    I began thinking that perhaps you can get an old birdhouse where the lid lifts up and close the bird hole and drill little holes around the sides and put a bowl inside with the sweet borax solution. You could lift the lid to replace fresh borax and in case of rain it would not rinse away........perhaps you would need 3-4 in your garden, but you can paint lady bugs, leaves on the birdhouse and it would be decorative and useful.......just an idea.

    I use borax & sugar. I mix 1 up in a dry 16 oz water bottle put the lid back on it, then make a hole where they can crawl in & out but where the rain water will not get in. Then I make another water bottle with a tiny bit of water added to it making it like a thick syrupy substance. I cut the holes in the bottle close to the cap on the rounded part of the top of the bottle. then I lay it down at a tiny bit of an angle almost parallel with the ground but the top of the bottle raised a bit, the hole I cut is facing towards the ground basically so the rain doesn't get in so you don't have to refill as often. I have learned to put some bricks around it or even some rocks inside of the bottles to keep the wind from moving them. I've been using this method for about 3 years. It works. Obviously not as fast as anyone would want it to. Hopefully I explained it properly. This method keeps you from having to put more bait out as often. Also I usually cover the bottles up with leaves, mulch or cardboard kind of like you did. For the comfort of the ant.

    Rather than putting the borax/sugar mix in the open and then covering it, I suggest you put it in a small plastic container with holes in it at the base. Containers like yogurt comes in or those cheap food storage containers work fine. Other ideas are peanut butter jars, etc., work too. Even small glass canning jars with holes punched in the top and laid sideways on the ground work great. No need for covers and rain and wind don't affect those containers although yo may want to place a rock on plastic containers. Also, this keeps excess borax out of the soil - something you seemed to be concerned about.

    I had a big ant problem in my basement. I found a "Recipe" for Borax and sugar, it called for water to make a paste. I tried that, not sure if it helped. I had sprayed bug stuff on the perimeter outside and inside, and then used the borax paste. It took a good month to get rid of them. I also bought the tape stuff that they stick to and ant traps. The tape stuff was filled every day. I did notice them moving slowly and found massive amounts dead in front of the washer. The last thing I used was Amdros around the outside where I thought they may have a nest. There were no tell-tale signs of a nest. This was during the Cicada invasion that also brought holes(larger than ant) in the yard. Thanks for sharing this, I will try the borax sugar mix dry in the future.

    Beets are supposed to need boron, so adding a little borax is something they should like.
    I don't know anything about fire ants (actually thought they were a Southern thing) , but I know the ant hills that you mow through with haying equipment are extremely fluffy and loose. Might be that the ants can kill plants by constant churning the soil and not letting things grow that way.

    I wish you luck, we have had ants that totally walk on by past borax and honey ignoring it completely. They seem to prefer pine needles more than anything else. So I just get my can of Raid, agitate the nest and then spray the crap out of them. In the end we just displace them and they move to somewheres else in the yard. We had a huge carpenter ant problem at one point thanks to the previous home owner using old railway ties everywhere. But we got rid of them and the remaining ones where burnt or killed with chemical after we dug up the wood. We would also wait until they came out in late spring with those that had wings and where ready to fly off then we obliterated them. Still seems like a never ending battle though.

    • @maritimegardening4887

      I really have no interest in pouring acetic acid all over my garden soil. A tablespoon of borax will not pollute anything; it's made of sulfur hydrogen, oxygen and boron. Boron and oxygen occur naturally in soil and are essential for plant growth. Also, since only the borax that the ants take into their nest gets into the soil, it's a tiny fraction of the tablespoon that actually gets in the soil.

Without knowing the longterm consequences of our actions, we are treading on dangerous ground, especially as it seems we are now on the way to the 6th mass extinction of species on our planet.

      @@asbjorgvanderveer5050 You preaching to the wrong crowd. None of us are flying around spraying insect killer over our neighborhoods. But if an ant bed pops up in the middle of my garden, it needs to go. Same if a mouse comes into my house. I'm happy to throw spiders out the window when I find them in the house, but sometimes the reasonable alternative is targeted elimination. And if you've ever experienced fire ants, there is little alternative to extermination. They are an invasive species that actively exterminates their competition, such as other ants, and their behavior is incompatible with human activities. When I was growing up in Houston, we had plenty of the "normal" ants in our yards, and we just ignored them and let ants be ants. When the fire ants migrated up from Central America in the 70's, they rapidly displaced the native species, and we only had fire ants. They are extremely aggressive and can cause serious harm to people and animals. I understand your point, but there is room for a middle ground between "don't breathe because you're depriving other animals of oxygen" and "kill all pests".

    Hey Greg, I am wondering if you can advise me. I foolishly put the wrong proportion of soap and water on cucumber plants and I think I damaged my cucumbers to the point of death. Is there anything I can do to save them?

      Just soak everything with water and hopefully that dilutes everything and they recover - that's my best guess of what to do sorry

    So I am confused I see all these reviews that this solution works great, I tried this put it down 4 days ago and still have ants, they walk all over the mixture but are still coming and going they are the small black ants. I am in Arizona City, Az.

    • @maritimegardening4887
      @maritimegardening4887  Год назад +1

      I have to do a follow-up video - some ants don't like sugar and you need to mix the borax with peanut butter or bacon fat. Also - it takes time - 4 days is a bit soon to expect results.

      @@maritimegardening4887 Thanks for responding back, I'll give this solution more time to work maybe 5 more days, if not I'll try the bacon grease god knows I have plenty of bacon grease... lol, Thanks again.

      @@maritimegardening4887 Hate to bother you but thought I would give an up date, Sugar and borax has now been down for 14 days with no effect. when you mentioned bacon grease and borax, I whipped up a batch and put that out that was 9 days ago, I also made up the peanut butter and borax at the same time. None of these haved worked, it just might be the breed of ants that we have here in Arizon City, Az. If these little suckers had not bitten up my ankles 2 weeks ago I might not be so persistent on getting rid of them. But thanks for your suggestions and time,

      Just an update no need to respond know your busy: So now day 16 and there is reduced activity, no more lines of 60 plus feet long of ants going and coming to the hole of the nest, just ants about 1 foot dia. around the hole and I noticed that they are more active in the borax and sugar. I heard somewhere that a ant colony could contain up to 1 billion ants, maybe that's what I have here. Thanks for your time and video.

    @auntiejane46 11 месяцев назад

    I’ll try this but I have fire ants. You would not stir with your finger! Very aggressive and sting like a bee. Nonnative and very destructive to native birds and small animals. I hope this can work because they are even in my house.

      @@maritimegardening4887 I think we can do both.......if I have a big colony, and have hot grease to pour out, I heat the grease and go disturb the nest and fry them......It works good for the time being. Also if I don't have hot grease, I get any spray paint and go disturb the nest and spray them good, then still do the traps/borax
