- An immensely entertaining WC qualifier with France and Ireland battling it out. Keane locks horns with a familiar face in Zinedine Zidane and the likes of Vieira, Wiltord and Henry.
Keane naturally wasn't fazed by the occassion and despite facing a stacked midfield of Makelele, Vieira & Zidane, and playing in an industrious yet primarily attacking midfield of A.Reid, D. Duff & K. Kilbane, Keane was one of the standout performers in the game.
Republic of Ireland - S. Given, S. Carr, R. Dunne, K. Cunningham, J. O'Shea, R. Keane, K. Kilbane, D. Duff, A. Reid, C. Morrison, R. Keane
Manager - Brian Kerr
France - Grégory Coupet, Jean-Alain Boumsong, William Gallas, Lilian Thuram, Willy Sagnol, Claude Makélélé, Patrick Vieira, Vikash Dhorasoo, Zinédine Zidane, Sylvain Wiltord, Thierry Henry
Manager - Raymond Domenech

Keane had an ability that dumb football enthusiasts could not fully appreciate. He was a very technical footballer who had so much time on the ball, a true sign of a great player. His ability to anticipate where the play would develop, spot a wayward pass and coerce a team into making a mistake was truly world class. It's why United dominated possession statistics (particularly when Paul Scholes couldn't tackle to save his life). It's also the reason why United won so much, you can't really lose if the other team can't get the ball. His passing was impeccable. He would play the simplest of passes that were exactly what was needed to develop the next attack. That's skill, make no mistake about it.
Perfect. Couldn't have said it any better. He could read the game like no other. He was always two steps ahead that cannot be taught. He was absolutely world class, you got to play the game to truly appreciate its beauty.
And hes so underrated because he got a red card every once in a while
@@Shnsuxnduxnjdndx The fuck? Keane was never underrated. Stop using that word and disrespecting Keane. He is Ireland's best ever player and United's most successful captain, and you call him UNDERRATED?
Kids nowadays.
Damn Keane was way past his prime
Scary he was still the best on the pitch .
You can see he knows it's going to have to be him to stop Henry, Zidane & Wiltord each time they break, next level aggression & determination
Exactly ...he knows where they have to be stopped in their tracks. If this is not a lesson in how to anchor midfield
What sets Keane apart is that he did the simple things REALLY well. His tackling and passing is unmatched really.
Yup - bang on. I love that they included a clip of him taking a throw in too, just to prove he could nail them as well 😅
You did see that his tackle on henry failed and that he got a yellow for elbowing him right…unmatched my ass.
His tackling nor passing was unmatched. But it was really good. As was his positioning, dribbling, goalscoring ability for a CM, etc etc. He was unexceptional in every way apart from two things: consistency and leadership.

Keane can deal with anyone, because his timing, read the game, stamina, mentality are great. He is one of the best defensive-offensife midfielder
Forgot how good Roy Keane was. He should of getting more credit. What a fantastic player
how could you forget
Wasn't English that's why
Only thing he's not getting credit for is the countless dumbasses calling him a 'DM' and saying he's underrated.
Not a bad Irish team at all. Vast majority were in the Premier League. Now we've 2 Premier League starters.
We used to have players at big clubs. Not anymore though
Ireland allways the underdogs with how small a country you are bro. Tough team tho allways have been
Two Keanes, what a team
Might be that the amount of international options available nowadays, the standard is so high because the best plays from each nation are cherry picked for the prem teams now.
Dont worry with Ireland doing the same as England now and picking up half of Africa you'll have a bigger pool a fked up country but a bigger pool non the less
Imagine Keane and zidane in the same midfield, scary stuff
It almost happened. Blackburn tried to sign both of them.
There have been faster, more skillful and prolific goalscoring midfielders But boy Roy certainly had the basics down to a fine art. Passing, control, tackling, timing, great reading of the game and second to none in terms of commitment, passion and motivating his teammates to play better. What a captain and leader. Being a Cork man too doesn't hurt.
What do you mean by skillfull? His ability to read were the play would develop, anticipating a wayward pass was world class. That is Skill, he had bags of it. Stupid people think a bunch of mindless step overs that lead to nothing is what encapsulates skill. Keane had ability that dumb football enthusiast could not fully appreciate. He was very technical and had so much time on the ball a sign of a truly great player. That's skill, make no mistake about it.
@@michaelunderhill8847 Keane Zidane who is better than them now
And he could score as well. Remembering those box to box play of his. Just like Paul Scholes on their heyday.
True Fighter, warrior, commander in chief. Always want to win the ball back at all cost. Passing is simple and accurate. His forward dribbling is also way more effective than most modern overpaid man united players. Every teammate dreams. A one of a kind. Absolute LEGEND.
most underrated world class player ever
Keane always had an outstanding read of the game - always alert and aware. Add a fair bit of composure and bravery, and you have a player who will have an influence in every game.
"A fair bit"
trolol 😅
Keane is certainly the most influential player of his generation. No-one could match his work ethic or leadership on and off the pitch. As a player he was also an absolute monster who was comfortable in his early days being a box to box goal scoring midfielder and equally at home later in his career as a more defensive player. He even played centre half in the CL and didn't the opposition forward a sniff. He was always a few seconds ahead!!!
Keane was way past it here & still the most important player on the pitch. Under appreciated for sure
It’s Ireland. Everyone was just more shit so of course he was more important than the rest.
@@fuckyoutube1999 Zidane, Henry, Sagnol, Thuram, Makelele, Wiltord, Vieira, Malouda, Dhorasoo, Robbie Keane, Duff all played in this match. I wouldn’t say any of them were shit, I reckon the majority would say they were the complete opposite 🤦🏻♂️😂😂

7:38 “pa pa pa pa pa, pa pa pa pa! Roy Keane!”
We took it for granted that was a great era in the premiere league especially for a United supporter, only English premier league team captain ever to win the triple . And what a Captain he was .
What a player Roy Keane was. After the United split he was heavily linked with Everton. Was absolutely gutted when he ended up at Celtic. Would have been an icon for us at that time and could have been the difference in some massive games for us
Roy Keane: Its the simple things. Control, calm, simple through balls, pass.
Keane still the best midfielder in premier league history
As arsenal supporter, Roy Keane was my childhood villain. But wow what a player. Nearly spotless with his passing, selfless, determined, excellent reader of play. Nothing spectacular (although he was capable of it), but always the right action. Sorry, but congratulations fellow gooners, Declan Rice is a Roy Keane regen!!
He was everywhere!
He’s so good at just nicking the ball then doing a simple pass forward even when he’s under pressure
Keane was functioning better when under pressure
@@mskidiKeane is the word "pressure" personified.
Very composed and unreal at breaking up play!! Bursting a lung to make recoveries and no problem leaving his mark on someone to stamp his authority on the match!! Some of his sliding challenges are top class
greatest cdm in history.
One of if not the greatest United midfielder ever, nothing fancy just does the job
Ya he really was brilliant although I feel he was a lot more technical then people give him credit for I feel. His passing and use of both feet were top class.
Greatest captain of united
Been a United fan from cork it’s hard for me to disagree but Bryan Robson edges it for me by a whisker! Old enough to have watched both all through their United careers. Both in their prime at the same time would’ve been special!
Keane in possession of the ball second to none, off the ball second to none
anything was possible when Roy was on the pitch. For a small country of 5 million, Roy kept us competitive against teams with 10x 20x the talent pool. We were lucky to see this era of football, itll never be the same, nature of the game has changed from sport to business. sad really. thanks for the memories Roy!
Absolute class, the reading of the play is beautiful.
That Ireland team was all about Keane... The abbreviation 'ROI', enough said...
Lol never noticed that before and roi means king in French
Keane was levels above his international teammates here even at this age only the greats have that.
Keane wat a legend 👏
Wow, this was such a physical and aggressive match compared to some international games today.
Exactly, young adults don't understand why we complain about players being too friendly on the pitch. There is a sort of 100% fighting mentality that you just don't see often nowadays, specially in the biggest teams.
I have a feeling that was one of the reasons Leicester won a couple of years ago over Man C, United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, all huger budget teams.
And I also have a feeling that's the reason Mourinho hasn't been successful, every single manager that followed on his previous sackings has had the exact same problems with the same players. Look at midfielders at Tottenham, Winks still the main man, look at United, how much has Pogba been used after him? This is not to say it's his job to manage all that.
All boils down to one thing, consistent fighting mentality.
Remember the whole focus is on a certain R. Keane! Might skew perceptions a tad...
Had Keane been born some 1000 years ago, he'd be some kind of mythological being in Celtic/Viking legends. That man is the epitome of the warrior spirit. Never give up, never surrender, never show any sign of weakness. Nothing else than victory is acceptable.
It's one thing kicking a ball and acting violent in a sport where violence isn't allowed, another thing fighting against people who fight back.
@@ronniep9272 He only sits in a chair and talks football he is not God
Rooney has said Keane was the best passer of the ball he's seen, all class of 92 say he was best player they played with as did nearly all other players including Stam. He's the reason mainly why Manchester United won so much
The old war dog still had a nasty bite even if he wasn't as mobile at this point. Still a very good player even if he was diminished a bit by his hip and knee issues.

Some performance from an aging Keane.Even at that late stage of his career the bigger the game the more Keane stood out.Just look at that midfield he was up against.7 years earlier he was up against Zidane,David's ect.. and got United to the Champions league final.Best and most important player for Ireland and United from 93-03 at United and from 93-06 for Ireland.Prime Keane was the perfect all round midfielder that never been bettered in premiership history. If only he was English.
Good points, indeed but I think Paul McGrath from the late 80(88 Euro's and 1990&1994 World Cup's) demonstrated. What a Gem he was to Man U briefly,Aston Villa and Ireland!..But In this particular game Keane was phenomenal!
In Roy Keane and Paul McGrath us Irish and Manchester United were utterly spoilt to have two of the best players that the Premier league ever had
Wouldn't put McGrath on the same level but he was a good player
Roy Keane Legend 👏❤️👍
It's his job.
And he's one of the best ever at it.
Keane: I'll tackle anyone and anywhere
French team: who will tackle Keane
😆
Keane could play this good with Ireland. So you know hes a top player
One of the best performances ever
Living legend without a doubt one of the best ever
KEANE BEST DEFENDER IN THE WORLD ON THIS SHOWING.
One of the all time proactionary defenders in the midfield. When he had his legs under him, Keane would break most offensive plays without even marking up close. Fast, deliberately furious, with an instinctive understanding of offensive movement, he would herd attackers where they didnt want to be. And of course, his offensive contributions were not incosiderable themselves, on top his game, and that always came on the biggest stage, Keane was the single most important clog in ManUs offense.
Respect Keane
What a team Ireland had then.. You can see Roy knows who the danger people are and he is cancelling them out .. Andy Reid Kevin Kilbane Roy Keane O'shay and summariser Nial Quinn all played for my team Sunderland during our IRISH DAYS
Put Keane in any team and see how the team finds its balance and fluidity on its own.

Wouldn't be Roy's first time to dominate zidane or viera but to play that well against both at the same time he deserves a statue in old Trafford the Aviva stadium and outside sky sports
Haha what a delusional and ubsurd statement, Roy Keane can't carry Zidane's socks, in fact all of great Britain's player's combined wouldn't lace Zizou's shoes 🤣 🤷♂️🤗
@@zakmukhtar8672 Harsh. For me, Zidane is one of the greatest players ever, but Keane dominated him in the Stadio delle Alpi in 1999. He also played quite well in this game, so it's nonsense to say he couldn't compete with Zizou.

It was a meat grinder
More interesting and technically much more advanced than many pl games. I watched full video and was on edge, yes it’s probably best parts but it covered full 93 minutes and intensity didn’t calm down

That French team got to the World Cup final
Immense
That's his job. And he does it well.
That's why Utd got him. Fergie wanted a lad who cud go box to box , tackle and pass it 10 yards. Done. And the value of him popping in 14-15 goals a season too.
Miss the old landsdowne road.
That Irish team look strong
Lol I never knew Keane and Vieira faced each other in international football.
You don't get players like him anymore. He'd be sent off within the first 15 minutes in the modern game. It may be a fair criticism to say today's defense's lack passion, but its more about discipline and technical ability. This kind of attitude has gone from being viewed as heroic, to dangerous and (technically) illegal. Frightening to think just how many goals Henry could score today if this is what he faced on a regular season
Watching this, you'd forget how the physicality of the game has almost completely disappeared. A few of those tackles I expected the French players to be rolling around on the ground for a couple of minutes but in fairness they just got up and got on with it. The game is much more technical now but the players spend so much time feigning injury its pathetic.
He’s just doing his job
