The 1990 first team sqaud was arguably stronger but that team was probably the best squad we've ever asembled, we had options everywhere. Roy Keane genuinely world class and at the peak of his powers. Robbie, Shay, the honey monster and Duffer all coming of age. Holland and Kinsellla both more than useful partners in midfield for Keane. Kilbane to compete with Duff on the left. Kelly/Carr/Harte/Staunton all good options at fullback. O''Brien/Breen/Cunningham along with Dunne at center back. McAteer/Reid both good on the right. Connolly/Doherty/Quinn/Morrison up top with Robbie. Jesus Doherty could even play center back as well if I remember correctly and I'm probably forgetting some others that were in and around the squad. Halcyon days, hope someday we have that depth again.
It’s interesting that seeds of explosion that would take place in Saipan 2002 - were sown in the aftermath of the first game. Keane was furious that management team and so many players were content with a 2-2 draw having lead 2-0.
Many teams would have been content witha draw away to the Dutch. That team were full of stars, Keane knew that. Keane held grudges and has a nasty side to him.
In the first half-time, Ireland did nearly nothing against Iran. No creativity. Just long balls from left, right center and far away. Iran could have com out of this match with a one point easily. But I don't blame Iran for losing against Ireland. They got four points against Saudi arabia and that would be enough but how in the world they misses three wins against Bahrain (two matches in Tehran and Maname), and one 0-0 agaisnt Thailand. They misses 3 matches out of 8, letting Saudi arabia collect more points and leading the group. Damn! This Team Melli was one of the best since 1998. The squad was crazy good: Ali Daei, Ali Karimi, Mahdavikia, Rezaei, Gol Mohammadi, Nikbakht were all at their pick of their career in 2002.

The first Holland match always sickens me to think about. We played 'em off the park for the first 60 minutes and didn't close out the win.
It annoyed me at the time but imagine how angry the Dutch must have been later to lose 1-0 to Ireland with an extra man.
