uneducated and poor but they were equal members of society in his eyes.
